<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Arc lamp with carbon electrode for image projection.
We know that the coals of an arc lamp wear unevenly whether it is the negative electrode or the positive electrode. We tried to compensate for this uneven wear of the rods by giving the negative electrode a smaller diameter than that of the positive carbon, since we had, as to the size of the latter, to take into account the intensity of the current used. . Finally, in order not to have to use coals of a diameter that were too different from each other, we had also tried to compensate for this uneven wear of the electrodes by adjusting the advancement of the coals differently.
To do this; a thread was provided for the advancement rod of the negative electrode, the inclination of which is greater than that of the thread which the advancement rod of the positive electrode comprises.
However, in the case of coals with a high luminous intensity, the wear of the electrodes varies, depending on the load, as much as is necessary in the lamps in which it is not necessary.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
re-burn coals at high power and at different loads, take absolutely measures such that the advancement of the electrodes can, at any time, be regulated according to the different regimes.
Figs. 1 and 2 of the attached drawing represent such an installation, respectively in vertical section and in horizontal section, while Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 show the application of this device to a lamp with arc.
Between the control shaft 1 for the pencil holder and the motor shaft 2 is interposed an intermediate control device whose engagement and disengagement can be adjusted as required, this device being designed as follows: The motor shaft 2 comprises a fine vi blood 3 which controls a helical wheel 4 provided with a pawl b movable around an axis 55 and engaging in a toothed wheel, for example in the internal toothed wheel 6 which, by the intermediary of a coupling member, is connected to the axis 7 and the movement of which is thus transmitted, by means of s bevel wheels 8 and 9, to the shaft 1 controlling the electrode holder rod .
When, by the rotation of the worm 3, the helical wheel 4 begins to rotate, the pawl 5 is driven in this movement and ipso facto drives the toothed wheel 6 comprising for example an internal toothing. this rotation therefore determines a rotary movement of the shaft 1 and thus a movement of the re spective electrode holder.
However, this device would give, as regards the shaft 1, only an absolutely constant number of revolutions determined by the speed of rotation of the control motor. In order to obtain, for the different degrees of wear of each kind of carbon that one wishes to use, a different advance, the invention provides special members s allowing to temporarily disengage the pawl 5 by relative to the toothed wheel 6, so that despite the rotational movement of the helical wheel 4, the shaft 1 is stopped. Said disengagement of the pawl 5 takes place as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The axis'? carries at its front part a sleeve 10 on which slides a threaded member II comprising a cam disc 12.
The threaded member 11 can, by moth of the guide key 13, move on the sleeve 10 only in the longitudinal direction, and is provided with an adjustment device in the form of a button 15 whose rotation determines a displacement of the threaded member 11 'and, with the latter, of the cam disc 12, this displacement occurring longitudinally on the sleeve 10.
The disc-cam 12 can, in this movement, come to meet the spindle 16 which, by means of an arm sl 'I, is carried by the axis 55 on the other end of which is wedged the pawl 5, of so that by acting on this spindle 16, one operates by this oscillating movement around the axis 55 the disengagement of the pawl 5 with respect to the internal toothed wheel 6. The moment of disengagement and of the new engagement of the pawl is determined by the respective position of di sk-cam 12, relative to spindle 16. The position of di sk-cam 12 can be adjusted beforehand by turning knob 15.
When, during the rotation of the helical wheel 4, the spindle 16 comes to meet the heel 18 of the cam disc 12, the pawl is disengaged, while the latter engages again, relative to the toothed wheel 6, when said spindle 16 arrives at the place designated by 19. Thus, in the position of the di sque shown in the drawing, the movement of the shaft 1 is therefore only interrupted for some instants; if, on the other hand, the duration of the interruption of movement of shaft 1 must be longer, di sque 12 must be moved to spindle 16; from then on, spindle 16 will rotate on the disc, until end 20 of spindle 16 slides off the inclined surface of the disc.
At this moment, the pawl 5 engages again in the toothed wheel 6 and the rotational movement can again be transmitted normally. It goes without saying that the pawl 5 comprises a spring 24, thanks to which the pawl engages in the teeth of the wheel 6; when disengaging the pawl ,. the action of this spring 24 must therefore be overcome.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
With a view to making it possible to also control said shaft 1 by hand, the axis 7 consists of two parts comprising between them s a coupling device 21, either with teeth, or with claw s etc. making the normal operation of the device, the 'two coupling plates are brought closer to each other by means of a pressure spring, 22, so that the rotational movement of the wheel 6 is trandsmie to shaft 1. Now, by pushing on the lever 23, part 7a of the axis is moved, which separates the two plates from one another, so that the rotational movement determined by the engine can no longer be transmitted.
Therefore, the movement of axis 7 can only be obtained by hand, by means of button 23.
Figs. 3 and 4 represent the application in a lamp of this advancement device for the positive and negative electrodes s. As shown in the drawing, the two control devices are mounted separately on the front wall of the projector, while s fig. 5 and 6 show an installation in which the two control devices are combined in one. envelope. It is advantageous to mount the electric motor directly on the latter.
