MACHINE A MOULER,! MATRICE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

pour ramener les divers passages et lumières dans un même plan;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
ouverture.
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

MOLDING MACHINE ,! MATRIX.
The invention relates to molding machines, matrix, and relates especially, in these machines, to the mechanism ensuring the opening and closing of the dies in several parts, for the loading of the die and the ejection of the molding. .
In molding machines using multi-part dies, it is necessary to provide some mechanism for bringing the parts together for receiving a load of metal and then opening the die, separating the parts, in order to allow mold removal. Generally, mold removal is performed automatically during the die opening movement, and as a result of the operation of automatic ejection means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In current practice, it is common practice to operate the molding machine at high speed in order to meet the requirements of mass production of moldings. As a result, the die closing movement takes place at a relatively high speed with a snap or noise from parts of the die as they engage to close the die, and which is open to objection.
Likewise, due to the high speed of operation of the machine, the opening movement of the die is executed very quickly and, therefore, there is an unwanted slamming or noise when the means of automatic ejection are actuated at the end of the opening movement of the die.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved mechanism for operating the die which actuates the latter during its closing movement, so as to eliminate this unwanted slamming at the end of the closing operation, and nevertheless iron. - me and maintains the parts of the matrix so as to bring them to adapt precisely and intimately to each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a die control mechanism which, by actuating there or the movable parts of the die, to open the latter, actuates the movable part or parts so as to avoid the clicking or unwanted noise of the die. parts resulting from the operation of the automatic ejection means, and nevertheless moves the parts of the die so as to ensure the proper operation of the ejection mechanism.
Another object of the invention lies in the establishment of means for maneuvering the die which, by opening the die after a molding has been injected, forces the moving part or parts of the die to begin the opening movement. suddenly, and at a relatively high speed. This results in proper die "breaking" so that if cores are used they are forced out of the molding in a much easier and cleaner manner.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and the resulting shake effectively serves to detach the molding from the fixed part (s) of the die, when this arrangement is employed.
Another object of the invention is to provide means, for effecting the adjustment of the mechanism actuating the die, in order to ensure the compensation in view of the use of different dimensions of the dies. Other objects and advantages will emerge from the detailed description which follows and from the appended drawings which show a practical embodiment of the invention, and in which:

to bring back the various passages and lights in the same plane;
Fig.ll is a similar view of the valve brought into the position corresponding to the opening of the die.
With particular reference to Figs. 1 to 3, the machine shown comprises a frame, formed of a base 12 comprising feet 13 and supporting a hollow frame body 14.
The body 14 is open at the bottom, and the base 12 is open at the top in order to leave a free space for the assembly - piston and cylinder actuating the die which will be described later.
Screws 13 secure together the base 12 and the body 14 by their edges in contact.
The frame body 14 comprises a rising portion 16 to which is fixed in a removable manner, in any suitable manner, the fixed half 17 of the die. The movable half 18 of the die is detachably attached to one end of an arm 19 mounted so as to perform reciprocating movements in an opening 20 through a second riser 21 at the opposite end of the die. the machine. An elongated pinion 22 is mounted in the post 21 and meshes with rack teeth 23 of the arm 19, so that the rotation of the pinion, in a clockwise direction (figs. 1 and 2), serves to open. die, while rotation in the opposite direction serves to close it. A handwheel 24 comprises manual means for directly actuating the pinion 22.
The toggle-shaped members are interposed between the opposite end of the arm 19 and the extensions 25,25 'of the body 14 to lock the matrix in the closed position, as is apparent from fig.l.
The toggle-shaped members comprise a connecting rod 26, pivotally connected at 27, to the arm 19, and also pivotally connected, at 28, to the connecting rods 29, 29 '. These latter connecting rods are pivotally connected, at 30, 30- ', to the frame, these said pivots being adjustable, horizontally by means of screws 31, 31' so that the locking mechanism
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The toggle lock can be adjusted to function properly when used with dies having slightly varying thicknesses.
A rising rod 32 is pivotally connected, at 28, to the toggle members, to actuate the latter.
