Perfectionnements aux groupes propulseurs marins à vapeur.
EMI1.1
--------¯.¯--
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Le mode de fonctionnement d'un groupe propulseur marin comprenant des turbines de marche avant et de marche arrière suivant l'invention est cara.ctérisé par le fait de fournir, pour la marche avant, de la vapeur surchauffée; de fournir, pour la marche arrière, de la vapeur tempérée par un passage à travers un températeur du type comprenant un vase qui contient des surfaces d'échange de chaleur, et qui est établi de façon que du liquide venant d'un ballon de la chaudière qui fournit la vapeur puisse circuler naturellement dans ce vase;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
tirants.

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvements to marine steam propellants.
EMI1.1
-------- ¯.¯--
The present invention relates to a. Marine power unit, comprising forward and reverse motors and operating with steam, which for forward travel is supplied in the overheated state. For reasons that will be readily understood, reverse turbines are designed to operate with less power than forward turbines. Therefore, and to avoid high superheating of the steam passing from a reverse turbine to the associated condenser, overheating of the. steam when it is supplied for reverse gear must be interrupted or reduced.
The object of the invention is to ensure the "tempering" (term which will be used herein to denote the lowering of the temperature of the superheated steam) of the. steam during reverse gear, and this in a manner applicable both when the steam is produced by a boiler operating with several gas outlets and when this steam is produced by a boiler operating with a single gas outlet, the purpose of the invention being carried out by means which are arranged outside the parts of the steam generator subjected to pressure, and yes are simple and safe to operate.
A marine propulsion unit comprising a steam generator and a superheater called to supply superheated steam which, in forward gear, should not, or should not always, be tempered, is characterized, according to the present invention, by a temperature regulator. type comprising a vessel which contains surfaces forming a heat exchanger and which is intended to reduce the temperature of the superheated steam going to a reverse engine, while in forward motion, when the temperation of this steam is not necessary , this vessel is intended to be reheated without reducing, or without reducing to a great extent, the temperature of the steam supplied for the forward drive,
and this to a degree assuring the "temperator" of an appropriate temperature for its application in the tempering of the steam for the reverse.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The mode of operation of a marine propulsion unit comprising forward and reverse turbines according to the invention is chara.ctérisé by the fact of providing, for forward travel, superheated steam; to supply tempered vapor for the reverse operation by passage through a temperator of the type comprising a vessel which contains heat exchange surfaces, and which is so established that liquid from a flask of the boiler which provides the steam can circulate naturally in this vessel;
and to maintain the natural circulation during forward travel, by supplying the liquid, which constitutes the natural circulation circuit, with heat from the superheated steam, and this without reducing, or without significantly reducing, the temperature of the steam supplied for walking forward.
The invention will be described below by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side view of a temperator, taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 2 is an end view and in section of the temperator, taken along the line II-II of FIG. l; and
Fig. 5 is a schematic view of part of a marine propulsion unit.
The temperator shown in figs. 1 and 2 comprises main heat exchange surfaces formed by a bundle of U tubes 1 and auxiliary heat exchange surfaces formed by U tubes 2. The ends of tubes 1 and 2 are crimped into a plate tubular 3, clamped between a manifold 4 and a pressure-proof vessel 5 by means of bolts passing through flanges 6 and 7, respectively, of manifold 4 and vessel 5. Suitable gaskets 8 and 9 are provided. interposed between the flanges 6 and 7 and the tube plate 3, in order to ensure pressure-tight seals.
The vessel 5 has, near the tube plate 3, a liquid inlet pipe 10, to which is added a deflector 11, called to direct towards the tube plate the liquid which enters the vessel, while, in its upper part, at the far end of the tube plate, the vessel 5 is provided with a fluid outlet 12. its lower part, near the tube plate, the vessel 5 is provided with a drain 13.
The upper and lower limbs of tubes 1 and 2 pass through openings in plates 14 and 15 respectively which hold said tubes in the desired position and are placed first, upper, towards the mid-length of the upper limbs of the tubes, and the second, lower, near the elbows of the tubes, the latter plate resting on the bottom of the vase. Tie rods 16, 17, 18 and 19 are screwed into the tube plate 3, the tie rods 16 and 19 penetrating into orifices made respectively in the plates 14 and 15, stretched that the tie rods 17 and 18 enter both holes performed in plates 14 and 15.
