"Gear shift mechanism"
The present invention relates to a gear change mechanism intended primarily, but not exclusively, for bicycles and in which the gear change is achieved by backpedaling or backpedaling of the drive shaft and where a Gear train combined with a member mounted on the driven shaft is controlled by pairs of spring pawls integral with the drive shaft.
The present invention is an improvement of this already known type of gear change.
The mechanism according to the invention is characterized in that the driven member is supported on the motor shaft side by at least two roller bearings and on the housing side by at least one roller bearing radially and axially by at least one roller bearing. minus a thrust ball bearing.
The appended drawing represents by way of example an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the device,
Fig. 2 a section along line 11-11 of FIG. and
Fig. 3 a section along the line III-III of there fig. 1.
The gear change mechanism shown allows three speeds and belongs to the type mentioned above in which the pawls of each pair are embedded in the motor shaft and arranged on the same axis also embedded in a groove.

longitudinal of said tree. One of the pawls cooperates with a pinion mounted idle on the shaft while the other pawl is in contact with a switching disc which, during back-pedaling for example causing the motor shaft to rotate backwards, causes the pawls. 'One after the other in and out of gear with the shift wheels. Everything is arranged in such a way that starting from any speed one can put into action the next speed by turning the motor shaft through a certain angle first once backwards, then forwards.
The mechanism will be described below only insofar as it is necessary to understand its operation.
The pedals 1 are integral with the motor shaft 2 which carries, idlers, the pinions 3, 4 and 5. These pinions are in constant mesh with the toothed rings 6, 7 and 8 of the toothed wheel 9. This wheel is mounted by a roller bearing 10 on the countershaft 11 journalled by bearings 12,13 in the housing covers and locked in rotation by a pin 15. The two bearings 10 are kept at the desired distance by a sleeve 30. Washers 31, at the end of the shaft, ensure the axial position of the roller bearings 10 and of the wheel 9. These washers are themselves held by said spring 33 engaged in annular grooves 32. The hub 16 of the pinion 5 on which the chain wheel 17 is keyed is rotatably supported in the housing 14 by the roller bearing 18.
The inner raceway of this bearing is formed by the hub itself, while the outer race 19 is housed in a coating 20 of the housing. The hub 16 is pressed axially against the ring 19, that is to say the housing, by means of the thrust ball 21. The motor shaft 2 is also journaled in roller bearings first in the hub 16 where the roller bearing 22 is located, the motor shaft of which forms the inner raceway and the hub the outer raceway and then by a roller bearing 23 supported by the fitting 24 which forms the raceway outer bearing of the bearing 23. The inner race of this bearing is formed by a ring 27 integral with the shaft 2. The ring 28 is a support member interposed between the ring 28 and the connector 24.
The ball bearing 21 is necessary if one wants to obtain a free operation of the mechanism because the roller bearings 18 and 22 have no lateral support to receive the thrusts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
axial.
Since the roller bearings must have a certain axial play, the tensile force of the chain on the wheel 17 has the effect of tilting the driven member, the hub 16 tends to give the wheel 5 a position inclined with respect to the axis of the shaft 2. This results in an unevenly distributed load on the thrust ball 21. The purpose of the special arrangement of the roller bearings described and shown is to prevent this tilting and to distribute the efforts. With this intention, the distance between the end end faces of the rollers of the bearing 22, i.e. the length L and the length 1 of the rolls of the bearing 18 have been taken as large as possible.
To make the rollers of the bearing 18 touch their entire length, their unwinding paths are interrupted in their middle by an annular groove 70. To obtain the most favorable conditions for preventing the tilting mentioned above, the proportion between the length and diameter d of the shaft 2 is preferably 1, 1 and that between the lengths L and 1, at most 2.8.
Several roller bearings 22 could be provided instead of the two which are shown. Despite this, the length 1 remains the distance from the outer faces of the rollers of the two outer bearings and even then the given values of the proportions μ and are to be recommended even in the event that several bearings 18 have been provided. Length 1 will then be the distance from the outer faces of the outer roller bearings.
The bearing rollers are provided with journals 71 which rotate with a great deal of play in the holes 72 of the cages 73. Thus the roller bearings form a compact whole which will greatly facilitate assembly. The pins 34, 35, 36 are embedded in longitudinal grooves 62 of the shaft 2 and are held there directly in any way, for example by parts integral with this shaft. Each of said pins carries two pawls 37a, 37b, 38a, 38b, 39a, 39b. the pawls b are all arranged in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 2, while the pawl 37a is within reach of the wheel 3, the pawl 38a of the wheel 4 and the pawl 39a of the wheel 5. The motor shaft 2 has recesses 40 into which the pawls can penetrate.
The pawls a can alternately come into engagement and out of engagement with the pinions 3, 4 and 5 ot thus cause by the intermediary of the wheels 3, 4 and 5 and the toothed rings 6, 7 and 8 of the different gear ratios
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
between the shaft 2 and the chain wheel 17. The hubs of the wheels 3 and 4 have for this purpose notches 41,42 in which the pawls 37a and 38a can enter to engage these wheels 3 and 4.
The notches 43 of the wheel 5 are not however cut directly in its hub, but in a casing 44 of said hub.
Coil springs 54 act on the pawls b and tend to make them come out of their recesses 40 within reach of the pawls b a switching disc 49 is secured axially on the shaft 2 by a spring ring 61 and has an arcuate recess 50 which is lost altogether in the bore of the disc 49 and forms a step 51 at the other end. The recess 50 allows the pawls b to protrude when they are opposite the recess 40.
The switching disc 49 has two toothed rings 49a and 49b arranged in two different planes and with their teeth directed in the opposite direction. A retaining disc 52 is integral with the countershaft 11; it carries a stop pawl 53 and can be rotated until it makes contact with the stops 54. The retaining disc carries a tooth 55 cooperating with the tooth 49b of the switching disc 49. In addition, the retaining disc retainer 52 has a cam 56 which cooperates with a spring lever 57. Retainer disk 52 in combination with the switching disk is for controlling the switching of the gear change device.
For the rest, the operation of the device is known and does not need to be explained.