The lower end of this connecting rod is pivotally connected, at 33, with a lever 34, pivotally mounted at 35 on a rod 36 extending between the legs of the frame. The outer end of lever 34 is in the form of a pedal 34 '. A console 37 is suitably secured to the ground, in the vicinity of the end of the machine, this console comprising uprights 38, 38 'carrying a pin 39 on which a lever 40 is articulated. The outer end of the lever 40 forms a pedal 41, while the internal end 40 'of the lever is arranged under the pedal 34'. A spring 42 pushes the lever 40 towards the position it occupies in FIG. 1.
The members occupying the position corresponding to the closing of the die, of fig.l, when the operator presses the pedal 41, the internal end 40 'of the lever 40 lifts the pedal-shaped end of the lever 34 and, consequently, causes the connecting rod 32 to break upwards the toggle formed by the connecting rods 26, 29 and 29 ', so that the handwheel 24 can be turned to open the die quickly, as shown in fig. 3. Spring 42 returns lever 40 to its normal position when pedal 41 is released. To close the die, and lock it, the handwheel is turned in the opposite direction, and when the movable part 18 of the die approaches its closed position, the operator depresses the pedal 34 '.
This has the effect of forcing the connecting rod 32 to stiffen the toggle and therefore firmly lock the parts 17 and 18 of the die together.
The handwheel 24 and the pedals 34 'and 41 are intended for manual handling of the machine, in particular when adjusting; the matrix for a new operation.
As the means intended to supply the metal charges to the closed matrix do not form part of the invention, the means
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
loading used were only indicated in broken lines in fig. 2, set up to inject a molding. Obviously, means of any other suitable type for charging the matrix with or metal, in the molten state / in any other moldable state, may be employed.
In general, the illustrated metal loading mechanism comprises an assembly 43, pivotally supported at 44 on the machine frame, for vertical tilting movement between the illustrated elevated die loading position; when the latter is closed, is a lowered position, inactive, when the matrix is open. The charging device 43 comprises a furnace 45, a melting pot 46 and a swan neck 47. The latter receives the molten metal from the pot 46, and is conditioned to discharge it under pressure through the nozzle 48 of the swan neck in the closed die, provided with a side entry at the separation line.
Manually controlled fluid pressure means, consisting of a piston-cylinder assembly 49, and a servo-controlled piston 50 disposed in the gooseneck 47, serve to bring the metal to the die and to apply the necessary pressure to it.
The assembly 43 is moved between its die loading positions, and inactive, by a link extending between the bottom of the assembly and the internal part of the foot lever 34. This link comprises a toggle 51 ( fig.2) extending between the bottom of the assembly 43 and one end of a shaft 52, rotatably mounted in tabs 53 (only one of which is shown) of the frame.
The opposite end of the shaft has a crank 54 to which is connected a connecting rod 55 via a universal joint 56, while the lower end of the connecting rod has, with the lever 34, a shaped connection universal joint, 57.
Thus, when the inner end of the lever 34 lifts during the closing of the die, the toggle 51 is extended by the mechanism described, to tilt the loading assembly 43 upwards, and bring the nozzle 48 into position. loading engagement with the die,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The final movement of the nozzle, to come into engagement with the die, occurs just after the parts of the die come into contact. This is achieved by a small additional upward movement made by lever 34 after the die parts come into engagement, this movement being allowed by a play connection between arm 19 and part 18 which will be described by after.
Similarly, when the inner end of lever 34 descends ,. on opening the die, the first part of this movement tilts the assembly 43 downwards, to release the nozzle from the die, after which the die opens while the said assembly continues its movement of descent.
A carriage 58 is slidably mounted, to perform limited movement, at the outer end of the arm 19, which end has a pocket 191 and the movable half 18 of the die is detachably secured by screws. 18 ', to carriage 58.
The carriage 58 has a hollow extension 59 '; open at one end, which receives arm 19. This extension carries screw tabs 60, entering corresponding elongated slots, 61, in the arm, to limit outward movement of the carriage on the arm. A helical spring 61 is placed under compression in the pocket 19 '. Thus, when the die is open, as shown in FIG. 3, the spring 62 elongates or extends the assembly of the cart and the arm, so that each tab 60 engages with the outer end of its slot 61.
However, during the last part of the movement of the arm 19, to close the die, the part 18 of the die engages the fixed part 17 to close the die, and then the small additional path of the foot lever 34 discussed above, and the resulting additional movement of arm 19, first determines additional compression of spring 62 to elastically hold the die parts together, and then rigidly locks these parts when the outer end of the arm engages the internal end 63 of the extension 51 'of the die carriage (fig.l)
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
During this compression of the spring.
