Bien que la présente invention se soit révélée comme particulièrement convenable dans la préparation; des fibres du. bananier textile pour leur vente à-l'état de chanvre de Manille, le procédé et l'appareil qui en font l'objet con- viennent également pour le traitement de fibres analogues présentes dans d'autres types de matières végétales, par exemple le sisal; la ramie et le maguey, et;
d'une façon géné-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Saleeby, Manille, Bureau- of Printing, 1930.
A l'heure actuelle
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Ce guide hélico-spiroïdal 35 contribue à rabattre progressivement
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
fig. 6..
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>

PROCEDA AND! APPARATUS-; FOR CLEANING: FIBERS.
The present invention relates to a process for the commercial preparation of long vegetable fibers, and more particularly for ridding the desired fibers of pulpy and other included materials. in the natural constituents of a body of raw plant material containing the desired fibers, as well as to an apparatus for carrying out this cleaning operation.
Although the present invention has been found to be particularly suitable in the preparation; fibers of. textile banana tree for sale as Manila hemp, the method and apparatus used therein is also suitable for the treatment of like fibers present in other types of plant material, for example sisal; ramie and maguey, and;
in a general way
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rale for the treatment of fibers of the species of those which are found in the leaves or, natural stems in substantially parallel filaments and which are commonly designated under the name of fibro-vascular bundle, each being composed of distinct fibrous cells which overlap each other at their ends to form together a fiber of considerable length.
One of the well-known fibers of this species is Manila hemp, which is obtained from the stems of the abaca plant, which is widely cultivated in the Philippines. The nature of abaca and how the fibers are there distributed are well known to competent technicians, and reference may be made to the description given in Bulletin No. 1 of the "Fiber Standardization Board of the Department of Agriculture and Natural- Re source s of the Government of the Philippine Islands, under the title "The Standard Grades of abaca", by Messrs. Saleeby, Manila, Bureau- of Printing, 1930.
The stem is botanically referred to as a "false stem" because it is simply composed, in the adult plant, of a group of t. crescent-shaped sheaths overlapping one another all around a central core. In each sheath sheet the fibers are oriented approximately parallel to each other along its outer region. The remainder of the sheath is made up of fiberless fabrics and other fine fibers which are too weak in tensile strength to meet commercial needs, all of which it is necessary to separate or free from the desired fibers in order to prepare the fibers. here for sale. This operation is known under the name of cleaning operation, and it is as it will be called in what follows.
As the quality of the fiber and therefore to a large extent its commercial value depend on the perfection of the cleaning operation, it is obvious that a method and an apparatus which would ensure uniform and perfect cleaning @ would be of inestimable value for the technique.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cleaning operations are not uniformly satisfactory, and the proportion of poor quality fibers existing only as a consequence of insufficient perfection of the cleaning operation is regarded as unnecessarily high by those interested in the prosperity of industry, and it follows that premium clam prices are also unnecessarily high.
Another method commonly used to clean the fiber of abaca involves a scraping operation performed on the outer part of the sheath sheet (, called "tuxy"). The apparatus used for this operation is a fixed block against which a rigid blade is clamped by a spring or by a weight. The outer part of the sheath is slid over the block between the latter and the edge of the blade, which produces a scraping effect. This scraping operation is satisfactory for the production of an excellent quality 11 fiber. "provided that the" tuxy "is scratched evenly, but obtaining this result depends on a constant adjustment of the apparatus which can only be achieved by sacrificing speed and which requires vigilant care on the part of the 'operator..
As the scraping operation is usually carried out in the countryside, this appliance is extremely rustic and the necessary care is more an exception than the rule. Large quantities of fibers which would be of excellent quality if they were well cleaned must, after treatment in this type of apparatus, be classified in lower categories. In addition, such an apparatus requires the preparation of a "tuxy" because it does not function properly if the sheath is kept in its full thickness.
Another form of cleaning involves threshing the sheath sheet in a mechanical beater. The use of this type of device has the insurmountable drawbacks that the latter
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tends to break long fibers from too much pressure and to leave the shorter and weaker fibers intact by joining them to the desired strong fibers even though they have not been properly cleaned from inclusion. ,, weak fibers in the product, reducing the average fiber strength, is in and of itself undesirable, and when in addition the cleaning of the fiber leaves something to be desired, the quality of the product is significantly lowered.
