<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Drum brake for bicycles.
The present invention relates to a drum brake comprising; on the one hand, an open brake ring housed inside the drum and designed to be enlarged by expansion by means of a cam despite the antagonism of a spring and, on the other hand, a brake lever placed likewise inside the drum and at the free end of which is fixed a tractior cable.
Drum brakes of this type, the brake lever of which is placed inside their drum and actuated by means of a traction cable, have the disadvantage of making repairs to the wheel or to the brake very difficult. himself. In fact, when the rode provided with such a brake is removed, the wheel remains suspended from the traction cable, which makes it necessary to repair the defective wheel on site without being able to release it and transport it to a repair shop.
This drawback is avoided thanks to the invention which provides in the fixed cover of the drum a closable slot through which it is possible, after having detached the traction cable from the braking lever, to release this cable laterally.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one of the possible mechanical embodiments of the subject of the invention.
Figure l 'is a sectional view taken through the brake at the level of line I - I, fig.2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Figure 2 is a partial sectional view along the line II - II, fig.l.
Figure 3 is a partial sectional view along the line III - III, fig.4.
FIG. 4 is a side view of the brake, assuming that it is viewed in the direction indicated by the arrow IV drawn in fig.2.
In the example shown, 1 designates the axle, 2 the hub provided with the drum 3 of a brake for bicycles or other cycles.
This brake drum 3 is closed by a cup-shaped cover 4 provided with a projecting arm 5 integral with it which is fixed in the usual manner to the frame of the bicycle and which is intended to withstand the reaction forces caused by braking. Inside the drum 3 is a brake ring 7 provided with a friction lining 6 and subjected to the action of a spring. This brake ring can be enlarged by expansion against the antagonism of this spring by a control cam 9 rotatably mounted in a bearing flange 8.
Inside the drum 3 and between the front wall of the cover 4 and the bearing flange 8 is arranged a brake lever 10 which is fitted onto the shaft of the cam 9 and which is mechanically connected by means of a plate locking 11 to this cam 9. The free end of the braking lever 10 is bent towards the inside of the drum and shaped in the form of a stick. In this stick 12 can pivot an eyelet 13 to which is fixed the core 14 of a traction cable. The bent end of the stick 12 is cut by a slot 15 extending in the pivot plane of the braking lever 10 and providing passage to the core 14 of the cable.
In the front wall of the cover 4 of the drum 3 and in the direction of the part of the core 14 of the cable which is inside this drum is formed a slot 16 with a dovetail profile which can be closed by means of a slide 17
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
having bordering walls adapting exactly to the slopes of this slot 16 and leveling off flush with the cover 4.
The sheath 18 of the core 14 of the cable is fitted into a lug 19 from the foundry with the fixed cover 4 of the drum and rests against a projection 20 of the lug 19, which prevents this sheath from moving axially. in the recess of this mump. The passage of the core 14 of the cable through the step
20 is provided by a slot 21 open on the side facing the slide 17 and communicating with the slot 16.
While, in known brakes of this type, the traction cable remains attached to the wheel when it is dismantled, which is an obstacle for its transport to a repair shop, here on the contrary, thanks to the perfect construction. = Tied, the wheel provided with the brake can be removed separately while the traction cable remains attached to the frame of the bicycle.
To do this, simply release the slide 17 from the cover.
4 of the drum 3, then after having slackened the traction cable, to bring out of the stick 12 integral with the braking lever the eyelet 13 fixed to the core of the cable. The sheath 18 can then be extracted from the cable by pulling it through the recess of the lug 19, 'then laterally release the core 14 of the cable through the slots 21 and 16. The pulling cable is then entirely separated from the cable. brake. To reunite the cable and the brake, simply repeat these operations in reverse order.