62, the legs 60 move to the other ends of their slots and the metal loading nozzle, 48, is brought into engagement with the closed die. When the arm's retraction motion begins, opening the die, spring 62 relaxes and tabs 60 slide outward into their slots to allow die nozzle 48 to be released before the die opens. The tabs 60 then come into engagement with the outer ends of their slots, so that the die is open and the defined organs return to their positions of FIG. 3. It is important that the elastic connection, with clearance, between the arm and the die carriage, allows the use of die parts of different thicknesses.
The means for ejecting the molding, as shown in the open position of the die of FIG. 3, comprises a reciprocating ejection plate 65, disposed in the chamber 66 of the die carriage 58. Pins ejector return valve 67 and ejector pins 68, slidably enter passages of die half 18, and are attached to plate 65. The means for automatically actuating the ejector means tion include ejector bars 69, slidably mounted in passages of die carriage 58. The inner ends of these bars enter chamber 66 to actuate plate 65, while the outer ends carry adjustable screws 69 ', whereby the length of the bars can be adjusted.
With this arrangement, as shown in fig. 1, when the die closes, the return pins 67 are pushed inward by the stationary half of the die, to move the plate 65 to the right and bring back ejector pins 68.
This movement of the plate 65 pops out the ejector bars 69, ready to eject the molding when the die opens.
When the die opens, the discharge means remain in the position mentioned until the moment when the screws 69 'of the dielectric bars 69 strike the post 21 of the frame towards the end of the movement of the die.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
opening. This pushes the bars 69 through the die carriage to actuate plate 65 and pins 68 to eject the mold. When the opening movement of the arm 19 is completed, the members of the ejection mechanism return to their positions of f ig.3, with the plate 65 against the part 18 of the die.
The motor means intended to actuate the mechanism described for opening and closing the die, and to which the invention relates more particularly, will now be described.
A fluid pressure element is arranged in the hollow frame of the machine, this element comprising a cylinder 70 and a double-acting piston 71. The cylinder 70 has a perforated tab 70 ', thanks to which it is pivotally mounted, to its upper end, on a bar 72 supported in the frame of the machine. The piston rod 73 is pivotally connected, at its lower end 73 ', to the inner end of the foot lever 34. When the die is closed, as in fig.l, the piston occupies the upper end. when the die is opened from the cylinder, / as shown in fig. 3, the piston is housed in the bottom of the cylinder.
Compressed air, or other suitable fluid, is supplied to and withdrawn from opposite ends of cylinder 70 through line 74 from the bottom thereof and through line 75 leading to its top. A console 76, attached to extensions 25, 25 'of the frame of the machine, carries valve members for manually controlling, in principle, the flow of pressurized fluid in the pipes 74 and 75. These control members valve include a bDite 77, provided with a valve seat equipped with lights, forming a cover, 78, attached to this box (see figs 9,10 and 11 for details). The chamber 79 of the box contains a rotating valve member, 80, provided with lights which is pushed back into intimate contact with the seat: -78 by a helical spring 81.
A line 82, from an appropriate power source, continuously supplies fluid at full pressure to the valve chamber 79.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The cylinder line 74 connects to the passage 83 in the cover 78; the pipe 75 connects to the passage 84, and an exhaust pipe 85 connects to the passage 86, all of these passages opening out on the underside of the cover, in an arched formation (see FIG. 9). In the same arched formation, the valve plate 80 has a passage passing right through it, 87, a similar passage 88 and a groove 89. The valve 80 is actuated by a rod 90 (FIG. 9) provided with a handle 91 secured to its upper end (figs. 1 and 2).
When the die is closed and the plunger 71 raised, as in Fig. 1, the valve handle 91 is in the rearmost position of Fig.l, which is the phantom position or the "back position". closed die "of Fig.9, At this time the valve passages are connected as shown in Figs 9 and 10, full pressure passing from the valve chamber 79, through passage 87, to the pipe 74 and thence to the lower end of cylinder 70. At this point, passage 88 is blinded, but groove 89 connects passages 84 and 86, so as to danger the upper end. from cylinder 70 through line 75, to exhaust line 95. When the die is to be opened, handle 91 is moved to its most forward position, ie the "die open" position "of FIG. 9.
