<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The object of the present invention is an installation for supplying riohe gas to combustion engines. The installation comprises a gas generator operating according to the water process, a seo scrubber and a wet scrubber operating. using heavy oil, such as fuel oil *
To obviate the loss of engine power compared to working with gasoline, it is advisable to reduce as much as possible any resistance to the engine's suction and, for this, it is necessary to keep the hearth perfectly permeable, c 'that is to say to prevent the disintegration of the com-

The improved gas generator will therefore have, in principal order, a downward directed draft and the fuel tank will preferably be heated with the gas produced in order to remove moisture and remove moisture therefrom. prevent the pieces from bursting.
The furnace will preferably be fed from the periphery towards the interior of the apparatus, so as to replace the depleted reaction coal. The generator operates with an introduction of water vapor, which has the advantage of fixing oxygen without nitrogen and ensuring a relative cooling of the generator. The use of water entails the obligation to use a metering device regulating the quantity of water preferably transformed first into steam and admitted at the same time as the air necessary for combustion.
This water metering device / will be constructed in such a way that at idle speed the intake is automatically removed and, on the other hand, this supply increases in proportion to the engine speed, resulting in the generation of gas responds instantly and at any time to the work to be done by the engine. At idle speed, the water supply is removed mainly to keep the fireplace warm and to allow easy starting.
The water metering device will be in the form of a closed chamber divided by a diaphragm, so that one compartment can be connected to the engine's suction nozzle, while the other has an actuated needle valve. through the diaphragm, to provide passage for perfectly determined quantities of water which are brought into an compartment adjacent to the hearth where a virtually instantaneous vaporization takes place, the water vapor and air being sucked in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
from this compartment will turn an injection nozzle which enters the combustion chamber in a downward inclined direction, so as to ensure perfect combustion and the creation of a clinker easily removable by a lower cover,
The fuel tank will therefore be surrounded by a double envelope in which the gas produced circulates to ensure perfect drying of the fuel reserve. In its path, the gas meets the catalysts, in the form of bands and plates of copper, which ensure the transformation of the tars, The gas then passes through a dust scrubber operating by impact of the gas current on guide fins, this scrubber being connected to a complex of cooling tubes opening into a collector which brings the gas to a wet scrubber, where the gases are further scrubbed by surface bubbling in heavy oil, such as fuel oils
The invention will be described below.

dry scrubber, and
Figure 8 is a vertical section through the oil scrubber.
Referring to these drawings, the gas generator is made up of a cylindrical tank 1, with a loading mouth, which can be closed with a sealed cover, At the upper end of the tank .1 a gutter 3 is provided. collecting the condensation water, which can be evacuated by a tube the lower part of the reservoir 1 funnel-shaped, the opening of which can be blocked by a mushroom or valve 5., whose central rod 6 comprises, at the 'upper end, a threaded end fitted with a nut, Garou which rests on an internal cross, so as to allow the raising or lowering of the valve 5.
This conical valve 5 allows the fuel to flow towards the periphery of the outer casing 7, which surrounds the tank .1 and this casing 7 ends at the bottom slightly in a funnel, to open out into a cylindrical part 8 which effectively forms the home.
The generator therefore included the coal reserve a, the actual hearth b, and the reaction zone c. It can be seen that the furnace is supplied from the periphery, and the casing 7 extends over a sufficient height around the cylinder 1 to ensure perfect drying of the fuel reserve.
The hearth 8 is completely closed by a cover with a metal-plastic seal, with an orifice allowing the removal of the iron with a suitable tool. From the annular compartment, formed between the bodies 1 and 7, the gas passes through a duct 9 into a baffle compartment 10, from where it is led by a pipe 11 to the sea dust purifying apparatus. On leaving the reaction zone c, the gas passes along a strip of red copper 12, which surrounds the body of the tank 1.
This band of red copper,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reach to. hot by the gas, however, yields an oonsiderable quantity of heat to the coal reserve, so that the gas, on passing, undergoes a kind of condensation of the tars. The gas passing through 9 arrives in the ohioane chamber 10 whose corrugated copper plates, 13 are strongly heated due to their contact with the wall of the hearth b. There is also a definitive dissociation of the tars, ie an enrichment of the calorific value of the gas.
