<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

GRAPPLE FOR PNEUMATIC BANDAGE.
The present invention relates to grapples which are placed on the pneumatic tires of vehicles to give them sufficient grip in order to prevent any slippage of the wheels during the development of the force necessary for propelling the vehicle.
We already know different types of removable grapples, but most of them, if they make it possible to prevent the wheels from slipping in place, have the drawback of sliding themselves on the tire in the movement that the latter undergoes. by flattening in contact with the ground and by resuming its original shape as soon as, by the rotation of the wheel, the flattening ceases.
This sliding movement of the grapple on the tire has the disadvantage of wearing out the latter due to soil generally containing abrasive materials, which enters between the grapple and the tire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a removable grapple which can perform a radial movement in the direction of sagging of the tire, so as to remain in contact with the latter during this sagging, by eliminating any slip.
For this purpose, the grapple object of the invention is characterized in that it is mounted on a movable pivot connected by connecting rods to another fixed pivot, these two pivots being arranged perpendicular to the geometric spokes of the wheel.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, a retaining cleat is attached to the base of the grapple. This retaining cleat is normally in contact with the inside of the frame carrying the grapples when the tire, inflated to the maximum, is not undergoing the external compressive force. It is mounted so that it can pivot on itself and thus be erased to allow the grabs to be raised above the tire and to tilt them into the transport position inside the wheel.
Finally, to give the grapple resistance to torsion in the front and rear movements of the wheel, its end is provided with two projections transverse to the grapple, which are supported on the tire.
The accompanying drawings show an exemplary embodiment of a grapple according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a side elevational view of such a grapple, and in phantom lines the out of action position of this grapple.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the grapple attached to the side of a wheel.
Fig. 3 shows the plan view of the device allowing both the oscillation for the removal of the grapple and the displacement of the latter to follow the sag of the tire.
In these figures, 1 designates the body of a wheel whose jan-

te 2 carries a tire 3. On the outer face of the wheel is fixed a frame 4 which carries from place to place a pair of cheeks 5 between which is mounted a fixed pivot 6. A second pivot 7 is mounted at the end of rods 8 which form a body with a sleeve 9 surrounding the fixed pivot 6. It is thus capable of rotating around this fixed pivot 6, as shown in FIG. 1. The movable pivot 7 itself receives a sleeve 10 which forms a body. with a grapple 11 curved so as to embrace the tire 3, and the end of which is provided with two transverse projections 12 which bear on the tire in order to give the grapple a suitable resistance to torsion during the forward and backward movements of the wheel.
The base 13 of this grapple extends on the other side of the movable pivot 7 and receives a retaining cleat 14 which can pivot about an axis 15.
Under these conditions, the grapple is normally in contact with the tire. and this contact is kept constant thanks to the cleat 14 which is itself in contact with the inside of the grapple-holder frame.
When an external compressive force acts on the tire, for example when it comes into contact with the ground, the grapple follows the tire in its sagging, the cleat then leaving the frame to follow the movement of the grapple and the tire. which sags, towards the axle of the wheel.
When, by the rotation of the wheel, the tire returns to its original shape, the grapple is driven by this movement to return to its initial position and the cleat, by abutting against the frame, limits the movement of the grapple so as to maintain constant contact grapple and tire.
A grapple of this kind has several advantages. Not only is it capable of being easily removed from the wheel by pivoting the assembly around 1- * fixed axis 6 after having removed the retaining cleat in order to completely strip the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tire for driving on roads, but it has the advantage of following the tire during its sagging, thanks to the possible displacement of the movable pivot 7 around the fixed pivot 6 to which it is connected by the connecting rods 8. In addition, the the presence of the retaining cleat allows the movement of the mobile pivot only within determined limits, ensuring permanent contact of the grapple and the tire.
This prevents the introduction of soil between them and thus reduces tire wear.
Finally, the arrangement at the end of the grapple of transverse projections gives the whole of the grapple and the tire better operating qualities during work, and resistance to the forces to which they are subjected.