Nuts 20 screwed onto the ends of the tie rods and spacer sleeves 21 mounted on the tie rods serve to hold said plates in the desired position on the rods.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tie rods. The plates 14 and 15 serve as baffles, in order to force the liquid which passes through the vessel 5 to direct itself transversely with respect to the tubes.
The manifold 4 is divided by a diametrical partition 22 and a curved partition 23 into a steam inlet chamber 24, a steam outlet chamber 25 and an auxiliary steam outlet chamber 26. A superheated steam inlet pipe 27 communicates with the inlet chamber 24, while a main steam outlet 28 and an auxiliary steam outlet 29 respectively communicate with the steam outlet chamber 25 and the auxiliary steam outlet chamber 26.
The lower members of the tubes 1 communicate with the steam inlet chamber 24, the lower members of the tubes 2 communicate with the auxiliary steam outlet chamber 26, while the upper members of the tubes 1 and 2 all communicate with the steam chamber. steam outlet 25.
In the device described above, the steam inlet pipe 27 and the inlet chamber 24 are called upon to feed the tubes 1 and 2, since the steam coming from the inlet chamber flows through the tubes. tubes 1 to the steam outlet chamber 25, from which steam can escape and through the main steam outlet 28, and through the tubes 2, 1a. auxiliary steam outlet chamber 26 and 1 auxiliary steam outlet 29.
In the mode of application of the object of the invention shown in FIG. 3, two identical marine boilers, each comprising a combustion chamber and steam generating surfaces (not shown), are each provided with a steam and liquid balloon 30 or 30 ', with a superheater 31 or 31' and a temperator 32 or 32 ', the latter constructed as it has been described with reference to figs. 1 and 2.
Each boiler may be of the type having a single gas outlet on the side of the 'steam and water tank, the design of the boilers' and superheaters being such that when a boiler is operating at normal load, as is the case. the case when both boilers are operating, the degree of superheating reached does not make the temperature necessary. If, however, a boiler is pushed, which can occur when only one boiler is operating, the overheating may reach an undesirable high value, so that tempering of the steam becomes necessary.
The inlet of each superheater is joined, by means of a pipe 33 or 33 ', to a steam outlet of the balloon 30 or 30' of the corresponding boiler, the outlet of each superheater being joined, by a pipe 34 or 34 ', at the steam inlet 27 or 27' of the corresponding temperator, and, by a pipe 35 or 35 ', a valve 36 or 36', a pipe 37 or 37 'and a pipe? 8, to. a common main steam intake pipe 39. The main steam outlet 28 or 28 'of each temperator is joined by a pipe 40 or 40', a valve 41 or 41 'and a. pipe 42 or 42 'to the aforementioned common main pipe 39, while the auxiliary steam outlet 29 or 2' of each temperator is joined by a pipe 43 or 43 ', a valve 44 or 44' and a pipe 45 or 45 ' to a common steam intake pipe 46.
The steam supplied by pipe 46 can be directed to any auxiliary or substitute apparatus.

When the valves occupy these latter positions, part of the steam which flows through the pipe 34 of the superheater 31 to the common main pipe 39 follows the path which includes the pipe 35, the valve 36, the pipe 37 and the pipe. pipe 38, while, given the resistance that this path opposes, another part of the steam flows through the tubes 1 of the temperator 32, the pipe 40, la. valve 41 and pipe 42.

is tempered by its passage through tubes 1 and 2 of temperature 32.
Likewise, when the. boiler which comprises the balloon 30 'operates alone, the valves 36, 41 and 45 are closed, the valves 41' and 44 'are fully open and the valve 36' is partially open to a suitable degree.
In reverse, whether there is one or both boilers in operation, valves 36 and 36 'are closed.
When the two boilers are operating, the valves 41, 41 ', 44 and 44' are open, so that the steam which flows to the common main pipe 39 is then tempered as it passes through the tubes 1 of temperatures 32 and 32 ', while the va.peur going to the common supply pipe 46 is then tempered as it passes through the tubes 1 and 2 of the temperers 32 and 32'.
When, in reverse, the boiler which includes the balloon 30 operates alone, the valves 36, 36 ', 41' and 44 'are closed and the valves 41 and 44 are open. Likewise, when, in reverse, the boiler comprising the balloon 30 'operates alone, the valves 36, 36', 41 and 44 are closed and the valves 41 'and 44' are open.
