<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
REVENDICATIONS

Metallic standard.
The present invention relates to a metal prop particularly intended for mines; this prop comprises two sliding elements relative to one another so as to allow the length of the prop to be varied, a locking device being provided to ensure the rigid connection between these two elements.
The subject of the invention is in particular a metal prop whose resistance to compression and more particularly to buckling is very high compared to its weight.
According to the invention, at least one of the elements constituting the prop is in the form of a tube; this embodiment provides very high resistance to the prop since the tube is the section which, for equal weight, best resists buckling,
To allow rapid loading of the prop, that is to say to wedge it strongly between the two parts of the gallery to be propped up, this loading is, according to the invention, obtained by the action of a pressurized fluid. For this purpose, the tube-shaped element serves as a cylinder for receiving the pressurized fluid, the other element being provided to act like a piston inside this cylinder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The interior element can, also according to the invention, be constituted by a tube; in this case, to increase the resistance it can be filled with a hard material such as for example emulsified concrete so as not to unnecessarily increase its weight.
This interior element may also according to the invention be constituted by a piece of wood or similar material coated or not with a sheet metal jacket.
In order to allow the prop to effectively resist the descent of loads, that is to say for example the descent of the weight of the gallery, the clamping between the two elements is advantageously increased thanks to a slight taper given to the interior element.
The invention also relates to a system for locking the two elements which notably allows remote unlocking; this locking is obtained according to the invention by a collar provided with inclined faces cooperating with wedges acting radially; these wedges can be lined with a relatively soft material such as wood, fiber, etc.
Further according to the invention, the collar is supported by a fixed ring integral with the lower element of the prop, this collar possibly being provided with an arm intended for. serve as a fulcrum for the remote control of the collar arm; for this purpose a chain is attached to the end of each of the arms and is connected by its middle part to a pull strand.
The appended drawings show by way of nonlimiting example one embodiment of the invention. This extends to the various original features that include
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the arrangement shown.
Fig.l is an elevational view of a metal prop according to the invention.
Fig. 2. is a sectional view through the locking system.
The prop consists in main order by two elements in the form of tubes 1 and 2 sliding one inside the other.
The inner tube 2 is provided at its base with a sole 3 while the upper tube is terminated by a cap 4 receiving a bell 5.
Compressed air is admitted to the lower part of the lower tube 1 through a valve 6. This compressed air acts inside the tube 1 forming the cylinder to move the upper element 2 upwards, the lower face of which is provided. by design a sealing system 7; the action of the compressed air thus obtained makes it possible to load the prop very quickly.
The locking system comprises a collar 8 rotating around the upper part of the lower element 1. This collar is provided on its inner face with inclined surfaces 9 made in the form of spirals and which, during the rotation of the collar, press on the wedges. 10 to push them radially against the inner element 2; to oppose the driving of the wedges during rotation, they pass through appropriate recesses made in the outer tube 1. The loads supported by the strut are therefore transmitted by the upper element 2 to the lower element 1 through the wedges 10, the collar 8 and a fixed ring 11 integral with the lower tube 1.
The effect of giving the prop a certain elasticity, that is to say in particular to allow it to be shortened by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the sinking of the loads, the wedges 10 can be provided on their active face with a relatively soft material such as wood, ferrodo, lead etc ...
The remote unlocking of the stanchion is effected by means of a traction strand 14 fixed to the middle part of a cellar, not 15 whose ends are respectively attached to an arm 13 adapted to the collar 8 and to an arm 12 adapted to the fixed ring 11.
Strand 14 and chain 15 therefore constitute a parallelogram for multiplying forces, the action carried out on arm 13 being supported by fixed arm 12.
In order to increase the compressive strength, the upper element 2 may be filled with a hard material such as for example emulsified concrete which provides the assembly with high compressive strength. without, however, significantly increasing the weight.
This upper element 2 could also be constituted by a simple piece of wood whether or not furnished with a sheet metal jacket.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described by way of example but extends to any metal prop which comes within the spirit or scope of the following claims.