Consequently, the essential object of the present invention is to obtain a high yield of fiber of "excellent quality" from sheaths capable of supplying it, and this by the use of an apparatus which performs the operation of. uniformly excellent cleaning.
The invention also aims to provide an apparatus which automatically and without interruption accommodates the full thickness of the natural sheaths which are successively introduced therein.
In general, the present invention relates to the preparation by cleaning or separation of long plant fibers of the species described, by an operation consisting in subjecting the surface of a body of plant material, containing the fibers, to the impact of a current of liquid strong enough so that the fibers are completely cleaned and even, if desired, that the short, weak and unwanted fibers are completely eliminated or. torn off.
For the practice of the present invention and using a shock form of the apparatus it is no longer necessary to prepare "D-tuxies" as required beforehand by the method of cleaning by scraping, because the sheath can can be treated in a single cleaning operation in its entire natural thickness and the fibers of an entire sheath sheet can, if desired, be properly cleaned in a single operation.
Likewise, when the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cleaning is carried out in accordance with the present invention, any breakage or other deterioration of large fibers as occurs in the mechanical threshing operation is completely avoided, and proper adjustment of the apparatus eliminates. desired fibers those which are weak along with the mass of the. non-fibrous tissue.
Other features and purposes of the present invention will emerge from the following description of a preferred apparatus for carrying out the present process, in which reference will be made to the accompanying drawings in which:

As can be seen in figs. 1 to 3, the stem of the abaca comprises a series of crescent-shaped sheaths 2 nested in one another and one of which is shown in section in FIG. 3 .. The sheaths 2 are arranged, in the stem of the adult plant, around a central nucleus as shown in fig. 2.
Once the plant has been cut and the stem sectioned to a suitable predetermined length, the sheaths are separated from each other and from the pit 3 either by hand as usual or by a centrifugal mechanical operation which makes the 'subject of a request of the same request-

Each element is then flattened, preferably by passing it through a laminar train.

as shown schérùatil1uer..1ent in fig .. 4 ,. A cylinder pressure of the order of 14.0 kg / cm2 is suitable.
The cleaning operation is then carried out, in order to isolate and rid the desired fibers, which run along the naturally outer part of the element, from the pulpy and non-fibrous tissues contained in the inner region of the element. natural element ..
This cleaning operation is preferably carried out by securing at one end of the flattened member and then directing a transverse stream of water at a pressure greater than 35 kg / cm2 against an exposed surface of the. element, preferably its natural outer hard surface, and moving the current gradually and preferably evenly along that element
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and only by moving away from the immobilized end, the part of the element being acted upon being supported by a surface. support or. chicane.
So that the operation can be carried out in a continuous manner, it is preferable to advance the flattened and stored elements side by side, perpendicular to. the general direction of the fibers, at the meeting and perpendicularly to the displacement of the point of impact of a water current, this point of impact describing a: relative cyclical movement across a baffle.
We will better understand what is happening by referring to figs. 5 to 13 of. accompanying drawings .-, showing an apparatus for carrying out the method, apparatus which essentially consists of a conveyor mechanism bringing the flattened sheaths to the machine, a mechanism acting on the substance supplied, an apparatus bringing to this mechanism from water to other pressurized fluid, finally a transport mechanism to evacuate the cleaned fibers.
The feed mechanism preferably comprises a horizontal endless belt conveyor, indicated at A, for receiving flattened elements of plant material, such as. sheath bands, arranged horizontally and. if you want side by side. Conveyor A delivers the material in the direction of the arrow marked in fig. 6 so that one end of the elements passes over an auxiliary conveyor belt C while the other end, projecting beyond the edge of the conveyor A, advances between two endless chains forming a feed mechanism. friction-and indicated as a whole in B.
Conveyors B and C convey the material in the same direction and mechanism B clamps one end of the strips of material so that these are transferred from one end of the strip to the other. machine until they are cut by the action of a transverse knife at the other end of the machine ,. The cleaned substance
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is then discharged by an endless belt conveyor D, oriented perpendicular to the apparatus and supporting the cleaned fibers by their middle part when they are cut, while the ends by which they were retained are discharged at the rear end of the machine.
These feed mechanisms will be described more fully in what follows, but it will be appreciated that the ends of the strips of material opposite to those gripped by the transport mechanism B are more or less dragged through the machine. 'escape from the auxiliary conveyor belt C, they come to rest on a semi-cylindrical surface 10 formed in the frame 8 of the machine and part of which acts as a baffle.