The positions of the ports at this time are shown in fig. 11, and in this position full pressure passes from the valve chamber 79, through passage 88, into line 75 and thence to the top of the cylinder. 70 to force the piston 71 down to open the die.
At the same time, the passage 87 is blinded, but the groove 89 connects the passages 83 and 86 to ventilate the bottom of the cylinder 70, through the pipe 74, towards the exhaust pipe 85. The movement of the handle 91 in the position "neutral" of fig.9, blinds the passages 87 and 88, but connects the passages 83 and 84 to the passage 86 and, therefore, connects the two ends of the cylinder 70 to the exhaust pipe 85
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The rate of discharge from the exhaust line 85 to the atmosphere, for the compressed air coming from the ends of the cylinder 70, is automatically regulated by the operating mechanism of the die, in the particular manner which will be described. below,
so as to modify the power or force applied to the operating mechanism of the die by the piston 71 during its movements corresponding to the opening and closing of the die and thus, as explained below, controls the speed of movement of the operating mechanism in such a way as to eliminate the noise or clicking, subject to objection, of the parts at the end of each stroke of the arm 190
The exhaust pipe 85 leads to an inlet port 92 of the valve box 93 (Figs. 4 to 8) secured by screws 94; on the rear face of the machine frame. Into the open end of the cylindrical chamber 95 of the valve box is screwed a cap 96 having an adjustable head 97. An exhaust port 98 is provided in the valve box.
An exhaust control valve 99 is mounted to reciprocate in the valve chamber 95;, this valve 99 having an inclined surface 99 'conditioned to act in conjunction with an' inclined valve seat 92 ', in order to to regulate the flow of exhaust fluid from line 85 into chamber 95, where it passes, through the annular space 100 between the valve and the box, and out through the exhaust opening 98.
Since the extent of annular space 100 is greater than the extent of either inlet 92 or exhaust port 98, which are the same, it is clear that the speed at which the pressurized fluid escapes from the exhaust port 98 will be directly controlled by the extent of the annular space 101 between the tilted valve seat 92 'and the tilted valve surface 99'. This extent naturally varies with the distance between the valve and its seat.
When the valve 99 begins to open, the discharge of the exhaust fluid from the lumen 92, and consequently from the lumen 98, is hampered, but increases rapidly until the time or extent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
of the annular space 101 is equal to that of the exhaust lumen 98, or the entrance lumen 92.
This gives a maximum velocity of the lumen escaping fluid 98, which persists until the valve reaches its extreme open or right-hand position (figs.
4 and 7).
When valve 99 closes, the reverse action of that described occurs, with maximum evacuation occurring at ports 92 and 98 until when the valve reaches the point where the space expands 101 and exhaust port 98 are equal, whereupon the restriction of the exhaust flow occurs rapidly as the valve approaches its seat.
The valve 99 is actuated by its rod 102, which passes through the plug 96, and by a helical spring 103 in the valve box, which constantly pushes the valve towards its seat, in order to restrict the discharge of the exhaust fluid. The load imposed on the valve 99 by its spring can be modified by screwing or unscrewing the cap 96, in order to vary the resistance of the valve to the evacuation of the exhaust fluid and, consequently, to adjust the speed of the valve. its exhaust.
The valve stem 102 is pivotally connected at its outer end, by a pin 102 ', to the fork-shaped end 105 of a connecting rod 106. A nut 104, locked to the pin 102' by a nut. pillar, acts on a spring washer 104 'to generate a frictional resistance sufficient to provide for the pivoting movement of the connecting rod 106, except when the latter is positively moved, as will be explained later, L The outer end of the connecting rod 106 has a U-shaped slot 107. A screw 109 penetrates the end of the upper leg 108 of the slot 107, and this screw is adjustably mounted in the end. the connecting rod and secured by a lock nut 1091.
By releasing 1 locking nut and adjusting the screw or stop inward or outward, the effective length of the branch 108 of the slot can be changed. An adjustment or stop screw 110 and a
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
110 analogues are provided in the lower branch 111 of the slot.
