La présente invention se rapporte à une nouvelle sa.'* pote qui est destinée aux véhicules automobiles et à des applications similaires; en raison de son caractère spécial et des avantages qu'elle offre, elle est désignée pour rem- placer les modéles ordinaires: d'autant plus que son fonc- tionnement mérite le qualificatif d'automatique; son montage s'effectue par l'emploi d'un nouveau dispositif d'armature, étant à la fois capable d'extensibilité et de mouvement en branches de ciseaux; la forme prise par celles-ci corres- pond à un mouvement mécanique, en particulier, par l'emploi d'air comprimé avec commande qui se fait avec facilité de l'intérieur du véhicule;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig. 1, donne la vue latérale d'une automobile avec adaptation de la capote, représentée schématiquement et à la position relevée; on y remarque le mécanisme actionné par la commande manoeuvrée de l'intérieur du véhicule;
La fig. 2, montre latéralement la partie postérieure de l'automobile, en supposant sa capote à l'état replié et rentra ;
Enfin, la fig. 3, représente par projection en plan un détail de l'agencement de fixation servant à retenir la capote sur des montants ou une charpente de vitre pare-brise;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
bras de levier montant 4 placé à l'arrière du véhicule et articulé sur un pivot 5 prévu sur le support 6 qui fait par- tie d'un cylindre à air comprimé 7 dans lequel peut jouer en va et vient un piston 8;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
fig.
Comme on peut le voir, ce levier 21 est placé dans la voiture, à la commande de celle-ci, et il y est également prévu deux petits leviers 22 et 23, dont celui 22 tient un câble-tirette 24 pour l'actionnement de la soupape 10; alors, comme on l'a déjà dit, l'air comprimé est introduit dans le cylindre 7; tandis qu'un autre petit levier 23 rattaché à un autre câble-tirette 25, produit l'actionnement de la sou- pape 26, laquelle sert de décharge pour l'évacuation de l'air: d'où la conséquence de permettre au pi ston le retour à sa position du bas aux fins de plier le système de branches articulées en ciseaux qui constitue la monture de la capote. fonctionnement de la nouvelle capote;
Supposons que celle-ci ait été ramenée en arrière suivant indication de la fig. 2, pour la remonter on agira sur le levier 21, alors, par l'intervention de la barre 20 et du levier 19, le châs- sis 4 sera amené à sa position verticale en même temps que les organes attenants, ce qui réalisera la position indiquée par des traits pointillés en fig. 1 ; en second lieu on ac- tionnera le levier 22, ce qui produira l'ouverture de la soupape 11 et l'entrée d'air dans le cylindre 7, d'où résul- tera la'poussée sur le piston 8 lequel prendra la position indiquée à la fig. 1 par des traits pleins ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Conséquemment, au démontage de la capote, de façon analogue, d'abord, moyennant une manoeuvre manuelle de la broche 28, cette capote sera libérée de la fixation au chas- sis de la vitre 27 d'avant, puis , en agissant sur le levier 23, on fera sortir l'air du cylindre 7; sitôt,alors, le res- sort 12 par sa poussée sur le piston, le fera redescendre, entraînant ainsi avec lui le bras 13 et mettant en jeu le système de branches de ciseaux 3 pour produire le ploiement à la forme indiquée en fig. 1;

Ferfections in convertible tops for motor vehicles and other applications. @
The present invention relates to a new sa. '* Pote which is intended for motor vehicles and similar applications; because of its special character and the advantages it offers, it is designed to replace ordinary models: all the more so since its operation deserves the qualification of automatic; its assembly is carried out by the use of a new frame device, being capable of both extensibility and movement in scissor branches; the shape taken by them corresponds to a mechanical movement, in particular, by the use of compressed air with control which is easily carried out from inside the vehicle;
if necessary, the new soft top can be fitted and dismantled without direct human intervention.
The new device which, in addition to its convenience, is practical in all respects, satisfies a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a necessity which was very often manifested either in the event of rainy weather, or in other cases where it would have been necessary to be able to deploy the top with a certain speed; which was impossible to do instantaneously without the intervention of a combination as is in question here and thanks to which a favorable reception is assured to the new system not only by the drivers of the cars, but by the general public.
For greater clarity, the object of this invention has been shown in the accompanying drawings, which graphically embody the new soft top in one of the preferred embodiments, these drawings being given by way of illustration, but not limiting. To these drawings:
Fig. 1, gives the side view of an automobile with adaptation of the top, shown schematically and in the raised position; note the mechanism actuated by the control operated from inside the vehicle;
Fig. 2, shows the rear part of the automobile laterally, assuming its top in the folded state and retracted;
Finally, fig. 3, shows a plan projection of a detail of the fixing arrangement for retaining the soft top on uprights or a windshield window frame;
In these different views, the same elements or parts of the device have been designated by the same numbers.