.-The semi-cylindrical surface or baffle 10-is coaxial with a main control shaft 12: mounted for rotation in suitable bearings 13 and 14 of the frame 8. It is understood that the shaft 12-can be coupled, to the end which is seen cut off in FIG. 5, at any source, not shown, of driving force.
On the inner end of the shaft 12 is wedged a wheel E of an original configuration. Considering figs. 7, 10 and 11, this wheel comprises a hollow head 21, the outer surface of which forms part of the periphery of the wheel. This hollow head 21 has an inlet orifice 23 and, in the face 22, a narrow outlet orifice 24 oriented parallel to the axis of the shaft 12. The walls of the head, which forms a narrow passage terminating at the orifice 24 form an angle with a tangential plane at the periphery of the wheel, as seen in more detail in fig.ll.
The head 21 is removably mounted on the wheel E, which makes it possible to replace it by other heads with nozzles of different widths, or of which the passages leading to
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
at the orifice have a slightly greater or lesser obliquity, or differing both in their width and in their obliquities
Da wheel E has a peripheral part in :. cylindrical surface form 30 which extends rearwardly of socket head 21 over an angular distance of about 180. This surface 30 is offset as seen in lafig.10 so that it has a helical shape on a cylindrical surface parallel to the axis of the shaft 12 ..
This semi-cylindrical surface 30- is supported by a spoke 33 and by a semi-circular plate which occupies the remaining 180 of the wheel, both being connected to the hub of said wheel.
This wheel E is intended to rotate in the vicinity and in the transverse direction of a cylindrical baffle 10,, so as to act on the substance conveyed while the latter is driven below the wheel E and between it. ci and the baffle 10 by the conveyor mechanism B .. A. To this end, the wheel E is arranged to rotate without interruption from right to left considering FIG. 7 and consequently to move away from the feed mechanism B while it sweeps the neighboring baffle 10.
The interval between the orifice 2 and the baffle 1o is small, and this is why it is preferable to provide the wheel E ': with a feed guide 35 which forms not only a propeller but also a spiral s' extending from right to left, without considering fig. 7, over an arc of about 360. This feed guide is shown schematically in front elevation in FIG. 12, It ends at its inner end with a rod 36 oriented in the direction of the conveyor A and radially up to a point 37 concentric with the axis of the shaft 12 slightly raised relative to the plane of the conveyor belt A The point .37 therefore turns with the wheel E without however describing any peripheral movement.
It goes without saying that this rod 30 is shown broken in FIG. 10.
This helical-spiral guide 35 helps to gradually fold
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the sheet-sheath against the baffle 10. before the moment when it reaches the zone of displacement of the orifice 24, due to the fact that as the elements of material advance on the conveyor A their central part passes under the point 37, and as the wheel E is intended to rotate, without interruption, the central parts are gradually biased down towards the baffle 10 by the rod 36 and the helical-spiral guide 35 as they approach the semi-surface. circular 30 of the wheel E, since the radial distance between the guide 35 and a determined point of the baffle 10 decreases as the wheel E turns Gravity contributes, of course, to this deflection of the elements towards the baffle 10 ,
and the guide 35 can be omitted, but it is nonetheless useful to prevent the vegetable bands from being tangled by the wheel E.
As shown in Figs. 7,10 and 11, the guide 35 is split in order to allow the passage of a knife 40, permanently mounted on the head 21 This knife 40. is placed substantially at one of the ends of the orifice 24, and it cooperates with the chisel 10 to cut longitudinally in the mass of plant material at each revolution of the wheel e.
The head 21 carried by the wheel E has a series of teeth 41 oriented peripherally and projecting radially placed immediately following the orifice 24 and indicated by the parallel lines which can be seen in FIG. These detts are intended to act like a comb to progressively press the cleaned part of the fibers against the baffle d10 as the orifice passes through the material introduced.
As can be seen in fig. 11, the semi-cylindrical surface 3Q extends from a point situated immediately behind the teeth 1,
In order to prevent the material from coiling on the shaft 12 after having left the zone of action of the semi-cylindrical surface 30, a series of pegs 42 are provided which are planted in the semi-circular plate 34 and oriented axially. , pegs that are
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
intended to keep the fibers away from the wheel E until they are well outside the area it sweeps.
