<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
L'invention comporte encore d'autres caractéristiques
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
En se référant à la fige 7, on constatera que dans l'ap- pareil décrit plus haut, dans lequel la réduction de diamètre de la partie antérieure desébauches est effectuée en dehors de la fi- lière d'étirage, la barre à tampon ou le mandrin peut être rempla- cé par des galets de pression 42 disposés du coté postérieur de la filière d'étirage et remplaçant le mécanisme d'oscillation, qui , sert ramener la barre à tampon ou le mandrin chargé de l t ébauche. de la position d'enfilage à la position d'alignement Ces galets de pression 42 d'un genre connu sont montés du coté postérieur de la filière d'étirage, à une petite distance de la filière d'étira- ge 1 et en alignement avec celle-ci;

@
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

EMI1.1
Relevant to the manufacture of metal tubes and the like.
The present invention, relating to the manufacture of metal tubes or the like, relates to the preparation of the anterior end of tubular blanks to be drawn.
The main object of the invention is to create improved means for achieving the reduction in the diameter of the anterior end of the tubular blanks, -reduction which extends over a short length from said end, - in order to allow the blanks to be gripped by clamping means during their introduction into a drawing die. so as to be stretched by the movement of the clamping means to form metal tubes or the like.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The reduction in the diameter of the anterior end of a tubular blank has heretofore been achieved by the process known as "push pointing".
In this process, the blanks, gripped at a certain distance from their anterior end, are introduced by pushing into the drawing die, by this end.
The above reduction in diameter is a different operation from that known as "tagging" in which the front end of the tubular blank is forged or hammered into a flattened, bent or rounded shape.
In the above-mentioned diameter reduction process, the anterior end of the blank retains its initial outer conformation, but the outer dimensions of the cross section are reduced over a short length from said end, for the purpose defined above. above,
According to the invention, the reduction in diameter (according to the above definition) is effected with the preform in place for the stretching operation.
It is preferably carried out by driving a die on the blank for a short distance from front to back from the front end of the blank.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, the shrinking die is constituted by the stretching die and it is advantageously arranged so as to be movable backwards. In this case, and with a view to placing the blank for the drawing operation, the die is then moved forward, against stop or stop members,. ') Determining the position of 'drawing.
According to a second embodiment of the invention, the reduction in diameter can be obtained without resorting to the drawing die. In this case, use is preferably made of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a die (hereinafter called a shrinkage die) whose diameter is slightly less than that of the drawing die. However, if desired, the die used can be the same as that of the draw bench. Either way, the die @ can be forcibly passed over the blank from its front end, or the front end of the blank can be pushed through the die.
In this second embodiment of the invention, the blank must be brought into alignment with the drawing die after the diameter has been reduced; then you have to bring it closer. of this die so that it occupies the position required for drawing.
Arrangements can be made to support the blank internally, so that the clamping members cannot cause the blank to be crushed, either during the diameter reduction operation or during cutting. stretching, or during these two operations.
An apparatus, in accordance with the present invention, advantageously comprises in combination an axially movable stretching die and pressurized fluid control means for moving the die back from its stretching position in which it leans against stop or stop members, and to force it on the front end of the tubular blank, so as to reduce the diameter of the latter (according to the definition above ).
The clamping means provided for gripping the blank at its front end during the operation of reducing the amount of glue, preferably comprise fixed and movable clamping jaws, in the form of a wedge. Preferably, the construction is such that during an initial retrograde movement of the compressed fluid control means, a movable clamping jaw grips the blank before the movement towards the arc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the drawing die.
In another apparatus, according to the present invention, a die, of the same caliber or slightly smaller than the drawing die and which occupies a position different from the latter, is combined with control means b6 fluid under. pressure to move the first die, so that the latter is forcibly passed over the front end of a tubular blank to reduce its diameter (as defined above); other means are provided for subsequently bringing the blank into the position required for its stretching into a tube or the like.