It can be seen in these drawings that 1 designates the fabric of which the hood is made and which is placed on. sleepers or arches 2 (fig. 3) mounted on connecting rods articulated in extensible scissor branches 3; these (fig. 3) are formed of a multiplicity of segmental arms articulated between them and the extension operates the assembly, in the stretched state, of the top (depending on its entire length), a frame or carcass being thus provided to the latter, The and set of articulated branches has its base in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lever arm 4 placed at the rear of the vehicle and articulated on a pivot 5 provided on the support 6 which forms part of a compressed air cylinder 7 in which a piston 8 can play back and forth;
at this cylinder ends, on one side, the tube 9 which, when the valve 10 is open, gives access to the pressurized air delivered by the reservoir 11 (placed inside the vehicle); the whole allowing the rise of the piston 8 in its cylinder.
This piston 8 undergoes, as can be seen, the thrust from top to bottom of the spring 12, and it is joined to a frame arm 13 having an articulation in 14 at the location of its junction with another arm 13, the end of which attacked one of the articulated branches of the first pair of scissors; the other arm, which plays with it, ends at the pivot 16 at a fixed point from the top of the upright 4.
Under these conditions, if it is assumed that the piston 8 has been pushed by the spring 12 and thus descended into the bottom of the cylinder 7, the articulated branches of the extensible bucket system will be bent, as indicated in dotted lines on the left. fig. 1; therefore, by opening the key 10, the compressed air will be put into action which will cause the piston to rise, and, with it, the two arms 13 and 13 'in a straight line extension of one another; hence the bringing into play of the first pair of birds, which performs its extension and transmits it for the purpose of deploying the hood thus mowed, as shown in continuous lines in fig. 1.
To give reinforcement to the hood in its rear part, a hoop 17 is provided which is pivotally mounted on the pivot 5; this pivot provides 1 $ articulation for easy movements of the upright and the hoop 17: which turns (see in figs 1 and) the whole group of branches of scissors with the corresponding fabric surface of the hood 1 ; then, the folded group fits into a receiver 18 formed at the rear of the car, as can be seen at @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
fig. 2, where it takes place in perfect order, without prejudice to the design of the bodywork.
By the effect of the rotation, the upright 4 to which is fixed a rod 4 'joined to a lever 19 which itself attacks the bar 20 placed in suspension from the manual control lever 21, must take when we act on the latter, a second position where this upright 4 and the frame are either mounted or brought back.
As can be seen, this lever 21 is placed in the car, at the command of the latter, and there are also provided two small levers 22 and 23, of which the one 22 holds a cable-pull 24 for the actuation of valve 10; then, as has already been said, the compressed air is introduced into the cylinder 7; while another small lever 23 attached to another cable-pull 25, produces the actuation of the valve 26, which serves as a relief for the evacuation of the air: hence the consequence of allowing the pi ston the return to its bottom position in order to bend the system of articulated scissor branches which constitutes the frame of the hood. operation of the new convertible top;
Let us suppose that this one has been brought back as indicated in FIG. 2, to reassemble it, we will act on the lever 21, then, by the intervention of the bar 20 and the lever 19, the frame 4 will be brought to its vertical position at the same time as the adjoining components, which will achieve the position indicated by dotted lines in fig. 1; secondly, the lever 22 will be actuated, which will produce the opening of the valve 11 and the entry of air into the cylinder 7, from which will result the thrust on the piston 8 which will take the position shown in fig. 1 by solid lines;
from the movement of the bars 13 and 13 'will result that of the scissor branches which will quickly perform their extension, thus relaxing the fabric 1 of the hood, which will then be
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
attached from the front to the window frame of the windshield 27, by means of a pin 28 obeying the pressure of a spring, with application against the last arch of the convertible top, which will thus be adjusted and fixed in square.
Consequently, when the top is removed, in a similar fashion, first, by means of a manual operation of the spindle 28, this top will be released from the attachment to the chas- sis of the front window 27, then, by acting on the lever 23, the air will be released from cylinder 7; Immediately, then, the spring 12 by its thrust on the piston, will make it go down again, thus dragging the arm 13 with it and bringing into play the system of scissor branches 3 to produce the bending to the shape indicated in fig. 1;
finally, by actuating the corresponding lever, the whole will be returned to its receptacle 18, therefore, it will return to the original position indicated in fig. 2. There is no doubt that in the practice of this invention any modifications relating to the construction and the shapes of the parts described may be made; just as we can choose another convertible top control mechanism, always without departing from the fundamental principles, the explanation of which has been clearly given in the descriptive text.
