<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
broche, etc.

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Improvements to the length-adjustable cremone or Spanish locks, for windows and doors.
The present invention relates to improvements to locking mechanisms with locking mechanism or. Españette, for doors, windows, etc., these closing mechanisms or bolts being adjustable in length between certain determined limits and comprising two locking rods or rods, movable towards one another or vice versa, one end each rod being introduced into a common box in such a way that these ends, in the form of a rack, are located parallel to each other in the box, on either side of a toothed wheel which, taking at the same time in the two racks, determines the movement of approach or separation of the two rods thanks to a handle removably connected to the toothed ratchet.
The racks of the two locking rods are longer than necessary for the locking movement, so that by moving
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the rods whose ends outside the common box are partially or completely surrounded by guide bridges, movable between certain limits with respect to the rods, the mechanism can be adapted to different dimensions of windows or doors.
The ratchet for attacking the racks is fixed on a pin or shaft, supported in the box and one or both ends of which, projecting out of the box, have very fine axial grooves or ribs over the entire circumference. A hollow pin carried by the handle or operating button internally carries corresponding ribs or grooves so that the handle - when the locking rods have been adjusted to the desired length by making them enter or exit the common box - can be nested on the tree with its head (or handle proper) in approximately vertical or horizontal position, from which it can then be turned in a horizontal or vertical position to retract or extend the locks towards the unlocked or locked position respectively.
In the closing mechanism of the type mentioned, and especially when the window or door has a considerable height, it often becomes desirable that the door or window be, towards the middle of its height, pressed against the frame or upright, or against the other half-door or half-window. For this purpose, it is appropriate that in the arrangement in question, the axis of the handle comprises at the end directed towards the box, a tab capable of coacting with a plate provided with a notch for this tab, and mounted on the other half-door or half-window, or on the post of the frame.
The tab or bolt can be made more or less bevelled, as is known, and the notch or keeper of the plate can also be bevelled so that the bolt comes, when locking, press the window or the door against the other half-window or half-door, or against the post of the frame. Towards the middle of its length, the axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the handle carries a collar against which a plate rests, pushed on the handle before it is placed on the axis; when this plate has subsequently been fixed to the door or window by screws or other members, it retains the handle on its axis and it therefore becomes impossible to tear the handle from its axis.
So that the rotational movement of the handle can be limited to about a quarter of a turn for the operation of the lock, there is provided in said plate a curved notch extending over about 90 degrees and in which is engaged a pin carried by the axis of the handle, thus limiting the amplitude of the pivoting of the handle to 90.
According to a special embodiment, the axis of the handle, or the hollow pin of the handle can, at its end directed towards the box, have notches or protrusions in the direction of the length, which cooperate , when this hollow pin is nested on the axle, with protrusions or notches of the hub of a freely rotating latch on the axis of the ratchet so that, after the locking rods have been adjusted in height door or window, the handle, always in the correct position, can be coupled to the latch hanging down.
According to a modification of this embodiment, the freely rotating latch, provided with projections or notches on its hub, is arranged outside the box, on the axis of the ratchet, or on an extension of the hub of the ratchet, which in this case is internally provided with fine grooves co-operating with grooves in the axis of the ratchet, which can be pushed into or withdrawn from the hub, which axis, outside the box, carries a collar to hold the latch in place between this collar and the box when the axle is engaged in the hub of the ratchet in the box.
The notches or projections coacting with the projections or notches of the latch hub, are not in this case on the hollow spindle fitted on the axis, but on a coupling sleeve provided with
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
its internal cylindrical surface of fine grooves or ribs and mounted on a small cylinder provided, outside and inside, with fine longitudinal ribs or grooves; the internal ribs or grooves of this cylinder correspond to those of the axis of the ratchet and to those of an axis fixed in the internal end of the tubular pin of the handle.
According to a further modification of this embodiment, the tubular pin of the handle is provided on its internal cylindrical surface with fine longitudinal grooves or ribs, corresponding to those of the axis of the ratchet, which can be pushed into or outside this tubular pin, and also in or out of the ratchet, mounted in the box and provided inside with fine axial ribs, axis on which the latch is rigidly fixed.
So that the handle cannot be taken out of the axis of the ratchet, when the closing mechanism is put in place on a window or a door, a protective plate or guard, provided with a hole for the tubular pin of the handle , and screw holes, is first pushed on this tubular pin, then a fixing plate is fixed to the tube exactly in the notches or protrusions of this one, this fixing plate resting against the guard plate which is then attached by screws or other components, to the window or door. Instead of being retained by the fixing plate, the guard plate may be retained by a metal ring or the like, partially penetrating into a peripheral groove made around the inner end of the handle.
A collar is arranged on the tube of the handle, on the other side of the guard plate, so that the latter is held on the tube of the handle both by this collar, on the one hand, and by the fixing plate, on the other hand.
The closing mechanism can of course be fitted to windows and doors opening inwards as well as to those opening outwards. Because the box containing the racks is relatively long and the ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
toothed locking rods, which penetrate into this box, are also relatively long, the closing mechanism, more exactly the locking rods, can be adjusted between fairly large limits, which can vary between 30 centimeters and more, from the smallest to the largest.
