n Machine for kneading and upsetting the materials
plastics and more particularly thermoplastics "
In certain cases, in order to obtain tubes and endless profiled parts by means of injection of materials in the molten or pasty state, it is necessary for the thrust, generally exerted by worm screws, to be very strong to overcome
the friction produced by contact with the walls of the worm and the die. In these cases, the material being worked tends to form with the screws a unitary block or a cylindrical part rotating at the same speed as the screws,
without advancing further in the machine. This phenomenon occurs very often, especially when working thermoplastics at temperatures very close to their softening point.
We tried to control this unfortunate trend,
or at least to reduce it, by providing obstacles inside the body of the machine or means for cooling the materials in the vicinity of the inlet opening and for gradually heating them during the travel of the screws to the point fusion. However, these methods have not produced a satisfactory result, mainly because the path
material in the machine is for construction reasons fairly short and therefore it is not possible to homogenize the mass which produces lack of homogeneity of the profiled part at the outlet of the die. However, if one also incorporates plasticizers or in general liquids in the mass to be drawn, these additions may not mix uniformly with the solid support and subsequently reach the surface of the part. profiled.

or coloring.
The object of the present invention is to completely eliminate these drawbacks by providing on the machine a central endless screw and a series of endless screws surrounding the latter and whose helioes are engaged with those of the central endless screw. Thanks to this arrangement, the path of the materials through the machine is appreciably prolonged and the said materials are obliged to constantly change direction, so that a perfect homogenization of the mass is obtained which also has time to d. '' achieve the exact melting and gelation temperature. In addition, this prevents the material from forming a block integral with the worm screws, which ensures regular thrust of the materials towards the drawing opening.
There is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings an embodiment of a machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial cross-sectional view thereof.
Fig.2 is a longitudinal section.
In drawing 1 designates the casing of the machine constituted by a tubular body whose wall is hollowed out internally to form four cylindrical cells 2 offset by 90 [deg.].
Along the axis of the tubular body 1 is mounted a
central endless screw capable of turning around this
axis and the cells 2 carry four worm screws 4 of which
the propellers are meshed with the propeller of the central worm as described in the Italian patent

The plastic material to be worked is introduced by means of a hopper, not shown, into one end

are caused to rotate simultaneously, Thus the materials are pushed back, so as to follow a helical path <EMI ID = 4.1>
by the arrows in fig. 2 .. for an advance corresponding to the pitch of the helix of the worm, the materials are forced to travel a path whose length is substantially the sum of the depths of the cell walls and entails to repeated changes of direction on the said route.
We thus obtain an intimate mixture of the constituent elements of the masses which reach, in a good state

at the opposite end of the tubular body. The markedly greater length of the path furthermore makes it possible to easily regulate the temperature and the pressure so that any irregularity in the advance of the materials is avoided, which thus arrives in the best conditions for the operation. stretching in the compression chamber.
It is advantageous that the diameter of the central worm is taken to be larger than that of the outer worms, which improves the homogenization due to
the greater peripheral speed of the central worm

stretching of the mass.
In general, it is necessary to significantly strengthen the compression of the materials between the filling opening of the machine and the outlet opening. This can be done in different ways: for example, the central and external worm screws can be given a decreasing pitch so that the passage width decreases from the beginning to the end of the path; or the endless screws receive a conical shape, in which case their axes have an inclination equal to the angle at the top of the cones; or we can