When it is necessary to adjust the temperature of the. steam going to the turbine (s) in reverse, a certain proportion of the superheated steam can pass directly to the turbine (s), without passing through the temperature 32 or 32 ', and this by opening the valves 36. and 36 'to a suitable degree, with, if necessary, closing valves 41 and 41' to a suitable degree.
Since the steam which flows to the common supply line 46 passes through the tubes 1 and 2 of a temperator throughout. duration of operation of the corresponding boiler, la. circulation of the liquid between the steam and liquid tank of the boiler, on the one hand, and the vessel of the temperator, on the other hand, is maintained during the forward gear, as during the reverse gear, so that the temperator is maintained at an appropriate temperature for the initiation of its operation. A thermal shock is thus avoided, as well as undesirable tensions due to the sudden heating of the constituent metal of the temperator.
The steam which flows from). 'Boiler-superheater assembly to the supply line 46 is cooled to a temperature lower than that of the steam which flows towards the reverse turbine (s) during reverse operation, given that all the steam coming from the boiler passes through the tubes 1 of the corresponding temperator, and that the part of the steam which goes to the supply line 46 passes, for its part, through the tubes 2 of the temperator.
In some cases it may be advantageous to employ a temperator which does not have auxiliary heat exchange surfaces, the steam for auxiliary or additional devices using steam being withdrawn from the main outlet chamber. of the temperator. Alternatively, a temperator may be provided with auxiliary heat exchange surfaces constituted by a number of tubular paths or passages connected in series, provided for the flow.

superheated steam.
In addition, a temperator can be provided with an auxiliary inlet chamber which. provides access to auxiliary heat exchange surfaces, as well as an auxiliary outlet chamber, such that steam going to auxiliary or additional appliances using steam passes through the auxiliary heat exchange surfaces, without passing through the tubes which constitute the main heat exchange surfaces of the temperator. In this case, the pressure of the steam going to the auxiliary inlet chamber can be reduced to the desired value by restricting it.
In the powertrain shown in fig. 3, the value supplied to the supply line 46 passes through the superheater 31 or 31 'during the start-up of the corresponding boiler, so that the danger - if any - of an excessive heating of the superheater during start-up is reduced or eliminated.
In certain cases, in particular when the danger of an excessive heating of a superheater during the start-up does not exist, it may be more advantageous to use, in the auxiliary or additional vaporization apparatus, the saturated steam obtained. directly from the steam tank and the boiler fluid corresponding to the superheater in question.
In this case, the superheated steam intended for the forward turbine or turbines can be used to maintain the temperature of a temperator during forward operation. To this end, and during forward travel, the temperator can be connected in parallel with a section of superheated steam pipe going to the forward turbine (s), a throttle, consisting of an orifice for example, being if necessary inserted in this section of steam line, in order to ensure the desired flow of steam to. through the temperator.
Alternatively, the temperator can be heated other than by superheated steam. For example, the fluid coming from tubes which ensure the cooling of a wall of the furnace of the boiler corresponding to this temperator can be conducted through the vessel of the temperator.
In an installation of the type described, each of the side walls of the hearth of a Babcock & Wilcox marine boiler is cooled by a vertical row of tubes inclined to the horizontal and joined by their lower ends to an intake manifold and by their upper ends to a starting manifold. The intake manifolds are joined, in the normal way, by descending tubes, to the liquid space of the boiler flask, the outlet manifold from one wall being joined, also in the normal way to the space of steam from the boiler tank.
However, as regards the other wall, the starting manifold is joined by a tube showing to the liquid inlet pipe of the vessel of the temperator, this pipe being, in this case usefully arranged so as to move towards the down instead of facing up, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The fluid outlet of this vessel is joined by another tube rising to the vapor space of the boiler tank.
Thanks to this arrangement, the tubes lining the walls of the fireplace and interposed in the natural circulation circuit of the temperator are heated throughout the duration of the operation of the boiler, so that the circulation
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is ensured at all times and that the temperator is maintained, during forward travel, when tempering is not required, at a suitable temperature for the initiation of a tempering operation.
The arrangement of a temperator as shown in FIG. 3 can be easily applied to boilers of different types, since apart from the provision of a falling tube and a rising tube, joining the vessel of the temperator to the vapor and liquid tank of the corresponding boiler, the design of the boiler must not meet any special conditions.
