La zone a représente le oombustibla à distiller;
La zone b : le combustible en distillation;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PROCESS FOR DISTILLATION OF COAL AND OTHER SIMILAR MATERIALS.
The distillation of the. coal for the production of lighting gas is exothermic. The sole purpose of blackmailing distillation retorts is therefore to maintain the mass at the minimum temperature necessary to bring about this distillation.
In the current practice of heating oil in a vacuum, by outdoor fireplaces, the calories lost by radiation, due to the slow transmission through the walls of the. retort and to. through the part of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the mass already distilled, in order to bring the core to its minimum temperature, as well as the calories carried away by the fumes, absorb most of the heat involved,
In the known vertical retort furnaces with continuous distillation, the use of heat from the. actual distillation is less than 20% of the available quota.
This represents a considerable waste of fuel which the present invention aims to eliminate.
The present invention relates to a process for the distillation of coal or any other similar material, consisting in the use of a retort or of a retort, which are vertical and continuously distilled; in this retort or chamber is carried out the distillation of the coal or any other solid matter giving a fuel as a residue of distillation, by production of the heat necessary for the distillation inside the retort or of the chamber by burning there , a small part of the fuel,
In the accompanying drawing are shown two figures, thanks to which, in Pig.l, we describe the general principle of the invention, in Fig.2, we give, in schematic form, one of the embodiments of the 'invention.
In Fig. 1. starting from the top:
Zone a represents the oombustibla to be distilled;
Zone b: the fuel in distillation;
The zone has the residual fuel from the distillation.
To obtain the heating necessary for the distillation, one will introduce continuously in the hall part of the zone c. through orifices f made for this purpose in the walls of the retort, an oxidizing gas (oxygen, air, mixture of oxygen and air or any other oxidizing gas)
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
quantity just necessary to obtain the heat to be used for the distillation and under a pressure plus or. less strong depending on the pressure existing inside the retort, the nature of the fuel left over from the distillation, the width and the height of the retort.
This oxidizing gas, combining with the fuel left over from the distillation, releases a heat inside the retort which, propagated by the combustion gases inside the distillation zone first, then the fuel. - tible to distill, allows and maintains this distillation.
This way of operating gives a calorific efficiency much higher than the currently employed method of heating the. retorts from the outside and leads to a saving of more than 2/3 of the fuel burnt to obtain the distillation% ion.
On the other hand, the material to be distilled being heated throughout its mass instead of being heated only by the walls of the retort, the distillation takes place more rapidly under a more uniform temperature and under better conditions.
The walls of the retort or of the distillation chamber will be insulated on the outside, in order to have the least possible heat loss,
The combustion gases will be collected at the same time as the distillation gases.
By using air as oxidizing gas, about 40% more gas is collected than with the external heating process with the introduction of steam at the base of the retort. This gas has a calorific value of between 3,000 and 3,500 calories,
Using oxygen yields about 10% more gas than with the outdoor heating process. This gas has a calorific value of between,000 and 4,800 calories.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It is possible, by using a mixture of oxygen and air proportioned according to the quality of the gas which one wishes to obtain, reooling from 10 to 40% more gas than with the external heating process and obtaining a gas having a calorific value between 3,000 and 4,000 calories.
If the needs of the operation require an increase in the calorific value, it is understood that one can introduce tars or mineral oils, preferably from distillation, in the hot zones of the retort, to subject them to a cracking, giving stable gases with high oalorific power. This cracking can also, if desired, be carried out outside the distillation retort.
To increase the thermal efficiency, provision is made for water vapor to be introduced at the base of the retort which, passing through it from bottom to top, is charged, passing through zone c, with the calories contained in the retort. the distillation residues and transports these calories to zones b and a, thus supplementing the quantities of heat released by combustion.
In Fig. 2. a loading device, which can be of any known system, is shown in m; through the duct h passes the gas produced in the retort; below zone c, an extraction device g has been indicated.
The oxidizing gas supply tubes are shown at f-f; it is also possible to introduce said gases by means of a pipe j; in Fig. 2. this tubing is metallic, double-walled and water-cooled, but it is understood that its mode of construction can be any.
We appeared in zones a. and b, on the one hand, and in zone c, on the other hand, a tube ± which allows the introduction of heavy oils, tars, etc., to produce by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
oraoking gases with high calorific value.
Finally, it is possible to advantageously admit an injection of steam at the base of the retort by means of the openings 1.
Ducts f-f and 1 terminate approximately one meter above the top of the extraction system shown in g; this approximate height has been planned in such a way that the steam introduced at the base of the oornue can take almost all of the calories oontained in the residues of the distillation, to transport the said calories into the distillation zone, thus providing an extra the heat given off by combustion; this device also has the advantage of allowing the residues of the distillation to come into contact with the apparatus, eg traction at a temperature which is not dangerous for the metal parts which constitute it.
In summary, given the coal or other solid material to be distilled and leaving after distillation a combustible residue, the invention consists, by employing a continuous distillation chamber or chamber, in obtaining the necessary heat (to produce and maintain this distillation) inside the retort or chamber in the actual mass of the material being distilled, by introducing into the mass of the combustible residue an oxidizing gas which only burns a small part of this residual fuel distillation,
This process has the double advantage:
a) in comparison with the current methods of external heating of the retort, to allow a significant saving, more than 2/3 of the fuel burnt to obtain the distillation, b) to allow, by the heating of the. mass subjected to this treatment, more regular distillation, under