In this case again, the means provided for gripping the blank at its anterior end during the latter's narrowing are constituted by fixed and mobile cooperating jaws, having the shape of a wedge. A movable jaw can also be conditioned to grip the blank during an initial retrograde movement of the pressurized fluid control means, before the first die begins its backward movement.
The last-mentioned apparatus may comprise a die identical to the drawing die, provided for the reduction of the diameter. However, recourse to the aforementioned shrinking die is recommended in order to facilitate the introduction of the preform prepared into the drawing die, with a view to the stretching operation.
The invention is further characterized by a process for the manufacture of drawn metal tubes, according to which the reduction in diameter (as defined above) of the front end of a blank is carried out before mounting of the blank on a buffer bar or mandrel, occurring only during the course of the actual drawing of the blank.
The invention also has other characteristics
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which will be described below and repeated in the claims terminating the present specification.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, it will be described below in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, various forms of improved apparatus for cold drawing. of metal tubes.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an apparatus according to the present invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view of part of the apparatus of Figure 1 showing the members in the position they occupy during the operation of reducing the diameter of a tubular blank,
Figure 3 is a sectional view of another apparatus according to the present invention; Figures 4 and 5 show sections similar, respectively, to Figures 1 and 2, of another apparatus according to the present invention,
Figure 6 shows several sections designated by (a), (b), (c) and (d) of another apparatus according to the present invention.
FIG. 7 is a section similar to that of FIG. 3, of a variant of the apparatus according to the present invention.
In general, all these devices comprise a drawing die 1, mounted in a support or base 2 at the rear end of a drawing bench 3; the metal tubes are drawn from tubes 4, denoting tubular blanks and brought into alignment with the die by oscillation, transverse displacement or otherwise.
In the device according to Figures 1 and 2, the blanks @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
4 are mounted on a buffer bar or a mandrel 5, the rear end of which can oscillate around an anchoring part 6. To mount the blanks on the buffer bar or the mandrel, the latter is moved apart slightly from the axis of the stretching bench, so as to assume a position, such as 5a; when the blank is fully mounted on the mandrel, the mandrel is brought, by hand or otherwise, into alignment with the axis of the die, as indicated in 5.
If desired, there can be two mandrels, arranged so that one of them occupies the. threading position, as indicated at 5a, while the other occupies the alignment position 5, and Conversely * The base 2 comprises a housing?, in which is permanently housed a central clamping pavil- 10n 8. A die holder 9 can slide longitudinally in the housing 7. The ties 10 of the pistons 11 of a pair of cylinders 12, double-acting and pressurized fluid, are integral with the die holder 9 and extend backwards on diametrically opposed sides through appropriate passages of the clamping bell *.
The latter comprises internal faces, inclined towards the front, between which there are two clamping half-jaws 13, which comprise inclined faces cooperating with those of said jaws. The active faces of the clamping jaws are slightly ridged or rough; they are adjacent to the cylindrical tubular blank and to a cap suitable for gripping the blank in the vicinity of its anterior end. The two cylinders-12 can also slide in the housing 7; their anterior end is provided with extensions or bxas 14, resting on the posterior part of the clamping jaws 13. Two coil springs 15 are provided around the rods 10 of the pistons 11 of the cylinders 12, between the die holder 9 and the jaw horn 8.
The rear ends of the springs 15 are accommodated advantageously.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ment in cylindrical notches of the roof 8. As shown in FIG. 1, an inclined plane 17 is provided on one side of the housing 7 and extends in the direction of the place of threading C, or the blanks are loaded onto the buffer bar or mandrel, brought back to 5a. This inclined plane serves to guide the anterior end of each blank, when it is drawn together with the mandrel from its threading position, in alignment with the die 1, and 11 determines the position to be taken. by the anterior end of the blank before the latter is subjected to the diameter reduction operation, according to the definition above.
The device works as follows:
A blank 4 is threaded through. using a suitable threading apparatus (not shown) on the buffer bar or chuck, when the latter occupies the oblique threading position 5a, so as to -form an angle with the axis of the drawing bench 3. The mandrel and the blank are then pivoted around the anchoring part 6, so that their axis coincides with that of the filler (the drawing 1, such as 'it is indicated in figure 1.
