<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Gasifier.
The present invention relates to a gasifier producing {lean gas, gas. air and gas to water, capable of constituting a fuel for all types of internal combustion engines and especially for motor vehicle engines.
The improved gasifier according to the invention, of the portable type, is specially characterized by the application of a special device for cooling the air injection nozzle and the use of water vapor and volatile gas, accumulated in the coal reserve, to enrich the gas produced by the gasifier.
- The main characteristics of the new gasifier can be stated as follows:
In the hearth of the gasifier, there is placed a porous refractory block, which is suitably moistened with water from
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
water compartments contiguous to the aroi of the gasifier, this water infiltrating the material of the refractory block in order to provide useful reactions therein, in particular for converting a quantity of CO2 into CO. to achieve such reactions by con
2 -tact, the invention provides for increasing the path of the CO2 gas formed in line with the nozzle as far as the outlet grid, so that this CO2 encounters an excess of carbon which makes it possible to reduce the CO2 to CO.
According to the invention, the nozzle will be protected by water cooling, also supplied from a water reserve and by a metal grid situated at a suitable distance in front of the nozzle, and which, it also, can have refrigeration water circulation.
2.- Water or water vapor, possibly water vapor saturated with sodium carbonate or potash and fine by capillary action through the refraotary block, enriches the gas, produced at the nozzle, in hydrogen and in oxygen. The water compartments advantageously cool the heating surface and thus protect the walls of the gasifier, the nozzle and the gas outlet grid.
3.- The water vapor thus brought into the gasifier, as well as that produced by the combustion and the relative heating of the coal reserve accumulate at the top of the gasifier at the same time as the volatile hydrocarbons and, according to the invention, this vapor and these gases will be brought either to a humidifier filter, which purifies this gas and enriches it, or directly to the mixing device where the fuel mixture for the engine is formed, the said enriched gas being able to possibly replace part of the atmospheric air incorporated in the mixture.
In order to prevent the engine suction from having an influence on the quantity of vapors produced in the gasifier, provision is made in the pipe transporting these vapors. a valve device of such a composition and weight that
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the exhaust for said vapors is only authorized when the force of expansion of these vapors exceeds the force of inhalation.
4.- In order to prevent the deterioration of the air injection nozzle, a metal mesh, thorium or zirconia or other refractory material is provided at an appropriate distance from it. this fabric can be cooled by an external commuai cation with water-cooled pipes or by any other refrigerant.
5.- The gas outlet grid will be composed of hollow bars, and is capable of cooling the gas as a result of air-flow of any refrigerant through the bars.
As refrigerant means, it is possible to use liquid air in a cylinder and said outlet grille will preferably have the largest possible active surface.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below by way of example, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a schematic vertical section through the gasifier. Figure 8 is a horizontal section approximately level with the nozzle,
The gasifier comprises a casing 1, the upper part of which constitutes the coal reserve and the lower part the hearth; of coal descending along a funnel 10. arrives in the combustion chamber to form the gases CO and CO2 therein the right of the nozzle ± and in front of the refractory block 5 arranged in the middle on the bottom of the gasifier, and whose cap s' engages in the opening no 10 to ensure a controlled descent of the fuel.
The gasifier has a loading cover 2 and the usual safety valves. Water pockets 1 and 4 are for-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
mées on either side of the body 1, to constitute a reserve of cooling water. The refractory block 5 is supplied from the water tank 4 by capillary effect. The refractory and porous block may be of suitable conformation and possibly have hollow passages or cavities which create large evaporation surfaces.
6 designates a gasifier emptying door, in particular for ash removal. the nozzle 7, which has a narrow and prolonged injection slot possibly bifurcated as illustrated in fig.8, is surrounded by cana = refrigerators 8., in which water circulation can occur. In front of these refrigerator tubes 8 is a protective grid 9, arranged at a suitable distance, this grid being made of a resistant material, such as thorium or zirconia, so that the nozzle is directly protected against. excessive heat from the fireplace. This fabric 9 can be cooled by an external communication with the cooling pipes 8 ,.
This canvas 9 may optionally be adjustable, so as to be able to vary its distance from the nozzle, in accordance with the requirements imposed by the use of different fuel. The gases exit via channel 11, the mouth of which is protected by a grid made up of hollow bars, so that water circulation ensures perfect refrigeration of the gases. this grid 12 will have a conformation such that a large cooling surface is produced. The water flow, through the reservoirs and 4, will moreover be advantageously adjustable with the intervention, for example, of through valves or any other means making it possible to vary the flow of water or of another agent. refrigerant.
The duct 11 opens into a filter, preferably of the wet type, where. cleaning of the gas supplied by the gasifier may occur.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In Figure 2, we immediately realize the elongated path imposed on the CO and CO2 gases to pass from the reaction zone to the outlet grid 12. and it is in the excess carbon located on this path, that 'a considerable amount of CO2 is reduced to 00.
The water vapor formed by the block 5 as well as that resulting from the drying and relative carbonization of the fuel in the reserve compartment, as well as the volatile hydrocarbons, thus recovered, accumulate in front of the outlet port 14 which constitutes a valve seat for the conical valve 5 ', which gives passage to a tube 16 capable of bringing the vapors and gases to the filter 13, or by a bypass 17 directly to the mixing apparatus which forms the fuel for the engine. The valve 5 'operates by gravity and will only be lifted when the expansion pressure of the vapor and gas in tank 1 exceeds the engine suction force.
These vapors and volatile gases .8-. can therefore advantageously enrich the combustible mixture.
The improved gasifier according to the invention therefore has maximum output capacity and effective means for protecting the constituent materials against the effects of the excessive heat which is observed in devices of this type.