In order to bring the water to the orifice 24, a network of conduits is provided, as shown in the drawing, which comprises as an element the shaft 12, hollowed out for this purpose as shown in the figure 50. 10. The end of the hollow shaft 12 is connected to the. inlet connection 23 of the head 21 via a pipe 51 (figs.
5 and 7) which turns with wheel E.
Water is admitted into the hollow shaft 12 by a mount 52 (fig, 10) comprising suitable sealing boxes 53,53 through radial holes 54, 54 leading to the axial cavity. of the tree; 12.
The water is brought under pressure to the frame 52 by the pipe 55 (FIGS. 5 and 7) by suitable members such as the constant flow pump 56, shown schematically in FIG. 5 ..
In order to interrupt 1.'arrival of water at the orifice 24 at intervals determined at each revolution of the orifice, between the pump 56 and the frame 52, a valve housed in a chapel 57 has been interposed. such valve may be of any suitable type, for example of: compression spring type ,. As it has been indicated that a constant flow pump such as 56 can be used, it is necessary to provide some device to absorb the flow of the pump during the periods when the valve 57 is closed.
Although the question can be solved by diverting the flow towards a pipe mounted in, bypass on the pump or discharging outside, it has been found suitable, for reasons of economy, to interpose an accumulator between the pump 56 and the valve 57. This accumulator has been shown in the drawings in the form of a pair of air chambers 58 suitably communicating at their top, as shown in FIG. 5, with a network of compressed air (not shown) via a line 59, and the valve 60.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
The valve 57 is constructed in such a way that it opens and closes automatically. Referring to fig. 9, this valve is actuated by a rod 61 which rises and falls under the action of a cam 6.2 mounted on a shaft 63 and acting on a cam roller 64 mounted on the rod 61.
The shaft 63 is mounted on the frame 8 of the machine in a suitable bearing 66 (fig. 5), it being understood that when the cam 62 is in the position shown in fig. 9 the valve 57 is closed. As will be discussed in the following, the decay mechanism controlling the valve is studied so that it produces the opening of the latter during the fraction of each revolution of the wheel E during which the valve opens. 'orifice 24 sweeps the baffle 10 away from the supply mechanism B.
In order to keep the water which escapes from the orifice 24 against the baffle 10, it is possible to mount, in front of the impeller E, a suitable casing 68 intended to direct the water towards a discharge pipe while it goes back along chicane 10.
Returning to the conveyor mechanisms, the feed conveyor A is of the conventional endless belt type and comprises two or more such belts passing around a roller 70 wedged on a shaft 71 mounted in bearings housed in a support 72 integral with the frame. 8 and in the latter itself.
The endless belts of the conveyor A are shown to be two in number and are spaced from one another in order to allow the passage of the auxiliary conveyor belt G around the roller 70. As can be seen in FIG. 5, the belt / conveyor 0. passes through the casing 68 and the machine frame to end in the deflection pulley 73 mounted on the frame 8.
The feed mechanism B comprises two endless articulated devices respectively mounted on the pulleys 84,
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
85 and 86 ,. 87As seen in fig. 13, each link of the upper chain has a protruding part with a V-section, and each link of the lower chain has a corresponding V-shaped depression. The links of each chain are assembled by pins 88.
The chains are mounted on the pulleys. 84, 85, 86 and 87 with a view to passing around, in circumferential grooves of these pulleys, depressions being provided in the lateral flanges of these pulleys to receive the pins 88. The upper chain is supported. to its return leg by support rollers 89 ..
So that the links of the two chains are kept in solid mesh during their movement in the direction of the advance of the material, the frame of the machine is provided with a series of fixed rollers 76, one of which is visible in the part broken away from the frame that can be seen in fig. 6 ,. These 70 rollers are idle and placed immediately below the upper strand of the lower chain .. Each of. rollers 76 cooperates with; a roller 77 mounted above it to slide vertically on a pin 78, and a spring 79; solicits it down.
The roller 77 is positioned so that it continuously presses the upper chain of the feed mechanism B unlike the reaction of the roller 76 situated below. The rows of rollers 77 and 76 are staggered at small intervals throughout. parts where the two chains act together in their path.
The conveyor mechanism D is a simple cable conveyor oriented in the transverse direction of the machine. It has been shown schematically in figs. 5 and 6 as passing around six pulleys suitably mounted at appropriate locations. properties. Four of these pulleys are shown at 90, 91, 92 and 93 in fig. 5, and a fifth pulley is shown at 94 on the figure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
fig. 6 .. As for the sixth pulley, it is hidden below the pulley 90 in fig. 5.