During this movement, the anterior end of the blank meets the inclined plane 7 and is forced in this way to take the required longitudinal position with respect to the die holder, in view of the reduction in diameter to be effected, as 11 is indicated in FIG. 1. The die holder 9 then occupies its most advanced position and rests against stop or stop members in the form of shoulders 18, integral with the housing 7; this position corresponds to the stretching position of the die. When the different organs occupy these positions, the compressed fluid is admitted, under appropriate control, to the front end of the two cylinders 12.
The coil springs 15, threaded over the rods 10 of the pneumatic pistons 11, are to prevent the pistons from moving backwards for a short time interval, during which the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
cylinders 12, sliding in the housing 7, move slightly either forwards or backwards, so that the arms 14 come into contact with the clamping jaws 13 and move the latter forward, (with a view to 'lightly kiss the blank 4) (see figure 2), until they lightly grip the blank.
When the required predetermined pressure is established between the clamping jaws and the blank, the pressure developed by the compressed fluid on the front walls of the cylinders 12 exceeds the countervailing tension of the coil springs 15 and causes displacement. behind the pistons 11 inside the cylinders. The pistons drive the, ports-: Chain 9, which therefore moves backwards inside the housing 7, by forcing the die 1 to pass over the anterior end of the blank , which results in the reduction of the diameter of this end, as indicated in fig. 2.
The magnitude of the die back stroke can be determined by the die holder, meeting the jaw bell 8 or other stop or stop members. The tension of the coil springs 15 can be determined in such a way that the clamping jaws press firmly on the blank 4 before the die moves back. The blank 4 is then moved so that it occupies the position required for stretching. For this purpose, the pressurized fluid is admitted at the rear end of the cylinders 12. This will first cause the cylinders to move a small distance in the direction of retreat. because we must not forget that the cylinders have been advanced a little bit, to allow the clamping jaws to come into action.
The cylinders 12 move back until they meet the stop or stop members (not indicated), provided for this purpose and intended to loosen in this way the clamping jaws 13. When the cylinders have made their rearward stroke , the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
fluid under pressure acts on the pistons 11 and causes them to advance in the cylinders and thus the die holder 9, provided with the die 1, also advances until it is stopped at 18 in the initial position as indicated in FIG. 1. It is then possible for the die 1, during this retrograde movement, to entral- @ ne the blank without the latter moving relative to the die.
It doesn't matter whether or not that happens. In fact, when the die is brought to its stretching position, the mandrel 8 must be advanced in known manner and suitably with the aid of an apparatus 19, comprising a cylinder in which a piston moves under it. action of a compressed fluid. this advancement must be done in such a way that the head or the plug 20, intended to determine the internal diameter of the drawn tube, is at. even to cooperate with the die in the drawing operation which will follow.
When the mandrel 20 is thus advanced, the anterior face of the head or pad 20 will abut against the inner shoulder 21 (Fig. 2) formed in the blank as the diameter of the anterior end is reduced and, consequently. if this has not yet happened, the blank 4 will be advanced so that its narrowed anterior end is introduced into the die, which occupies the position required for the stretching of a placed blank. '.this. As a reminder, the positions of the blank and the die may be similar to that shown in Figure 6 (d).
It is also possible to provide, in line with the threading C of the blanks 4, a pair of pressure rollers 22, which will facilitate the threading of the blanks onto the mandrel, occupying position 5a.
However, it is preferable to use the threading means described in British Patent Application No. 361963. In fact, the invention can be combined in several respects with the method forming the object. of British patent application N 361963.
The apparatus shown in figs. 4 and 5, is similar in construction to that of the apparatus shown in FIGS.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
1 and 2, but differs from the latter in the arrangement of the clamping jaws 13 which grip the blank, ready to undergo the reduction in diameter, at a greater distance from the front end.
