<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to automatic switches for use in telephone and other systems.
The present invention relates to automatic switches for use in telephone systems and more particularly relates to switches which are subjected to one or more movements to take up position, movements during which the brushes do not establish contact with the switches. plots of the benches.
For this purpose it has previously been proposed to move the support of the brushes by an additional electromagnet or by means of a motor electromagnet and this support being brought into its working position mechanically or electrically as soon as the switch is stopped. by his test broom. According to the invention a part is combined to act under the control of the armature of an electro-motor of the comnutator, so as to engage or the brush springs near their ends and of

move this or these springs to bring them into or out of contact with the pads of the benches.
According to one characteristic of the invention, each brush comprises a pair of springs which each establish contact with one of the faces of the pads of the benches and a part is provided and has a shape such that during the movement of the switch it can move the springs away from the contacts. bench.
According to another characteristic of the invention, a part is adapted and subjected to the control of the armature of the motor electromagnet of the switch to act on the brush spring or springs near their ends each time. that the motor electromagnet is energized so that the brush springs move away from the bank contacts to pass from one contact to the next passing contact @o so that they make contact each, -bench during switch movement.
This construction makes it possible to have brushes with a pair of contact springs through which the contact pressure takes place on the two faces of the contact of the bench, which with the previously known devices was not possible since by lifting and pushing aside the brush -The only contact spring can be used.
The invention can be used for selectors having several movements for setting the brushes in the working position as well as for those which have only one movement to perform in one direction, preferably using the electro. -motor magnet which is provided.
Two embodiments of the invention will be described in detail and will apply to an ascending and rotating movement switch using the ascending electromagnet for controlling the operation of separating the brushes according to the embodiment given in fig. 1, 2 and 5, or the electromagnet

rotation forming part of the switch according to FIG. 4.
In the plans, FIG. 1 represents a front view. of the selector according to the first embodiment, all the parts which are not necessary to give the characteristic operation according to the invention having been omitted from FIG. 2 shows the plan view of the selector of the pin 1, with the upper selector support plate removed, the pin 3 shows the branches making contact and the contact making device on an enlarged scale and FIG. 4 shows the plan view of the second embodiment of the selector. the
In the selector shown in fig. 1 to 3 (number. 1 shows the fixed shaft of the selector on which the brush support 2 is located, provided with teeth to allow the movements of ascent and rotation.
Moreover, the part which controls the movement of the brush springs and which in the following description will be called the separator member, is placed on the support 2 so that it can perform a small rotational movement. This member consists of an arm 3 with two ends, the curved ends of which each carry an insulating piece 4 in the form of a wedge. Normally each of them engages in the contact springs of the brushes 5 without, however, separating these springs.
The selector is operated by the ascent electromagnet 6 and the rotation electromagnet 7 acting respectively on the associated pulse pawls 9 and 10 / with the armatures 8 and 8 'and on the teeth of the support 2 of the contact arm. An arm
11 controls the movement of the separator member on the shaft of the armature 8 'of the ascent electromagnet and is held in its rest position by means of a spring 12. A projection 13 is provided on the armature 8 'and comes to rest when the armature attracts against a projection, 14 of the control lever 11
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and this lever is brought into its working position in which it is held by means of a locking spring 15 so that any subsequent movement of the frame 8 has no effect on the control lever 11.
When moving the control lever 11, the separator member reaches its working position relative to the brushes, for which the wedge-shaped parts 4 penetrate between the brush springs up to a limit such that the latter open in deviating, This is done as follows.
The free end of the lever 11 of the armature 8 'of the ascent electromagnet is connected to a lever 16 forming an angle, the latter being connected with a rotating support 17. The movement of the lever 11 is therefore transmitted. to the rotating support 17 which thereby performs a slight rotational movement which is sufficient to move a segment 18 resting against a roller 17 'of the support, this segment being rigidly connected to the separator member, so that the two arms 3 of the separator member move so that the wedge-shaped parts 4 enter between the contacts of the brushes 5 in order to open them.
When the ascent movement is finished, the selector starts to rotate thanks to the rotation electromagnet 7 and the pawl 10 which is associated with it. An arm 1 ± integral with the stop pawl 10 'is supported on the locking spring 15 so that the excitation of the rotation electromagnet causes the arm 19 to move and that it moves the spring 15 from its locking position. The control lever 11 therefore returns to its initial position for which the separator member is again in its rest position.
In order to bring the control lever 11 back to its working position by the ascent electromagnet 6, this electromagnet is energized by means of a shaft contact as soon as the selector performs the first rotational movement and is kept pulled in until the selector turns
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
stops due to the test operation and so that the separator member is maintained in its working position during the rotary movement of the selector.
The same operations are repeated when the selector is released and the rotational movement is carried out to the last step. When this has taken place the ascension electromagnet is disconnected along with the rotating electromagnet and all the organs return to their rest positions.
In the embodiment shown in. plan on an enlarged scale and in fig. 4 the control of the separator is effected by the selector rotation electromagnet.
The rotation electromagnet 7. is provided with an armature 8 pivoting around the point 20. The curved end of the lever 21 of this armature carries at its free end the impulse pawl 10 which moves the support. 2 with teeth which is mounted freely on the shaft of the selector 1 and therefore the arm 5 progresses in steps. The arm is rigidly connected to the support 2. In addition on the support 2 is the separating member 3 combined to be able to rotate with its end 23 around the point 22.
Its displacement caused by the electromagnet 7 is effected by means of a lever 25 which rotates around 24 and its position is under the control of a spring 26, the roller 27 pressing lightly on the extension 23 of the member. separator. Each time the armature is drawn, the pulse pawl 10 engages the teeth 2 and rotates the brush holder by one step.
In this way, the rod 28 of the arm of the frame in contact with the lever 25 exerts pressure on the roller 27 which then rests against the extension 23 to rotate the separator member 3 so that the ends 4 in the form of wedge enter between the brush springs until the springs are separated, with each step and only have contact with the bench pads after the step is executed since during the return movement
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
due to the rotation of the separator member in the opposite direction, the pressure against the extension is again removed; the springs of the brushes 5 consequently resuming their closed position. This interaction is repeated with each step until the selector stops due to the test operation.
The recsorts of the brush 5 then remain in their closed position on the stud of the bench until the release of the selector takes place, the operations then being repeated in a similar manner.
It is understood that the transmission of the movement of the frame 8 'to the separator member 3 can be effected in other ways than those described above. It can be used for selectors having more than one movement and for those having only one rotary movement. The operation of separating the brushes by the ascent electromagnet as described in the first embodiment can also be used for a selector having only one rectilinear movement.