The combustion in the hearth is ensured by a water and air inlet which is injected by means of a nozzle 14 cooled by the circulating water of the engine which circulates in the pipe 15 of the nozzle through inlet 16 and outlet 17.
This nozzle is removable to allow cleaning, inspection and possible replacement. This nozzle is directed obliquely towards the bottom of the chamber 8, in order to ensure an effective position of the incandescent hearth and to ensure a relative cooling of the clinker formed on the bottom. The nozzle 14 passes through a vaporization compartment 18, attached to the outer wall of the hearth, so that the heat of the latter can be directly used to vaporize determined quantities of water delivered by the metering device illustrated in fig. 3.
The metering device consists of a hollow body 19, divided into two compartments by a diaphragm 20. The upper compartment has a tube 21, which is connected to the intake of the motor. In the center, a spring 22, the tension of which can be adjusted by a screw 23, acts snr the diaphragm 20 to which. there is fixed the needle 24 controlling the passage of a supply valve 25 connected to a water reserve at a higher level. The lower compartment of the hollow body 19 has an air intake port 26 to balance the pressure during
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the flow of water entering the lower compartment through the drain tube 27.
This evacuation tube 27 brings the metered quantities of water inside the evaporator oompartment 18, where said evaporation occurs instantaneously, and a mixture of steam and air is sucked from this compartment by the nozzle 14, to ensure combustion in the fireplace.
Figures 4 to 6 show the details of this evaporator apparatus.
This apparatus is constituted by a chamber of triangular vertical section, the outer wall of which has air intake orifices 28 and outlet orifices 29, on which fits a cap 30 having, in the center, an outlet tube. 31 which engages in the nozzle 14. The water instantly evaporated in the compartment 18 is sucked with a quantity of air to penetrate, through the cap 30, inside the nozzle, and the air-mixture. steam arrives, by impulse, in the combustion zone b.
The water supply is suitably dosed for an exact flow rate at each suction and this water flow rate is, on the other hand, regulated by the spring 22.
The combustion will therefore be carried out under efficient conditions and the reduction will take place in zone a on a suitably determined surface, after which the water gas obtained will undergo the two effects of catalysis on the red coppers.
12 and 13, to be brought to the dust collector, which consists of a hollow body 32 divided by a partition 33 provided with passages 34 towards dust accumulating compartments 35.
The gas entering through the connection 36 is thrown, with slight expansion, on the fins 37 located, in a suitable direction, on the partition 33, so that the dust falls to the bottom of the compartments 35, from where it is can evacuate them
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
through openings 38. In the upper region, the de-dusted gas is oolleotated into a section of cooling tube 39, opening into a common manifold 40. ' From this manifold 40, the gases pass into the oil repairer illustrated in FIG. 8 and which is constituted by a reservoir 41 with a conical bottom 42, into which the gas is fed through the conduit 43.
This funnel 42 is filled with a heavy oil, such as fuel oil. up to a level d, and a rimmed disc 44 is disposed on this liquid level, so as to force the gases to bubble on the surface under this diue to pass along the peripheral rim and to rise in the compartment 41 through a succession of filters 45 intended to retain the last dust and impurities. The gas thus purified leaves the liquid purifier through line 46 which directs it to the engine suction line. Passing under the disc 44, the gases necessarily entrain a quantity of oil which falls back inside the peripheral rim, but the disc comprises pipes 47 forming a passage towards the bottom and which therefore make it possible to return the oil entrained into the 'funnel 42.
The latter comprises a level and drain valve 48. At the lower end of the funnel 42 is provided a valve chamber 49 forming a kind of airlock allowing the evacuation of the oil laden with impurities. .
The use of an oil scrubber has the advantage that this latter material prevents rusting of the metallic parts and, moreover, this material remains non-freezing. The kind of circulation caused in the funnel, coming from the The entrained oil which returns through the tubes 47 produces an efficient deposition of the heavy material towards the manifold 49 so that the minimum resistance is maintained for the passage of the gas below the disc 44.
When the gas leaves the oil scrubber, it achieves: a very high purity while being almost completely cooled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
As a result of this installation, the supply of gas to the engine takes place under the most favorable circumstances and that the output of the generator is continuously controlled with the load of the engine, respectively its speed.
The invention can obviously undergo modifications in the structural details, without departing from the principles claimed below.