In this case, the buffer 20 of the buffer bar or the chuck is advanced so as to be inside the blank, below the clamping jaws ,,
In other embodiments of apparatuses according to the invention, the reduction of the diantre of the previous extract of tubular blanks (unlike the method adopted for the embodiments according to Figures 1, 2 , 4 and 5, in which it is carried out when the axis of the blank coincides with that of the drawing die), is carried out without the blank being aligned with the drawing die and before the the blank is threaded onto the mandrel.
A separate means is employed for the stated purpose, and occupies a suitable position which may be independent of the draw bench. Therefore, depending on the embodiment of the apparatus, shown in figure 3, the construction is as than the reduction in diameter, according to the above definition. or performed when the blanks are supported by a series of rollers 23, normally used for threading the blanks on the buffer bar or the mandrel at 5a. Only two of these rollers are shown in fig. 3, in which the apparatus of fig 1 is partially re-produced and of reduced length, so as not to exceed the dimensions of the drawing sheet.
Figure 3 includes two pressure rollers 22 similar to those of Figure 1; in these two figures, the lower roller advantageously forms part of the series of threading rollers such as 23.
When the buffer bar or the mandrim 5a occupies the position required for the threading of the blanks, it is located opposite the last of the series of threading rollers, as it is.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
indicated in figure 3. At the anterior end, which in reality must be situated more to the right than indicated in figure 3, is the said means which can be identical to each of those adjoining the base. 2 of Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5, but, as indicated, it comprises a housing 24, integral with a support or base
25, and serving as a housing for a pavilion with fixed jaws, as described above.
A shrinkage die 27 is mounted in a die holder 28, which can move back and forth between the flag 26 and stop or stop members.
29 provided at the front end of the housing 24. The axis of the latter coincides with the axis of the blank 4 supported by the rollers 23.
, the latter are controlled rollers and, according to the present invention, their control is reversible so that they can present a blank 4 to the die 27 with a view to the reduction in diameter, as defined above. , or that they can thread it on a buffer bar or mandrel 5a. The die holder
28 is extended forward so as to constitute a hollow base 30 for mounting a single pressurized fluid cylinder 31. The length of the hollow 32 of this base is such that the end of the blank can be completely inserted therein when its diameter is reduced.
.
The front end of the piston 33 of the compressed air cylinder 31 is integral with a cross member 34, the ends of which are connected to two rods 35 passing rearwardly through the die holder 28, the housing 24 and the bell to . jaws 26. The posterior ends of the rods are provided with a head or a yoke 36, which cooperates with the clamping jaws 37 housed in the horn 38. The latter and the clamping jaws are identical to those of the apparatus shown in fig 1 and coil springs 38 are threaded onto the rods 35, between the bell with clamping jaws and the die holder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
At the start of the stretching operation, the blank to be drawn 4 is fed to the rollers 23 and advanced to the shrinkage die 27, under the control of an electrical switch or other suitable device mounted in the. motor circuit controlling these rollers; sector 2? being advanced so as to meet the stop or stop members 29. Before the front end of the blank meets the shrinkage die (this position being shown in the drawing) and while it is at a predetermined distance from said die, this same end closes the circuits of an electrical device or another, such as a solenoid, controlling the control valve of the compressed fluid cylinder 31.
Therefore, the final displacement of the anterior end of the blank towards the shrinkage die 2? and its meeting therewith, cause the admission of the pressurized fluid to be triggered at the rear end of the cylinder 31, which results in the displacement of the piston 33.
This movement only constitutes an initial retrograde movement of small amplitude identical to that in question above (FIG. 1) and which is triggered by the action of the springs 33; as it eet easy to realize, it is dead that the posterior ends of the rods 35 provided with the head or yoke 36 operate behind the clamping jaws 3? and apply them strongly to the blank at a suitable distance from its anterior end.