To drive the conveyors A, B and C, the wheel E, and actuate the valve 57, all in kinematic connection, mechanisms are all controlled by the main shaft 12. For this purpose, the latter is provided with a toothed wheel 100. ($ pinion (freeze .. 5 and 8) connected, by a suitable reduction gear comprising the 101 and endless screws enclosed in the housing 102, to the hard shaft 103 which the pulley 87 is mounted, so as to drive the lower endless chain of the feeding mechanism B.
The upper chain of the feeder mechanism B is driven by a shaft 104 on which the pulley 85 is mounted, the shaft 104 being connected to the shaft 103 by means of suitable sprockets 105 and 106.
Transporters A and C are driven from feed mechanism B, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, by the shaft 71 on which the roller 70 is mounted.
The shaft 71 is in a control connection with a shaft 107, on which the pulley 86 is mounted via the pinions 108, 109 and 110.
The shaft 63 of the valve mechanism 57 is actuated by the shaft 12 by means of a pinion 111 which meshes with the toothed wheel 100- mounted on the shaft 12.
As for the conveyor mechanism D, it can also be actuated from the shaft 12 by a belt 112 acting on a pulley 113, wedged on a shaft 114 which also carries the pulley 91 actuating the cable conveyor.
The construction shown in the drawings has been employed to operate in combination with a constant flow pump 56 capable of supplying water through the piping system to port 24 at a pressure of 175 kg / cm2. The accumulators are pre-charged with air under
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
a pressure of about 35 kg / cm2 and are proportioned so that during the half-cycle of machine operation in which the valve 57 is closed, the pump returns water to the pipes. chambers under a pressure of about 175 kg / cm2.
He. It is possible to perfectly clean the flattened elementary sheaths of the abaca in a single pass through the machine which has just been described, provided that the water reaches the orifice 24 under a load of 175 kg / cm2.
In a wheel E. comprising an orifice which. describes a trajeo-. t-oire of about 1.10 m .. this orifice was given an axial length of 15 cm and a width of about 0.25 mm. Port 24 is about 0.8mm from baffle 10, and the semi-cylindrical surface about 12mm. of this same baffle. Gum fibers generally have a. diameter between 0.05 and 0.25 mm .. it can be seen that they do not undergo any scratching effect from the orifice ..
The chicane forms an arc of about 1.5 m. development, so that the length of material cleaned in a single revolution is about 1.5 m. The pitch of this baffle is about 76 mm in 180, and the feed mechanism a'-with shaft 12 has a transmission ratio such that said mechanism advances by about 15 cm. at each revolution of the shaft, 12. It follows that in the successive cycles of the operation of the machine, each cycle representing a revolution of the shaft 12, the chain advances by a distance equal to the length of the orifice 24.
A. provided that the retaining elements of the slimming mechanism B continuously tighten the ends of the vegetal strips, the knife 40- and the orifice 24 operate successively and without interruption on the widths of the strips: wide vegetation. of 15 cm. each of these widths of 15 cm. occupying air- beginning of each cycle the same position along the length of the machine.
The semi-circular shape of the semi-cylindrical surface 30. has the effect of keeping pressed against the baffle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
the part of such or such width of plant material which undergoes the treatment despite its uninterrupted progression under the action of the feed mechanism B during the movement of the orifice 24, with an amplitude of 180, across the baffle 10 from of the feeding mechanism B.
Satisfactory operation of the apparatus described has been obtained by rotating the shaft 12 at a uniform speed of 48 revolutions per minute. It follows that the chains of the feeder mechanism B, move at a rate of b m.- per minute, and the control of the transport mechanisms A and C is adjusted in order to obtain substantially equal feed speeds. .
shaft b3 which actuates the valve 57 rotates in synchronism with the shaft 12 and, consequently, opens and closes this valve 57 once for each revolution of the wheel E. The cam 62 is wedged on the shaft 63 so that the valve opens when the orifice 24 is at the point of its path closest to the feed mechanism B, and it allows the spring 65 to close the valve 57 substantially half a cycle after the wheel E, has swept a sector of 180, while the orifice 24 is at the point of its revolution furthest from the feed mechanism B.