Pinion 22 projects from the rear face of the machine, and has an annular groove 112 which receives the lower rounded edge of a retaining plate 113 secured to the frame by screws 114. A radially disposed arm 116 is formed. rigidly fixed to the end of the pinion 22 by a screw 115 This arm is also pinned to the pinion by a pin 117 to prevent movement of the arm around the screw 115 The outer end of the arm 116 carries a head pin 118 , which enters and is conditioned to work in the U-shaped slot, 107, of the connecting rod 106, as the pinion 22 swings back and forth during machine operation.
FIG. 4 indicates the positions of the arm 116 and of the ankle 118 when the die occupies the closed position of FIG. 1. Fig * 7 shows the positions of arm 116 and ankle 118 after the die has been fully opened as shown in fig. 3. During this operation, pinion 22 rotates and pin 118 moves, following an arc path somewhat less than 360, counterclockwise, as shown in Figs.
4 to 7.
When the die is closed, the pinion 22 rotates in the opposite direction and the pin 118 again follows its arcuate path to bring the members back to the position of fig.4. With the arrangement and the proportions of the members shown, the valve stem 102 is aligned with the center of the pinion 22, and the arc displacement of the pin 118 is the same above and below the horizontal plane ..! passing through the pinion axis 22.
The peg 118 is organized so as, in the vicinity of each end of its arcuate movement, to come into engagement with the stop 109 or 110, and consequently to move the valve 99 away from its seat, in order to allow an unimpeded exhaust, by moving connecting rod 106 to the right when the pin completes the last

nth part of its arc displacement. Shortly after beginning its return movement in either direction, pin 118 exits engagement of stop 109 (110) and spring 103 is free to move the stop valve again. exhaust control towards its seat, to restrict the exhaust.
Therefore, during the middle and most important portion of the arching movement of the pin 118, in either direction, and the corresponding movement of the arm 19, the valve 99 is controlled by the spring, 103 to restrict the discharge of the exhaust fluid from the inactive end of the working cylinder 70, and thereby retard the movement of the piston 71.
At this time, the pin 118 does not communicate movement to the valve 99, but moves only in the U-slot, 107, which is allowed by the necessary pivoting movement of the connecting rod 106 on the axis 102. '. The tension provided by the spring washer 104 'prevents the connecting rod 106 from falling back on its own during movement of the pin 118 from the position of FIG.
4 to that of fig. 7 and thus cause the ankle to function only in the upper half of the U-slot 107.
The point adjacent to each end of the arcuate movement of the ankle 118, and therefore the corresponding point, near each end of the reciprocating movement of the arm 19, where the ankle engages the stop 109 or 110 to move the valve 99 in its unimpeded exhaust position, can be modified by adjusting the stops 109 and 110.
In their positions shown, these stops project the same distance into the ends of the U-shaped slot, so that, with the machine parts proportioned and arranged as shown, the valve 99 is actuated so as to allow unimpeded exhaust the same distance from each end of the stroke of the arm 19 and from each end of the stroke of the piston 71.

As shown in the drawings, the adjustment of the stops 109 and 110 is such that the unimpeded escape past the valve 99 occurs shortly before the die parts come into contact in closing and little time before the die parts come into contact. before the ejection means are actuated during the opening of the die.
Starting with the die closed, as shown in fig.l, the general operation of the machine is as follows.
At this time, the valve handle 91 is in the "die closed" position of Fig. 9, so that pressurized air, occupying the bottom of cylinder 70, keeps the die closed, while the pin 118 maintains the control valve 99 in the position of FIG. 4, to allow free exhaust from the top of cylinder 70.
The ejection means are returned and the spring 62 of the arm is compressed, while the piston 50 has been raised after 1 injection of a molding.
By moving the valve handle 91 to its forward position ("die open" position, fig. 9) full pressure air enters the top of cylinder 70 to move piston 71 downward and begin movement. arm opening 19.
The first part of this movement allows the spring 62 to relax and the nozzle 48 to separate from the closed die.
The tabs 60 then come into engagement with the ends of their slots and the parts of the die are separated. During this movement of the arm 19, the pin 118 moves to the position of fig. 5, so that the valve 99 is pushed towards its seat by its spring, but not to the point where the restriction of the valve occurs. exhaust current. As the arm 19 continues to move, and soon after the die opens, the valve 99 moves rapidly to its exhaust restriction position as shown in fig.5.
At this time, the pin 118 leaves contact with the stopper 109 and the valve 99 is fully under the control of the spring. 103 and exhaust fluid is released.

