Or, la demanderesse a trouvé qu'on peut également, avec les alliages de magnésium, réaliser la réduction de grosseur du grain, effectuée jusqu'ici par surchauffe, de façon bien plus simple et plus efficace eh introduisant, de préférence à des temperatures de 740 à 780 C., dans le mé- tal liquide épuré, du chlorure ferrique, en laissant ensuite reposer la masse fondue pendant un certain temps, saprès quoi on porte le métal liquide à la température de coulée néces- saire dans chaque cas et on le coule;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Exemple 1 :
On coule en éprouvettes de 20 mm. de diamètre (moulage au sble) une masse fondue de 40 kg. d'un alliage de magnésium à 8,5 % d'aluminium et 0,5 % de zinc, qui a été dé- barrassée des oxydes et d'autres impuretés par brassage répété à la température de 7400 C. avec un mélange de sels constitué par du chlorure de magnésium et des matières'additionnelles agissant cornue épaississante (voir "Werkstoffhandbuch Nicht- eisenmetalle", édité par l'Association allemande des Ingé- nieurs métallurgistes (fascicule K3 (1927) ), cette coulée étant effectuée! a) à une température de 740 C; b après surchauffe à 9000 C et refroidissement à 740 C; c) après introduction de 0,5 % de chlorure ferrique à 760 C, suivie d'un temps de repos d'environ 10 minutes à 740 c;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Process to make the texture of magnesium and its alloys finer.
The strength properties of magnesium alloys depend to a great extent, as for many other alloys, on the grain size of the casting. According to a known process, a fine-grained texture is obtained by heating the magnesium alloys to temperatures equal to or greater than 850, after the usual refining treatment with molten salts consisting of mixtures of magnesium chloride with additional materials acting as thickening agents, for example with magnesia or calcium fluoride, then 0

rant the casting after cooling to the temperatures required in each case.
However, the Applicant has found that it is also possible, with magnesium alloys, to carry out the reduction in grain size, carried out hitherto by overheating, in a much simpler and more efficient manner by introducing, preferably at temperatures of 740 to 780 C., in the purified liquid metal, ferric chloride, then allowing the melt to stand for a certain time, after which the liquid metal is brought to the casting temperature required in each case and the flow;
It is advantageous to distribute the ferric chloride in the melt, from the inside to the outside, which can be done by introducing it by means of a plunger bell.
The amount of ferric chloride required to achieve fine texture granulation depends, to a certain extent, on the composition of the alloy to be cast; however, it is preferably less than 1% by weight (based on the total weight of the melt) and generally does not exceed 2.5%.
By virtue of the process which is the subject of the present invention, which can advantageously be applied both to pots with a capacity of 30 to 50 kg., Such as those used for casting in molds and to crucibles. up to 2 tonnes capacity, long-term overheating is avoided at temperatures up to 950 C. Not only is considerable time saved, but the heat required for the overheating is avoided as well. that the considerable wear of crucibles caused by the high superheating temperatures.
Without this implying a limitation of the invention, two embodiments of the process which is the subject of the invention will be described in what follows.

d) after introduction of 0.9% ferric chloride at 760 C, followed by a standing time of about 10 minutes at 740 C.

Example 2: 2 tonnes of three different magnesium alloys are cast in pigs, these alloys being respectively:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a) 6% aluminum and 3% zinc; b) 4% aluminum and 3% zinc; c) 8.5% aluminum and 0.5% zinc, in one case without, and in another case with, treatment with about 0.4% ferric chloride, without overheating and after allowing to stand for 1 /2 hours. While in the first case, that is to say without treatment, the metal of the pigs has a coarse grain, it has, after treatment with ferric chloride, a fine-grained texture.
In order to purify magnesium and its alloys and recover the magnesium in the waste, it has already been proposed to melt the raw materials with iron chloride or mixtures of iron chloride and zinc chloride, a magnesium halide which can be used. furthermore be present in both cases.
It was stated that in cases where for this known scrubbing treatment iron chloride alone was considered for the smelting, it was advantageous to use ferrous chloride.
It has been found that when only ferric chloride is used for smelting and stripping, a fine texture of the casting is obtained only by using such quantities of ferric chloride as on the one hand, thick fumes are formed, which are unbearable for practical use and on the other hand, the molten masee necessarily absorbs iron, which is undesirable and harmful from the point of view of the resistance of the alloy. corrosion.
