<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

milling machine with pivoting and sliding head @ @ Milling machines with sliding and pivoting head are already known, allowing the tool holder to be brought to a certain distance from the frame without having to touch the transmissions operating the main shaft. In some of these milling machines, the tool spindle can also be oriented around a center which is generally on the axis of the teat itself. It follows that the tool's attack plane can have a host of directions. However, such cutters have the drawback of not being sufficiently stiff for certain jobs. In addition, the distance between the milling machine table and the tool's attack plane is almost limited to the stroke of the table itself.
These milling machines require, like the generally used models, special devices making it possible to support the head of the milling cutter when the latter is at the end of its travel when it leaves the frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the present invention is a milling machine of the same type, that is to say having a sliding and pivoting head, but it is characterized in that it comprises a tool-holder spindle which can be oriented around it. 'an axis perpendicular to a rartagemert plane passing through the axis around which the sliding tate pivots
It follows from this arrangement that, compared with the milling machines referred to above, the distance between the table and the tool can be increased or reduced by the distance separating the axis of the smoothing head and the axis of rotation of the tool-holder spindle,
It is also possible to give the bearings of the tool-holder spindle a diameter and a sufficient mass to be able to use cutters at high flow and at high speed without having to crainare vibrations which affect the cleanliness of the work performed.
Other advantages of the arrangement characterizing the milling machine according to the invention will be enumerated in the description of the exemplary embodiment shown in the drawings. In the latter, which represent of the machine only what is necessary for the understanding of the invention, FIG. 1 is a section through a vertical plane passing through the main shaft of the head of the milling machine, FIG. 2 is a similar section but seen from the other side of the machine, FIG. 3 is a partial section along the line III-III of FIG. 1, FIG. 4 is a partial view to smaller
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
scale than the previous ones of the whole machine and shows the head in one of its positions, another position is shown in fig.
5, in figo 6, the machine head is supported by combined straps with a counter bearing which is also used in figs 7, 8 and 9, which respectively show the milling head in positions different, the iig. 10 is an end view of the milling machine head with the tool spindle in its uppermost horizontal position.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 which show only parts of the milling head, what we see of the machine frame is denoted by 1. It has, at its top, a cylindrical bore 2 of large dimensions, split longitudinally and in which is fitted with greasy friction a hollow cylinder 4, which constitutes the outer casing of the sliding and pivoting head of the milling machine * This cylinder can be locked in several places by means of a single lever 3 (fig. & 6).
In the end of the frame 1 is fixed a bearing 5 in which turns the main shaft 6 of the machine.
This .., this is attacked by a pulley 7 moved by transmission means not shown connecting this pulley, either to the boot at speeds, or to the engine depending on the type of actuation adopted.
The main shaft 6 is extended inside the hollow cylinder 4 by a part having keyways 8 along which can slide
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
keys not shown provided inside a pin 9 meshing with another pinion 10 wedged on the end of a transmission shaft 11 which extends from one end of the hollow cylinder 4 in which it is rotated. The other end of this transmission shaft 11 carries an angle pinion 12 in mechanical relation with another angle pinion 13 integral with a shaft 14, pivoted in the end of the hollow cylinder 4 and whose geo axis - metric is perpendicular to a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the hollow cylinder.
This shaft 14 carries at its end an angle pinion 15 which meshes with another angle pinion 16 integral with the tool-holder spindle 17 The latter rotates in a bearing body 18, having a lock 19 adjusted. on a flat surface 20 perpendicular to the geometric axis of the shaft 14. The sole 19 is held on this flat surface by bolts 22 see FIG. 7 and 8), the heads of which can slide in grooves 21 concentric with the shaft 14. It follows that the tool spindle 17 can rotate around the geometric axis of the shaft 14 and be adjusted in any position around this tree.
A graduation 23 is provided on the sole (see fig. 5 and 6) which allows the exact inclination of the tool-holder spindle relative to a position in which its geometric axis is parallel to the surface 20, therefore parallel to the 'geometric axis of 1 transmission shaft 11.
