<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Sheet metal nail '. and its manufacturing process.
The present invention relates to sheet metal nails and aims to. available in the industry of nails of this kind of very simple design, very light and nevertheless possessing strength and rigidity largely sufficient for driving into wood or other not too hard materials.
It also relates to a manufacturing process for obtaining nails without complicated tools and without appreciable loss of material and even in some cases without any loss.
This nail is characterized in that it is formed in the main order of a sheet metal rod provided with at least one longitudinal bend so as to create a profile giving the nail the necessary rigidity.
Various types of nails in accordance with the invention and then the manufacturing process will be described below, by way of illustration only and with the aid of the accompanying drawings.
As shown in Figure 1, the nail, object of the invention, is formed of a simple sheet metal rod comprising longitudinally a fold 1 so as to create at least two wings 2-3 and to give rise to a profile giving the nail the necessary rigidity.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The two wings 2-3 can have the same width over their entire length as in the case of figure 1, but this width can also decrease gradually towards the tip (wings 21-31 - fig. 2)
On the other hand, each of the wings 2-3 can be fitted upwards with a small lateral tab 4 forced by a fold of the corresponding wing; this gives rise to a widening of the nail and increases 1. resistance to tearing compared to wood or other material (figure 3).
Instead of having a rectilinear profile, the wings and 3 can also have a curved profile (fig. 4).
FIG. 5 relates to an embodiment in which there is provided upwards a small head 5 bent during manufacture or after completion of the nail (FIG. 5).
Each of the wings may also include, over part of its length and on its edges, saw teeth 6 (fig? 6)
If the tips of the teeth are turned down (fig. 6A), penetration is facilitated and takes place like a saw cutting wood.
In the case of FIG. 6 (tips of the teeth directed upwards), there is a prevention of easy extraction of the nail; This is mainly true for nails made of a metal such as brass which could otherwise by their nature be easily extracted by simple sliding.
The rod can also be folded up to include three wings 7-8-9 giving rise to the profile shown in the upper part of figure 7.
The profile according to figure 7 can be modified to give rise to the profile shown in figure 8, in which the sharp edges are omitted.
The manufacture of such nails can be done very easily and very quickly from a sheet metal strip 10 (Fig. 9) in which is created transversely folds or corrugations 11 for example by passing between splined cylinders. This band is then driven by these cylinders

sifs following the ABC D 1 contours !; and E F G HI ... and so on. As a result, the elements having their points at E, I, etc.; Fall of themselves like a trash, which gives rise to nails C, D, E; F, G and G, H, I, J, K, etc.
In FIG. 9, the application of the process to the manufacture of a nail according to FIG. 2 has been shown diagrammatically, but the same method can be used in the case of nails of another type.
FIG. 10 represents the application in the case of a nail according to FIG. 4 and FIG. 11 in the case of a nail according to FIG. 12.
In Figures 10 and 11, the method is the same as in Figure 9, but one must provide on the side of the tip of the stamped nails an additional cut successively along the lines LM, NO, etc.
The belt is driven in such a way as to create a synchronization between the movement of the grooved cylinders and that of the pressure cutting punch.
The fluted fold-forming cylinders can be replaced by a bending tool (punch and die for example) which can be mounted in a die combined with the die-cutting device.
In any case, one could also cut the nails flat from the strip 10 while keeping the latter its planar shape and then proceed to a separate bending of each nail, but the process described above is obvious. - more economical.
The. nail profiles which have been shown have been given purely by way of example and many variations can be envisaged.
The use of these nails is recommended because of their lightness and their solidity when driving into /

wood or a material of the same kind not presenting too much hardness.
As for the manufacture, it can take place in a particularly simple manner and without loss of material or with very little loss.
