<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
sent; la résistance à la compression est indispensable 4 la stabilité et pour permettre une exécution aisée de la construc- tion désirée;
D'autres @
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Compound material for construction work and process for its manufacture.
-------
This invention relates to the manufacture and use of an improved new composite material, and it aims to produce a material which is both light and capable of withstanding mechanical stresses and deformations so as to be suitable for use. a large number of applications in construction work.
The compound material in accordance with the invention comprises a core or a base having the characteristics set out in a patent of the same date by the Applicant for "Composition intended for use in construction work and method for its manufacture", lined on the surface on one or more. both sides of a relatively thin material such as plywood, sheet metal or their equivalent, the core or bottom acting to stabilize the surface material so that the strength qualities of the latter can be best used in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
applications of the composite material to the manufacture of building elements, or other applications relating to construction.
A well known shortcoming of thin sheet materials is that they are able, although exhibiting high compositional strength, to withstand appreciable compressive stresses due to their lack of rigidity. In the present case it is contemplated to obtain the necessary degree of rigidity and the resulting possibility of utilizing compressive strength by adhering the surface material to the core or bottom as described above. In addition to stabilizing the surface material, the bottom or core is itself an excellent low density thermal and acoustic insulator, which means that the resulting composite product is light, stiff and a poor conductor of heat. heat and sound.
Furthermore, if the composite product is employed as a beam or prop it is able to withstand relatively high loads without appreciable deformation or buckling. This particular characteristic is of greatest interest in the building industry where the product can be used for the execution of floors and ceilings or roofing panels, as well as for the construction of exterior walls or interior partitions which may having to support either the roof or the upper floors of buildings.
The surface material may consist of any known sheet material, such as plywood, thin sheet, 1, this synthetic resin in sheets, paper or cardboard, impregnated or not, and fabrics of any kind used either separately. either in combination, while the core or the bottom which it is advantageous to use, must exhibit at least the minimum of physical properties indicated in the description of the aforementioned patent. The shear modulus, the elastic limit of shear , and tensile strength are essential conditions for a good stabilized material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
feels; compressive strength is essential for stability and to allow easy execution of the desired construction;
thermal insulation is essential to obtain favorable properties from a thermal point of view; the. resistance to the action of heat is essential so that deterioration does not occur under the conditions where the composite material is used and the low density to make handling easy and also to reduce the dead weight of the building s Great use is made in its execution of this type of material which can be advantageously used for the construction of exterior walls or partitions, interior, furnishings and other purposes.
It will be found that the compound material increases the sound reduction coefficient compared to that of the surface material taken alone, both in terms of the reduction of the actual sound transmission and of the sound absorption, resulting in the elimination. sound repercussions and the transmission of noise from vibrations in the building.
For general uses the bottom or core is executed in the form of plates or slabs with flat surfaces and constant thickness, so that the final product has. the form of planks or flat sheets.
Any plywood can be attached to the bottom or core with liquid, powder or film glue or any other adhesive.
Alternatively, a special form of plywood can be employed, consisting of only two sheets on either side of the bottom or core and in this case the four composite layers are all glued together in a single pressing operation. In the same way, it is possible to attach to the core of the sheet either directly or by means of one or more intermediate layers of paper, fabric or wood. Others @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The surface covering materials employed can all be secured to the core or the bottom or backing by means of a suitable adhesive and the compression can be carried out either hot or cold, or at intermediate temperatures depending on the types of adhesives employed. .
If desired, stiffeners can be incorporated. additional softwood or hardwood or other material, inserting them into the core or the bottom before applying the surface material.
Likewise, if one wishes to use the composite material for a specific purpose, as disclosed in a patent entitled Improvements to construction elements and their instructions for use, the bottom or core can be placed in a jig of so that it can be assembled in a predetermined position relative to the cover sheet (s), to facilitate subsequent assembly of adjoining sections of the composite material.
The invention is not limited to the production of flat sheets or sheets. The compound material can be made in a curved or other geometric shape, especially by using suitable molds instead of the aforementioned flat press.
In the foregoing, the physical properties which can be expected from the composite material produced according to the invention have been enumerated. The following tables show additional physical properties which can be obtained by combining the core or bottom with the cover sheet (s) to form the material according to the invention.