The jaw horn is fixed at 50 so that as a result of appropriate movements of the elements 36, the clamping jaws strongly apply to the blank. -As soon as the required pressure is established between the inner surfaces of the clamping jaws 3? and the initial small displacement blank of the pistons 33 ceases. The cylinder 31, the bottom 30 of which is integral with the die holder 28, retreats, entraining the shrinking die.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
ment'27, to reduce the diameter of the front end of the blank 4. The coil springs 38, surrounding the rods 35; are compressed as the die holder 28 moves rearward.
This retrograde movement ends as soon as the die holder meets the fixed jaw horn 26 or other stopping or stop members. immediately before the end of this retrograde movement, the pressurized fluid cylinder 31 operates a second electrical or other device, mounted in the circuit of the solenoid or the like controlling the inlet valve of the pressurized fluid. The pressurized fluid is thus admitted to the front end of the cylinder 31 but only after a predetermined time interval, set for example by. a time relay mounted in the electrical or other circuit and when the rear stroke of the cylinder is completed.
The cylinder 31, the die holder 28 and the die 2? are then advanced so as to disengage the shrinkage die from the front end of the blank 4, which immediately after a small rearward movement of the piston is released, this movement being essential to eliminate the The antagonistic action of the clamping jaws 37 (or even for loosening them if necessary) as will be readily understood. The blank 4 being thus released, can be moved backwards by reversing the direction of the control mechanism of the rollers 23, which can already. to have intervened to retain the blank during the release of the die, as explained above.
The blank is then mounted on the buffer bar or mandrel 5a until the inner shoulder (analogous to the shoulder 21 of the pin 2) formed by the reduction in the diameter of the front end of the blank meets the front wall of pad 20 of pad bar or mandrel 50.
The blank and the buffer bar or mandrel are fed by. an oscillating movement, in alignment with the stretching die, as indicated in the upper part of fig 3, after @
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
whereby the buffer bar or mandrel, then occupying the position denoted by 5, is advanced so as to introduce the narrowed front end of the preform through the drawing die for the proper drawing operation said. The inner shoulder of the blank is designated by 39 in the upper part of the pin 3, and, for convenience of the explanation, the similar elements of Figures 1 and 3 are designated hereafter by the same references. .
Another form of improved apparatus is similar to that of the previous apparatus except that the shrinkage die is replaced by a die identical to the stretching die. However, the use of a shrinkage die has an advantage when the diameter reduction is effected independently of the stretching die itself, since in this case the shrinkage die being of a smaller internal diameter. that the drawing die itself causes such a reduction in the diameter of the front end of the preform that this end can be easily introduced into the drawing die itself.
for the stretching operation. Of course, the shrinkage die can be quite similar to a stretch die. The only thing to remember is that its diameter is smaller than that of the die used for the stretching of the blanks, having been treated by a shrinking die.
In other forms of apparatus improved in accordance with the present invention, the use of a buffer bar or mandrel is unnecessary so that there is no buffer, such as 20, to determine the quantity. inside diameter of the drawn tubes.
This method can be adopted in appropriate cases so that instead of stretching the tubes between a drawing die and a plug, uniform shrinkage of the diameter takes place. In devices conforming to those of rods 1, 2, 4 and 5 and of the type of
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
that shown by way of example in FIG. 6, Buffer bar or mandrel can be replaced with push bar
40 with removable head 41.
However the device can be in all similar to a. one or the other of them, represented in the figures
1 and 2 or 4 and 5, except that now the push bar can oscillate around an anchor part, as in fig. 1, and that is why the references of the rod 6 correspond to those of the figures 1 and 2 and 4 and 5 to represent similar elements. The succession of operations is indicated in FIG. 6 by the sections designated respectively by (a), (b), (c) and (d).
Section (a) shows the parts in the same position as that of similar rod parts. 1 and 4, the die 1 being in contact with the shoulders 18.,
In (b) the die 1 has been moved rearward and the reduction of the front end of the blank is carried out completely.