charging, which serves to keep the valve in the restricted flow position of fig. 5, that is to say with the valve slightly removed from its seat.
Note, therefore, that since the exhaust stream from cylinder 70 is not retarded until after the die opens, the full pressure of compressed air, acting at the top of piston 71, is effective for open the matrix.
As a result, the movable part 18 of the die begins its opening movement suddenly and at a relatively high speed, to effectively "break" the die.
As soon as the valve 99 moves to the "restriction" position (fig. 5) and thereby retards the movement of the piston 71, all parts including arm 19 and die part 18, move at a reduced, substantially uniform speed. This situation continues until immediately before ejection occurs. Shortly before the ejector bar screws 68 'come into engagement with the post 21, the peg 118 engages the stopper 110 as shown in fig.6. The continuation of the movement of the ankle rapidly moves the valve 99 into the free or unimpeded exhaust position, so as to determine the total application, to the arm 19, of the power acting on the piston 71, just before the release. operation of the ejection means.
When the ejection means are actuated (fig.3), the pin 118 moves the valve 99 into the final position of fig. 7. Thus the ejection is carried out while the full fluid pressure acts on the opening mechanism of the die. This increases the speed of the mechanism and of the die part 18 and hence ensures the complete and efficient ejection of the molding.
Due to the delayed speed at which part 18 of the die, and its operating mechanism, move during the major portion of this opening movement, the increased speed of the members at the end of the opening movement is insufficient to cause an objectionable snap of the organs when the ejection mechanism is actuated. If the speed of

piston 71 had not been checked, or its operation dampened as described, but that the full exhaust of cylinder 70 had been allowed during the entire opening movement of the die, the active members acquire such a living force, during this movement, that there would be a snap of the organs which is extremely subject to objection when the ejection means are actuated.
The reverse operation of the operation which has been described above occurs when the die is closed, as a consequence of the movement of the valve handle 91 into the "die closed" position of Fig. 9. This causes full pressure air to enter the bottom of cylinder 70, which had been completely vented to atmosphere by valve 99 at the end of the die opening movement. At this point, valve 99 occupies the "unrestricted" position of Fig. 7, which ensures free escape of fluid into the upper end of cylinder 70.
At the beginning of the return movement of the arm 19, the ejector means leave the engagement with the post 21 and the peg 118 moves in a clockwise direction towards the position of FIG. 6, to allow the valve 99 to be moved towards its seat by its spring, but not to its position of "restriction :, By the continuation of the movement of the arm 19, the spring 103 returns the valve in its restricted position of Fig. 6 and the pin 118 leaves engagement with the stopper 110. Thus the closing movement of the members begins rapidly, due to the fact that the parts are subjected to all the pressure. force of the fluid pressure entering the cylinder 70.
With the valve 99 in the restricted position all of the members continue their closing movement at a delayed, substantially uniform rate, until immediately before the engagement of the die halves. Shortly before this occurs, the pin 118 engages the stopper 109 .. as shown in FIG. 5. Further movement of the pin quickly moves valve 99 to the free exhaust position to thereby determine the application to arm 19 of.

all the fluid pressure acting on the piston 71, just before the engagement of the die parts.
When the die parts come into contact, and the arm 19 moves to its final position of fig.l, the pin 118 moves the valve 99 to its initial position of fig.
4; meanwhile spring 62 is compressed and nozzle 48 engages the closed die to repeat the molding operation.
The closing of the die thus being effected with application of all the fluid pressure to the operating mechanism, beginning shortly before the die parts come into engagement, the movable part 18 of the die is brought against the fixed part at a relatively high speed. As a result, the die parts fit precisely and firmly to each other.
In a manner analogous to the action which occurs during the die opening operation, the retarded speed at which die portion 18 and the operating mechanism occurs in front of the major portion of the closing movement. of the die, prevents the establishment of a speed of movement of the members, u the end of the closing movement, such as would cause a snap subject to objection of the parts of the die when they come into engagement.
As has been explained, the load on valve 99, and thus the speed of movement of piston 71 and arm 19, during the intermediate portion of each stroke, can be changed by adjusting plug 96. This plug can be rotated outwards so as to increase the speed of the arm 19, or else inwards to reduce the speed, in order to obtain the desired speed of movement of the organs in both directions, without noise. or snap.