This is of very great practical importance, since the manufacturer therefore only has to produce a few standard sizes, and retailers and wholesalers no longer need to have in store a whole series of mechanisms with rods of determined fixed dimensions.
The parts of the locking rods which extend out of the box, may have a semi-round or semi-circular shape in cross section, but at their ends, both the outer and the inner ones, they should have a flattened shape in cross section. such that they give the appearance of a very closed U ,. The ends of these rods which penetrate into the bolte have the: .base of this U cut into a rack.
Each of the locking rods is, in the embodiment considered, provided, outside the box, with an elongated slot or notch, in one, two or more points, the length of which corresponds to the amplitude of the locking movement. age; a screw passes through this slot or notch, and is fixed to the door or window and each of the locking rods is surrounded, at each of these points, with a protective screen, provided with a screw hole and folded over the rod.
Each guide of the locking rods is, after fixing the closing mechanism to the door or window, mortised in, or fixed to the surface on the door or window; it is connected, to its locking rod, in such a way that it must accompany this rod during the adjustment of the useful length of the latter and, after this adjustment, it allows this rod to slide in the guide, without driving it, during the locking and unlocking movements imparted by the operating handle.
Each guide can advantageously include a projection, a nose or other similar organ (embossing, point,

brooch, etc. ) which enters a notch made in the bolt-rod over a length such that this rod, when the mechanism has been adjusted to the length corresponding to the height of the door or window, can move, with respect to the guide, of a length corresponding to the amplitude of displacement for the locking and for the unlocking, and this guide may be made of a metal strip bent around its lock rod.
So that the guide, when it is introduced by one end into the rack box, cannot come out of the latter, its end which penetrates into this box has a stop part, for example in the form of a flange bent towards the outside, which, when the guide tends to come out of the box, abuts against a stop of this box.
The stop of the rack box, which coacts with the stop part of the guide, is preferably formed by a tab cut out of the box and which, with the opposite wall and possibly also with the adjacent walls, guides said guide during his movement. The latch rod guide may only surround the latch rod at the outer end of the rod and it can be securely attached to the upper or lower end of the door or window - after the The mechanism has been adjusted to the desired length - by screws passing through one or more tabs folded out of this guide.
When the guide is located on one side of the window or the door - and in this case, this guide as well as the gearbox is flattened and constitutes, with this box and the other guides also flattened, a reinforcement at a worm edge. - window or door tical - may include a ring which passes through the guide and is fixed to the latter by riveting, welding, etc. to replace protrusion, nose, etc. mentioned above. This ring, like other similar ones, pass through the other guides and the rack and pinion box, forms holes for fixing screws and at the same time, with the opposite and adjacent walls of the guides and the box. rack, form guides for the locking rods.

Fig. 14 is a front view, Fig. 15 a side view of the upper end of the locking rod, with the guide in section, while Fig. 16 is a cross section of the rod of Fig .14, fig.17 and 18 give cross-sections of two embodiments of a locking rod, formed of two simple rods welded to one another.
1 designates the shaft which, in a door, extends on both sides of the box mortised or embedded in the door, so that the handle can be mounted on the shaft from either side of the door. door. For windows where the handle or cremone bolt can only be on the inside of the window, the shaft 1 extends only on one side outside the box and is supported, by one end, in this box, by the internal face of one of the walls.
Shaft 1 has its end (s) 2 projecting outside the box, fitted over its entire circumference with fine ribs 4. On this shaft is wedged a toothed ratchet 3 which meshes with the racks formed at the end of the locking rods b and 6, located on either side of the ratchet. The rod 6 (fig.l) has an elbow 8 so that the locking rods 5 and 6 are roughly in line with one another for their part located outside the box 7. At the exit of box, each bolt-rod is guided by a tab 9 of the box.
So that the locking rods are sufficiently strong and rigid in their part located outside the box, but that despite this the rods can be as light as possible, these parts ex-

dulls are each preferably made of two rods 10 joined together for example by a weld along line 11.- 12 designates a guide made of a sheet of metal surrounding the rod-bolt and mortised in the wood of the door or the window.
These wraparound guides greatly facilitate the movement of the locking rods, which, especially for example when a window has been closed after having been exposed to rain, are easily locked in the grooves made for this purpose in the door 13 or the door. window 14. The pin 15 of the handle 15a is hollow and internally provided with ribs 4a and grooves corresponding to the grooves and ribs of the shaft 1, so that the rod 15 of the handle can be pushed onto the shaft 1 keeping the handle always in a determined position, after which the shaft 1 can be turned by means of the handle. On the inner end of the hollow rod of the handle is formed a latch 16.
The free end of this latch has the shape shown in the section of fig. 2a, so as to be able to take easily in a plate 21, attached to the other half-door or half-window, or to the , amount of the frame, this clamping plate 21 being equipped with an oblique slot 22. for the latch, which, during locking, presses against the oblique side 23 of this slot or keeper. The handle can be retained on the shaft 1 by the guard plate 18, threaded on the handle 15a, until it abuts against the collar 19, before the handle is pushed on the shaft 1, and after the locking rods have been adjusted to length according to the height of the window or door. The guard plate 18 is then fixed by the screws 20 to the door 13 or window 14.
