<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Compound bearing"
To reduce material costs, the bearings were not constructed either. solid slip material, but use has been made in their construction of an outer casing which is fitted inside with a thin layer or liner of pad slip material. The method of construction of such compound bearings varied.
Regardless of this method of manufacture, these compcsés bearings had the defect of the danger that both kinds? metals did not adhere firmly enough in their assembly plane, so that the inner cylinder, made of bearing material, began to rotate together in the direction of the ar- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
bre rotating, which quickly led to binding of the bearing.
The reason for this phenomenon lies primarily in the difference in the coefficients of heat expansion of the bearing material on the one hand and the material of the bearing shell, usually molten steel, on the one hand. on the other hand, materials whose coefficients of expansion are roughly in the ratio of 2: 1. The bearing material therefore expands, when heating the bearing, twice as strongly as the material of the outer shell. The bearing material is therefore crushed when the bearing heats up. When the bearing cools down during service interruptions. , the pad material shrinks twice as strongly as the shell material.
This results in a very small gap in the repair plane which, however, is sufficient for oil, especially hot oil, to enter this gap, since the bearings usually rotate completely in oil. As a result, the danger of detachment in the separation plane is further particularly favored, and, in this way, the bearings equipped with assembly bush liner present less safety in operation.
In accordance with the invention, this disadvantage of .3 compound bearings is eliminated by the fact that the bearing material is prevented from rotating relative to the material of the casing by mutual interengagement in the form of grooves in the repair plane. This preventive means against rotation also acts in a sufficiently effective manner, in particular, when a small intermediate space is formed in the separation plane as a result of different expansion coefficients and when oil has entered this space.

In the new composite bearing it is not necessary for these grooves to extend over the entire periphery of the partition surface. Rather, sufficient security is achieved with regard to the occurrence of the disadvantage stated above by the use of approximately 4 to 6 grooves in the form of grooves. In bearings with lubricating grooves, it therefore suffices in an advantageous manner. Non-application of retaining grooves in the separation surface, which are directed radially on the lubrication grooves.
The production of such compound bearings does not present any increase in manufacturing costs, as it suffices to make use of during the stretching of the casing tube and last drawing mcndriîi, entire surface, it in the / The passes of a surface drawing mandrel have corresponding ridges, after which the application of the bearing material can be accomplished by any method.
This interengagement of the two materials in the form of grooves and ribs in the partition surface not only provides a security against the mutual rotation of the elements, but also a certain increase in the security with regard to an opposing sliding of the elements. axial direction. According to the invention, this latter effect is advantageously avoided, in a complete and particularly simple manner, by appropriate inequalities arranged in the form of rings, and, in order to reduce the manufacturing costs as low as possible, it will be done. use of terminal clamps.
In a more extended embodiment of this idea, the clamping operation can be applied even for the construction of collared bearings, in which the bearing material is externally to the front bearing surface, so only in this case. the two metals present

Figs. 1 and 2 are a vertical section and a longitudinal section through a particularly simple basic form of the compound bearing and which has a separating surface directed in a zigzag way as a result of longitudinal grooving. Fig. 3 shows a perpendicular section through a composite bearing, in which there are provided retaining grooves adjusted radially facing the lubrication grooves already present,

Fig. 5 shows a collar bearing produced by the clamping operation, in which the bearing material is present externally to the front bearing surface.
In all the figures the bearing shell is designated by m and it is made uniformly of the same material which is generally molten steel; the inner layer, made of pad material, is denoted by 1 and the area of separation between the two materials is denoted by t. In fig.l, r denotes the zigzag shape of the separation surface t, which results from the presence of the grooves.
In Fig. 3 the lubrication grooves are denoted by 0- and the retaining grooves fitted radially on them are denoted by h.
