Injection molding machine with pre-plasticization
The present invention relates to an injection molding machine with preplasticization, comprising an injection chamber, means for heating said chamber, a screw conveyor comprising at least two conveyor screws capable of rotating in the same direction and of sliding longitudinally. inside the chamber, a motor assembly slidably mounted and intended to drive said conveyor screws in rotation by means of gears, and a hydraulically actuated piston and intended to move said screw conveyor by sliding in said chamber injection, this conveyor, the engine assembly and said piston being connected to each other and capable of sliding as a whole.
It has been found to be impractical to use a single screw both as a ram for injection and as a mixer or as a plasticizer. Indeed, when a single screw is moved forward to force the plastic material through a nozzle, a significant part of this material tends to flow backward between the threads of the screw. Since the cross section of the space between the threads is usually much larger than the straight section of the nozzle, in order to provide the desired pressure at the nozzle, it is necessary to plug the injection chamber.
This problem has been solved by using two screws meshing with each other, as shown in the main patent, each screw having threads at its exit or outer end which practically block the space between adjacent threads of the thread. another screw, in the plane containing the axes of the two screws. Since the material to be molded, for example a thermoplastic material, is very viscous, thus obtaining an effective seal against a back flow. It is obvious that a certain clearance between the threads of the two screws in this area and between the screws and the injection chamber is necessary, as in any machine.
When subjected to the injection pressure, the viscous material flowing back between the threads must travel at right angles to the applied force, following a figure-eight path, first around a screw and then around each other, through several tightenings that occur where the spaces between the threads of each screw are blocked by the threads of the cooperating screw. In such a machine, each thread of the end section can occupy approximately 99 O / o of the space between adjacent threads of the cooperating screw, in the plane containing the axes of these screws.
A machine comprising two twin screws having mutually meshing threads, of uniform dimensions from one end of the screws to the other, could probably be used for certain purposes.
Commonly used plastics are characterized by compression ratios, expressing that their volume after plasticization is significantly smaller than their volume in the granular state ready to be introduced into the plasticizer. As a result, if the threads of the screws are uniform from end to end, the inlet section will not accept as large a volume of material as the outlet section can handle. On the other hand, if the volume available at the inlet end is greater than at the outlet end, a smaller number of rotations is required between injections to fill the outlet section and the result is a larger machine. efficient and faster.
For this reason, an extruding machine of the screw type has already been proposed, having meshing screws, the diameters of which at the base of the teeth of successive sections of the screws are successively reduced. However, this causes a modification of the external diameter of the threads and of the internal diameter of the enveloping wall. It follows that these known screws cannot be used as injection rams, since they cannot move in a reciprocating motion due to the different diameters of the various sections.
An object of the present invention is to obtain screws in which the volume available between the threads or swept volume is greater at the inlet end than at the outlet end, but whose external diameters are uniform, so that the screws can take a reciprocating movement.
The purpose of this arrangement is to allow the optimum amount of material to be accepted in the screws and to allow a controlled return current near the inlet end, so that the outlet section, which acts as a counter, does not receive material under very high pressures. This can reduce the power required to turn the screws.
The mixing and kneading action of the screws is not significantly affected by this return flow which causes the material entering the exit section to be fully plasticized, thoroughly mixed and of uniform temperature.
The machine forming the object of the present invention is characterized in that the outlet end of each screw has several threads arranged to practically block the space between the adjacent threads of the other screw in the plane containing the axes of the two. screws, so as to prevent substantially any back flow of molding material between the screws and to allow the screws to act effectively as a ram when they are moved longitudinally in the injection chamber.
The appended drawing represents partially and by way of example an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partially in section, of two screws included in this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a cross section, on a smaller scale, through the outlet end of these two screws.
The screws shown include threads 3 in their outlet section, or outer end, which practically fill the spaces between the threads of the cooperating screw in the plane containing the axes of the screws, so as to block any possibility of a reverse current. noticeable when the screws are moved in a reciprocating motion in the manner of a ram, as described in the main patent and for the reasons indicated above.
The diameter of the screws at the base of the teeth can be 52mm, the outside diameter 79mm, and the pitch 25.4mm. In the outlet section, the head width 4 of the threads can be 7.6mm. The leading surfaces 5 of the threads are inclined to the root at an angle of 130. In the entry section, the leading surfaces 6 of the threads are trimmed so that the angle of inclination over the root is from 310.
It follows that the head width 7 of the threads at this end is reduced to 3.6 mm and that spaces 8 are formed between the adjacent threads in the plane containing the axes of the screws. The swept volume in this section is thus increased to about one and a half times that of the output section. Since this value is less than the compression ratio of any thermoplastic material commonly used, it is not necessary to change the screws or the compression chamber when different materials are used.
The meshing twin screws are mounted in an injection chamber 9 surrounded by heating elements 10 (Fig. 2) and are described in detail in the main patent.
