<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Friction wheel mechanism or gear with automatic pressure application".
In known friction gears or wheel mechanisms, which are in connection with a toothed wheel mechanism or gear mounted on the side where the power is collected. the bearing or support of the control toothed wheel and of the controlled friction wheel oscillates freely around the center of the controlled toothed wheel, in order to produce the application pressure of the two friction wheels against each other by the back pressure or reaction which occurs during the transmission of the torque. The magnitude of this application pressure depends on the length of the swing arm. It is therefore necessary to give the two toothed wheels, by the use high quality constituent materials, dimensions such as the length of the swing arm,
which is always equal to the distance between the axes of the two toothed wheels, ie as small as possible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Now, as the product of the magnitude of the application pressure by the coefficient of friction is determining for the magnitude of the power to be transmitted to the place of friction, the object of the invention is to increase the application pressure of the fraction wheels against each other, produced by the back pressure of the toothed wheels. This is intended to allow, on the one hand, to transmit a greater power with the same dimensions. by increasing the pressure application for the same coefficient of friction, and, on the other hand, to obtain a more favorable coefficient of friction, that is to say lower for equal powers, by increasing the application pressure.
In the friction wheel mechanism according to the invention, in which the application pressure of the two wheels together is produced by the back pressure of the two toothed wheels and in which the controlled friction wheel as well as the control toothed wheel are mounted so as to be able to oscillate relative to the controlled toothed wheel, the axis of oscillation of the control toothed wheel is located, for the specified purpose, beyond the place of engagement of the teeth of the two wheels relative to the fixed axis of rotation of the controlled toothed wheel If the designates the axis of oscillation of the control toothed wheel by I. its axis of rotation by II and the line of engagement the control toothed wheel and the toothed wheel controlled by III,
can determine each desired lever arm ratio between I and II, on the one hand, and I and III, on the other hand.
EMI2.1
The back pressure or reaction of the two toothed wheels, which comes from the transmission of torque may. acts in the opposite direction to the direction of failure, is transformed into an increased application pressure of the two friction wheels against each other, this transformation being dependent

lever arm lengths of different sizes chosen ioi. In addition, the amplitude of the deflection movement is. according to the invention, limited exclusively by the deformation which occurs at the place of contact of the two friction wheels under the effect of the pressure of applying them against each other.
The use of constituent materials with suitable hard surface makes it possible to maintain this deformation within limits such that the increase in the spacing between the axes of the two toothed wheels, caused by the oscillating movement, remains within the limits of ordinary precision of the clearance between the teeth.
In order to allow a gradual change in the number of revolutions, the friction wheels can be conical, the control friction wheel having a diameter smaller than the controlled friction wheel and can be placed inside the latter. In this case, the lateral displacement of a friction wheel necessary for the change of the friction diameters which are in contact, is carried out parallel to the envelope line or generator of the cone surfaces.
The amplitude of the oscillation movement is not influenced by this displacement and is not conditioned by the slope of the conical friction wheel. in order to achieve full use of the application pressure, the friction crown of the controlled friction wheel can be cylindrical in shape, so that the axis of rotation of the conically shaped control friction wheel make with the axis of the wedged friction wheel an angle equal to half of the cone angle.
The drawing shows exemplary embodiments of friction wheel gear or mechanisms according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a mechanism, FIG. 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is a horizontal section along the line passing through the centers of the two toothed wheels. Fig. 3 shows schematically, partially in elevation, partially in section) an arrangement according to which the rotational axes of the two friction wheels in contact are parallel .In the arrangement according to fig.4, the axes of rotation of the two friction wheels being in contact form an angle between them.
In the mechanism shown, for example on the end of the shaft a, of a control motor b is fixed a friction wheel e of conical shape. Aveo this cooperates, as a controlled friction wheel, a wheel d in the form soup, conical (fig. 1-3) or cylindrical (fig. 4), but larger in diameter.
On the shaft d1 of this controlled friction wheel d is mounted directly and rigidly connected the control toothed wheel e, which in turn engages with a controlled toothed wheel g mounted fixedly so as to be able to rotate in the casing or boot t of the mechanism. The controlled friction wheel d and the control toothed wheel e have a common support or bearing h oscillating freely and which in the drawing, by way of example, takes the shape of a bushing or sleeve The axis of rotation I of this eccentric bearing h is the axis of oscillation for the control toothed wheel e. The axis I is located, with respect to the fixed axis of rotation of the toothed wheel commanded g (and consequently with respect to the shaft thereof),
beyond the point of meshing III of the two wheels e and g. If the control friction wheel c is moved parallel to its generator or envelope line as shown in fig. 3 and 4, the diameters coming in pontaet instead of friction, and consequently also the numbers of turns, do not modify.
The mechanism shown works as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The rotational movement imparted by the wedge motor b to the friotion wheel c in the direction of the arrow P1 visible in figure 1 causes by friction instead of contact between the two friction wheels c and d, the wheel friction d (arrow P2) and transmits this rotational movement via the control toothed wheel e to the controlled toothed wheel g (arrow P3).
From the torque of the machine to be actuated by means of the shaft w, which must be overcome by the controlled toothed wheel g, there results a torque which manifests itself as a back pressure or reaction of the same magnitude and, therefore, a pressure acting on the teeth in, opposite direction to the direction of rotation at the end of the radius of the pitch circle of the controlled toothed wheel g. This pressure on the teeth also acts with the same amplitude also at the end of the small radius of the circle pitch of the control gear wheel e. Thanks to the bearing h being able to oscillate freely around the axis I,
this pressure exerted on the teeth produces a torque of a determined amplitude which corresponds to the length of the lever arm (I-III) of the oscillating bearing and which tries to make the wheel turn around the axis of oscillation I control gear e and the

friction oomm.andée d mounted with it on the same shaft said in a direction such that said wheel d is pressed against wheel c.
According to the invention as a result of the inequality of the lengths of the arms of the levers acting in the mechanism, this application pressure necessary for the transmission instead of friction is equal in this case to a multiple of the pressure on the teeth coming from transmission of torque.
