<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Gas or vapor filled discharge vessel, in particular mercury vapor rectifier".
The invention relates to a discharge vessel filled with gas or vapor, in particular a mercury vapor rectifier with a heated anode chamber. It has been found that the safety against reignition of an electric discharge device can be improved by heating the anode chamber. Consequently, in several types of tank it has been placed outside. from the anode arm a heating winding, for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in which the region of the anode is brought to a higher temperature. To enhance the heating action and increase the resulting economy, it has also already been proposed to dispose the heating coil inside on the anode.
But this arrangement requires the use of an isolation transformer for each heating winding.
However, the invention relates to a more advantageous arrangement of the heating of the anode and consists in that the heating element of each anode is placed inside the vacuum-tight vessel without contact with the anode. so that it radiantly heats a large portion of the anode surface.
The idea of the invention can be practically exploited in different ways. The different arrangements which can be used on the basis of the invention and their advantages are de- fined with the help of the figures below:
In figure 1, l designates a metal anode arm, 3 the anode, 3 designates a recess made in the anode head, and into which the heating coil 4 enters. The heating coil is connected by a blade. to the wall of the tank, and isolated by the other p8le, it is introduced by the cover of the node arm. The heating coil 4 is thus at the potential of the tank and is not in contact with the anode head. Consequently, there is no need in this case to have an isolation transformer.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the winding 4 must be thus constituted, and that the heating voltage must be so chosen that no transverse discharge can form in the region of the steam pressures existing in operation in the arm d. 'anode between the different parts of the heating coil. The heat supplied by the heating coil 4 is almost entirely absorbed by the anode head and the heat loss is very small. This is successful, with a simple arrangement and with heating voltages between
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
3 to 6 volts, with little energy expenditure, to bring the anode head to the temperature, generally required, of about 2000 C to 300 C.
Instead of providing the back of the anode head with a recess, it suffices, according to figure 2, to turn a recess 5 on the anode head 7, and to arrange the heating element preferably in the form of a flat ribbon 6 around the open part of the head. The heating voltage can be chosen very small. The heat radiated by the flat conductor 6 immediately reaches a large area of the anode head 1 and heats it up. This arrangement also ensures good heat saving. It is also of a simple construction, because the heating tape 6 can only be insulated at a few points relative to the cover, or even be maintained without insulation thanks to a judicious symmetrical arrangement of the current supply points.
Figure 3 shows an arrangement similar to the construction according to figure 2. In this arrangement, the rear face 8 of the anode 9 is heated by a flat heating coil 10. A screen 11 prevents radiation in the opposite direction. . Also in this embodiment, the heating coil is not in contact with the anode head, so that the use of an isolation transformer is unnecessary.
In all cases, the distances between the heating winding and the parts of the anode head must be chosen small enough so that, owing to the discomfort brought on by the unloading, no un- arc between the anode head and the heating coil,
If one wishes to use higher heating voltages, then it is recommendable to choose an arrangement according to figure 4. In this part of the anode cover 12 forms an annular pocket penetrating into the chamber. anode chamber
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and engaged in a groove 13 of the anode. The distances between the part 15 of the cover and the anode 14 must again be chosen so as to prevent discharge.
The heating coil 16 is disposed inside the annular pocket 15 of the cover. It can be supplied with any voltage, because the danger of forming a transverse arc no longer exists.