The bearing body 18 of the tool-holder spindle 17 is of such height that it fits inside the half available in the end of the cylindrical bore.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
drique 2 In the position shown in fig. 1 where the cylindrical body 4 has completely entered this bore, the milling cutter which is fixed at the end of the tool-holder spindle is very close to the frame of the machine o The hollow cylinder has a dimension such that its moment of resistance is a multiple of those which are generally used in the sliding heads of such machines.
In the position of the drawing it is therefore in any case more than sufficient to receive without vibrations the whole of the reaction of the tool on the workpiece. When the hollow cylinder is taken out of the bore to adapt the position of the milling cutter to the work requirements, as is for example shown in figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the drawing, the entire head is still supported by means of straps 25, of known construction, the slots of which meet on a central pin 26 provided on the outside of a counter-bearing 27 having two bores.
Each of these bores is arranged to receive respectively one end of two support arms 28. There are therefore on each side of the transmission shaft 11 the passages and guides necessary for these support arms that the can be made to disappear at will in the hollow cylinder 4. There is provided, at the end of the head, lever nuts 29 (see fig. 4 to 10) by means of which these support arms can be locked in place.
The distance of these two support arms around the main axis of the machine being always the same and the central journal 26 being coaxial with the main shaft 6, it follows that, the straps 25 being in place on the central journal 26, we can despite this
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and without any disassembly, turn the entire head, therefore cylinder 4 and all the parts which are integral with it, around the main axis without having to disassemble the least thing.
The operation of the hollow cylinder 4 around the main shaft 6 is effected by means of a toothed ring 30, fixed to a tubular extension 31 of the hollow cylinder 4. This toothed ring 30 meshes with a pinion 32 driven in rotation. by a shaft 33 along which it can slide to follow the longitudinal movements of the hollow cylinder 4. The shaft 33 is driven by a gear 34, one of the toothed wheels of which is clamped at the end of another shaft 35, pivoted in the frame and in relation by means of two angle pinions 36 with a shaft 37, perpendicular to the shaft 35. A flywheel 40 is keyed on this shaft 37; through it, it is therefore possible to rotate the shaft 33 and act on the toothed crown 30 to bring the hollow cylinder into any position around the main shaft 6.
It should be noted that the fear adjustment is done well on one side than on the other and that one is not linked to a given direction of rotation. A graduation in degrees 50 (see fig. 9 and 10) is provided on a disc 21, at the end of the head, which makes it possible to determine very exactly the position of the hollow cylinder and therefore of the entire head relative to an initial position in which the shaft 14 is exactly perpendicular to table 50 of the milling machine.
The shaft 37 is introduced into a hollow shaft 38 which carries at one end a pinion 39 and at the other a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
flywheel 41 This pinion 39, which can be seen particularly in FIG. 2 and 3, is in relation to a similar pinion 42 fixed to the end of a shaft 43 in mechanical relation, by means of a gear 44, with a screw 45, parallel to the shaft 43 and symmetrically arranged relative to the main shaft. On this screw 45 runs a threaded lug 46 integral with a sleeve 47 fitted with greasy friction on the tubular extension 31 next to the toothed ring 30.
The whole is held in place by means of a ring 48 and screws 49 By handling the handwheel 41, the screw 45 is therefore rotated and acted through the lug 46 and the sleeve 47 on the hollow cylinder 4 to give it longitudinal movement. This can take place regardless of the position of the hollow cylinder around the main shaft 6
Both handwheels 40 and 41 can be operated at the same time, so that the longitudinal and pivoting movements can be performed simultaneously
We see in fig.
4 the position of the sliding and pivoting head as it appears when the hollow cylinder has been turned by 180 relative to the position it occupies in fig. 1
In fig 5, the whole head has been brought rather forward without however having to be supported by means of the support arms 28 and the straps 25. The tool spindle 17 is always parallel to the shaft. main
In the position of figo 6, the shaft whose spindle-putil has been turned by 90 relative to the position

which it occupied in fig. 5, the counter bearing is in place on the end of the support arms 280
In fig 7, the tool holder spindle 17 is vertical. In figo 8, it is at an angle, In fig.
9 shows another position of the tool holder spindle and the use of the straps in combination with the counter bearing.
In fig 10, the hollow cylinder 4 has been rotated by 180 relative to the position of the pin 1 and the tool spindle has also been rotated by 90