In (c) the die again occupies the stretching position and in (d) the shrunken end of the blank has been introduced into the die at 1a. in the manner of a push bar 40 with a head 41, so as to occupy the position required for the stretching of the tube. When the blank is not stretched by passing over a head or pad of a pad bar or mandrel, but is forced through the drawing die to effect uniform diameter shrinkage, as is required. indicated above, the buffer bar, which is advantageously connected to the piston of a thrust cylinder, such as 19, freezes 1,
has 'no other role than to introduce again the end' anterior retreat of the blank into the die by bringing its head 41 into contact with the shoulder 21 of the blank. The push bar obviously does not play this role, when the die 1 drives the blank from the position shown in (b).
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
Referring to fig 7, it will be seen that in the apparatus described above, in which the reduction in diameter of the front part of the blanks is effected outside the drawing die, the buffer bar or the mandrel can be replaced by pressure rollers 42 arranged on the rear side of the drawing die and replacing the oscillation mechanism, which serves to return the buffer bar or mandrel loaded with the blank. from the threading position to the alignment position These pressure rollers 42 of a known type are mounted on the rear side of the drawing die, at a small distance from the drawing die 1 and in alignment with it;
they are advantageously controlled by an electric motor 43 via an appropriate speed reducer. In addition to the rollers 23, adjacent to the drawing bench and perpendicular to the latter, other rollers 23a are arranged after the rollers 23 and in alignment therewith. They extend for a distance equal to the length of a blank. Likewise, guide bars 44, for example, may be provided for the lateral supply of the blank to the pressure rollers 42; these bars are located between the gaiety series 23a and a tube receiving table (not shown) incorporating pressure rollers and the bearing surface of which contains the axis of the drawing bench 3.
Similar organs of the freezes. '1 and 3 are designated by the same references.
The push bar 40, 41 can be replaced by pressure rollers 42 and vice versa. Thus, a push bar can be substituted for the rollers 42 of FIG. 7 and in this case the narrowed front end of the blanks will be introduced into the drawing die using a pressurized fluid cylinder, acting on the rear end of the push bar. Likewise the apparatus of FIG. 3 may include pressure rollers 42, shown in phantom and then the buffer bar or the man- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
drin no longer intervenes for the introduction of the narrowed end of the blank into the die 1. Similar arrangements can be adopted for the apparatus of the rods * 1, 2, 4 and 5.
One or more of the rollers 23 or 23a may or may not cooperate with a superimposed pressure roller.
It should be noted that the present invention is applicable to the reverse operation of "pushing contraction", although it includes "pushing contraction of the anterior end of the preform when it is. performed without resorting to the drawing die. For convenience, the action of forcing die 1 or 27 on the anterior end of the tubular blank to effect diameter reduction, as defined above, may be called "narrowed (sinking down) the anterior end of the blanks. The same principle is the basis of the devices described above and shown in the accompanying drawings.
Tests have shown that this Reverse process gives good results because it allows adequate control of the front end of the blank. To obtain the best result, the clamping pressure exerted by the jaws to prevent movement of the blank during the "shrinking" operation should be a radial pressure substantially equal to four times the pressure. final exerted by the shrinkage die.
Since the final pressure of the jaws is equal to the final pressure of the die, one resulting from the reaction of the other, the desired ratio of the radial pressure to the final pressure is reached at the level of the clamping, and 11 is perfectly obtained according to the invention by the use of a fixed clamping means or of a jaw bell whose inclined or wedge-shaped inner walls cooperate with the corresponding surfaces of the clamping jaws. - mobile ages. The arrangements provided for supporting the blank internally and in line with the jaws may be of a known type.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
Thus the buffer bar or the mandrel or the push bar may include a local support, the diameter of which is adapted to the internal diameter of the blank to avoid crushing at the point of duplication of the radial pressure exerted by the jaws, as indicated above. To prevent the orifice of the blank from being crushed under the action of the radial pressure of the jaws, used for stretching, it is possible to have recourse to the means described in the patent of the same date by the Applicant, entitled @Removing improvements for metal tubes and the like ".
CLAIMS
1.- A method of manufacturing stretched metal tubes or the like, characterized in that the reduction in diameter, according to the above definition, of the front end of a tubular blank is carried out before the blank is put in place for the stretching operation.