Considering the construction of the orifice 24 as shown in FIG. 11, the walls of this orifice have an obliquity such that the water is directed onto the baffle 10 away from the feed mechanism B. This obliquity, which by'abbreviation will be called the incidence of the jet of water on the baffle, is approximately 20, that is, the walls of orifice 24 are at an angle of approximately 20 with a tangential plane, to the surface of the baffle.
Considering that with a pressure of 175 kg / cm2 and an orifice having the dimensions previously indicated, the stream of water escapes from the orifice 24 at a speed of approximately 180m / sec-,

one can easily imagine that this current of water acts in a way like a rigid transverse blade which passes through the tongue of plant material. However, this liquid blade not being effectively rigid, its impact plane varies according to the configuration of the surface of the material on which it acts, and therefore it does not break the relatively large fibers.
The static and kinetic load being about 175 kg / cm2 and the so-called angle of incidence being 200 ', the impact effect is 350 kg / cm2 and the normal component of this impact force on the body. substance in tabs is about 85 kg / cm2. It should be considered that this normal component of the impact force is perfectly sufficient to completely clean the abaca sheaths in a single pass through the apparatus.
Like the static charge pressure, the dimensions of the orifice 24 and the angle of incidence of the current are variables which can be changed, the pressures and dimensions given here are only intended for use. example. However, in order to achieve adequate cleaning, the normal component of impact force on the material being treated must be somewhat greater than 70 kg. Suitable limits of the kinetic load 108 and 210 may be given. . ' kg / cm2, and the normal component of the impact force on the elementary sheath 70 and 140 kg / cm2. Depending on the particular pressure used, the relatively weak fibers will be more or less broken by the impact and carried away by the water along with the remaining pulpy substance.
As explained previously, after the abaca stems have been cut and the leaves and branches removed, the stem is preferably cut to a determined length and the elementary sheaths are then separated from each other. as well as the core of the stem if it is an adult plant. As we have also said, we will then pass them. elementary ducts through a rolling mill in order to flatten each element.

The elements are then layered side by side on the conveyor A, one of their ends projecting the edge of the conveyor so as to pass between the converging links of the conveyor B. It is preferable that the hard surface normally located at the bottom. The exterior of these elements is turned upwards so that it presents itself to the stream of water spurting out of the orifice 24. The elements can be placed side by side following each other and be introduced without interruption into the opening. the machine.
The instant each element passes around the roller 70 its end is pinched by the wedging feed mechanism B. Its central part then falls from the conveyor A and the free end of the element continues to be conveyed by. the auxiliary transporter C.-
The central part of the vegetable tongue bends towards the cylindrical baffle 10 or until its contact and, as the feeder mechanism B continues to advance, the tongue is gradually dragged out of the conveyor d and brought into the swept area in its rotation by the wheel E ,, to approach more and more the baffle 10 and take a semi-circular shape under the action of the guide 35.
As soon as part of the vegetal tongue reaches the trajectory described by the knife 40 in its rotation, said knife, in combination with the baffle 10, cuts in the tongue a longitudinal slice on which the jet coming from the orifice 24 acts. at the same time that the cutting of the material slice takes place and that the half-cycle lasts during which the part of the wheel E which carries the nozzle traverses the lower half of its revolution and crosses the baffle 10 in s 'moving away the feeder mechanism B.
At the moment when the orifice has completed its 1800 rotation, the suupape 57 closes, interrupting the water supply, and the wheel E continues to rotate so as to bring the knife 40 and the orifice 24, in the upper half of its rotation, at its point closest to the feeder mechanism B. At this

moment the latter has progressed by about 15 cm, so that a new slice of 15 cm. width is cut by the knife 40, and that the orifice 24 acts in the same way on this second slice of material.
The first slice continues to be driven out of the path described by the wheel E until the end by which it is pinched reaches the knife 120, shown schematically in the freeze. 5 and which can be a rotating knife, a shears or any other suitable device either ordered separately or connected to the main drive shaft 12. This cutting tool acts to separate from the pinched end by the feeding mechanism B the part of the plant element which has been cleaned.
As the free end of this element has been dragged by the conveyor mechanism B, the cleaned element, the instant it reaches the knife. 120., is oriented more or less across the machine, its central part wrapping around the rope conveyor D- As soon as the large, pinched and uncleaned end has been separated from the treated fibers these are found ' released s, from. so that the cable conveyor drives them by friction towards the rear side of the device.
The trapped and untreated ends are released by the conveyor mechanism B at the instant when the two chains separate from each other at the end of the machine.