In the plate 18 is formed a window in the form of an arc of a circle, into which penetrates a nose 24 of the hollow rod of the handle, this nose limiting the amplitude of rotation of the handle to, for example, a quarter turn.
For the application of a closing mechanism according to the invention, to a window or a door of a certain height,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the standard dimension of the mechanism closest to this height is chosen, and the locking rods are pushed aside or brought together until they have exactly the desired length, after which the handle is mounted on the shaft 1. Each rod-lock is movable relative to its guide 12, but according to an amplitude corresponding to the locking movement. During the approach or separation of the locking rods, the ratchet 3 turns freely, since the handle is not yet on the shaft 1.
In the embodiment of Figs. 5 to 10, the handle is further designated by 15a, and its latch by 16, cooperating with the plate 21 in the locking position of the closing mechanism. 26 designates the compressed part of the bolt rod, which in this case has a semicircular or crescent shape in cross section. 27 is the internal end of the rod-lock, cut into a rack. 28 is a slot in the bolt rod, for a screw 30, which presses it against the window or the door, and 29 is a bracket fixed to the post of the frame, and into which the end penetrates, for locking beveled outer rod-lock.
The guard plate is denoted by 32 and 31 are screws that secure it to the window or door, after the tubular rod of the handle has been mounted on the shaft 34, which corresponds to the shaft 1 of the previous example. The guides or protectors 33 (fig. 7), at the notches or slots 28, each have a hole for a screw 30. The internal end 35 of the handle in this case has notches 37 (or projections) corresponding to projections 36 (or notches) of the latch hub 16, which hangs freely downward, on the ratchet shaft, and the guard plate 32 is retained on this end of the hollow shaft of the handle by the plate 38. On the other side of the guard plate 32, there is provided on the hollow rod of the handle a collar visible in FIGS. 6 and 7.
Following the modification shown in fig. 6a, the ratchet 3 can rotate in the box 7 of the mechanism, and its hub has an extension on which the latch 16 can freely rotate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
outside the door. The latch can, however, if the ratchet does not have this projection, be mounted directly on the shaft of the rock, outside the box. The latch hub, in this case also, has two protrusions 36 (or notches) to coact with notches 37 (or protrusions) which, however, in the example are made on a coupling sleeve 36a, mcrté soe-a small cylinder 34a, provided with ribs inside and outside.
This cylinder 34a is pushed on the ribbed shaft 1, which is introduced into a central hole of the ratchet 3, which is provided with fine ribs corresponding to those of the shaft 1. The latter has approximately in its middle a collar retaining the latch on the extension of the ratchet 3. In the internal end of the handle 15a is firmly fixed a pin 34 grooved externally, and the free end of which is pushed into the internally grooved cylinder 34a, when the handle is placed in the mechanism.
Instead of being retained by the attachment plate 38, the guard plate may be retained by a metal ring 38a or equivalent member, which partially penetrates a peripheral groove around the inner end 35 of the handle.
Fig. 6b shows another modification. of this embodiment. Here the ratchet is also supported in the box of the mechanism and comprises in its central hole, fine axial ribs, likewise the internal cylindrical surface of the hollow rod of the handle, corresponding to the external ribs of the shaft 1, which can be introduced into or out of the hollow rod of the handle and also into and out of the ratchet 3, supported in the box 7 and provided internally with fine ribs, the latch being firmly fixed on this shaft 1.
In these two modifications (fig. 6a and 6b) we are independent of the thickness of the door and the window, so that the closing mechanism can be adapted to any thickness.
In fig.ll, A denotes the longest length of the closing mechanism and B its shortest length. 10 designates the rod-lock, 12 an enveloping guide for this rod and 7 the box of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
mechanism. In the embodiment of fig.ll and 13, the box 7 has a depression 46 a pin, point or the like, and the rod-lock has a notch 47. The upper wedge-shaped end of the rod 10 , is designated by 49. It penetrates, for locking, in a keeper formed in the lining 48 of the frame.
In the embodiment of fig.12, 14, 15 and 16, the stop in the enveloping guide has. shaped as an annular ring 43 and the upper and lower ends 41 of the locking rods are, at the outermost part, 42, curved by about 1800 so as to embrace the corresponding ends or extreme edges of the guide enveloping and are thus guided by the latter in their vertical movement.
When the wrap-around guides are each notched in a notch in the door or window, they do not necessarily have to surround the latch rod along its entire length, but may be of such dimensions that they only surround the outer end. of these rods, in which case, after adjustment of the rods in length, the guides are fixed to the window or door by screws or the like passing through folded tabs of these guides.
The locking rods can over a greater or lesser part of their length, each be made of two simple rods, of square, rectangular or profiled section, these two rods being for example joined by spot welding, as shown for example. Figs. 17 and 18; rods thus composed can be made lighter than if they were of a single piece, while ensuring a solidity, a resistance also great particularly at the exposed points.
It goes without saying that the invention is not strictly limited to the details and forms shown and described, and that it is susceptible to numerous modifications without departing from the scope of the claims.
