<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig.l est une vue en élévation latérale partie en coupe, du mélangeur; fig.2 est une vue en coupe du mélangeu , pratiquée sensiblement suivant 2-2 de la fig.1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

FLUID MIXER, ESPECIALLY FOR MOTOR VEHICLES
POWERED BY GAZOGEN.
The invention relates to the production of mixtures of fluids, and relates in particular to the production of gas and air mixtures in motor vehicles supplied by gasoline generators.
It is known that in such a case starting the engine on gas often presents difficulties, and that it is in principle desirable to be able to start with gasoline.
On the other hand, in operation with gasifier gas, the composition of the mixture must be modified, either in relation to the engine speed, or in relation to the composition of the gas.
Achieving adequate mixtures is not easy and moreover requires on the part of the driver attention and knowledge which are not frequently encountered.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is a mixer which makes it possible to start either with gasoline or with gas and which, when operating with gas, automatically provides correct mixtures of air and gas.
To this end, according to the invention, action is taken on the admission to the mixture of one of the fluids, in particular air, on the one hand by means of a shutter member which is manually controlled and of on the other hand by means of a shutter member in relation to the engine speed, by the suction depression of the latter, advantageously by means of a piston or diaphragm servo-motor, or the equivalent .
Preferably, the shut-off members are established in the form of movable plates which are circularly disposed in juxtaposition and pierced with corresponding openings which cooperate with those of a fixed member serving as a guide for the plates.
And so that the invention can be clearly understood, it will be described below in more detail with reference to the appended drawing, relating to one of its embodiments and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of the mixer; Fig.2 is a sectional view of the mixer, taken substantially along 2-2 of Fig.1;
Fig. 3 shows, partly in section, the detail of the servomotor.
Referring to the drawing, 1 denotes a section of the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine not shown, normally supplied by a gasifier which has not been shown either, the pipe 1 possibly comprising a appropriate location of its portion la a connection to which is mounted a carburetor of any known type.
The pipe 1 has an annular widening at 2, terminating in a wall 2a, the outer face of which is erect and which is pierced with openings 3 arranged circularly in any suitable distribution, for example regularly,
On the upright face of the wall 2 is arranged a circularly movable plate 4, pierced with openings 4a corresponding to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
openings 3 and provided with an extension 4b in the form of a lever, to which is connected on the one hand a control controlled by the driver, such as a flexible control or pull tab 40 and on the other hand a return spring, in an arrangement such as 'at rest the plate 4 occupies a position for which the openings 3 and 4a coincide, while by pulling the pull tab, the openings 3 can be partially or totally closed.
The plate 4 is juxtaposed a circularly movable plate 5, also provided with openings Sa corresponding to the openings 3, and provided with an extension in the form of a lever 5.:!?, This dish, water being elastically returned to the position of coincidence of the openings 3 and 5a, for example by springs hooked to the end of the lever 5b and arranged in opposition on either side of the latter.
To the lever 5b, and .for example at its end, is assembled the end of a lever '6, articulated at 7 on a bracket fixed on or coming from cast iron with the pipe 1, and the other end of which is connected , at 8, to the rod 9 of a piston 11 sliding in a cylinder 10.
This cylinder has a dead space in the form of a suction chamber, 13, to which sA, connects a duct 14 opening into the intake manifold 1.
On the other hand, the piston Il is urged to move away from the chamber 13 by any return member, advantageously a spring 12 mounted between the end of a posterior extension of the piston rod 9 and a fixed plate 10a. at the end of cylinder 10, the tension of said spring being adjustable by means of a nut 16.
The servomotor can occupy any fixed location, but it is preferably mounted on the pipe 1, by a suitable base and suitable fixing members.
Furthermore, the intake manifold is fitted with an intake butterfly 16 in the usual manner.
The things being thus arranged, the operation of the device is understood as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Starting from the position of the components shown in fig.l, assuming that it is desired to start, - with petrol or gas - starting for which a very rich mixture is essential, the driver exerts a pull on the zipper, such that it closes, by the plate 4, to the desired extent, the openings 3. With the engine started, it releases the zipper, with the result that the plate 4 is brought back to the open position complete openings 3 by the associated return spring.
Air is thus admitted into the pipe 1 through the openings 3 and 4a, but on the other hand, depending on the depression which prevails in this pipe, and the adjustment allowed for the spring 12, the piston 11 comes to occupy in its cylinder a position in relation to this depression, and which disposes the plate 5 so that the openings 5a coincide to the desired extent with the openings 3, thus allowing the passage of a determined quantity of air.
The intake butterfly valve 16 being more widely open, the engine takes its speed, increases the depression in the pipe 1, and also in the chamber 13, which has the effect of moving the piston 11 towards this chamber against the action of the spring 12 and consequently to move the plate 5 so as to reduce the coincidence of the openings 3 and Sa and to slow down the passage of air.
A richer mixture is thus produced, with an increase in engine power.
If, however, the blocking of the openings 3 by the plate 5 became too large, the mixture would be poorly proportioned, with the consequence of a reduction in power and a drop in the vacuum in the pipe 1. Consequently, the action of the spring 12 becomes predominant for bringing the piston 11 back and moving the plate 5 in the direction of an increase in the air passage openings which brings the mixture back to the correct composition.
If the start was made with gasoline, it goes without saying that the few maneuvers necessary are carried out by the driver to admit gasoline to the carburettor, ensure communication of the connection on which this carburettor is fitted with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the tubing 1, and the engine started, cut off the gasoline supply, etc., these clastioques maneuvers can be controlled if necessary by the movements of the zipper.
It also goes without saying that the embodiment more especially shown and described, one could make modifications or substitute an equivalent, without departing from the limits of the invention.
