<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Divers modes de réalisation de l'invention sont représentés schématiquement et à titre d'exemples non limitatifs aux dessins ci-joints dans lesquels : fig.l est une vue en plan d'une forme de dispositifs de commande des ailerons et battants d'ailes; fig. 2 en est une élévation latérale et fig. 3 une élévation de face, comportant toutefois une variante du dispositif de commande;
fig.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
/
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

"Aircraft upgrades"
The present invention relates to the construction and control of aircraft, and it relates to heavier-than-air aircraft, such as airplanes, hydroplanes and the like.
According to the present invention, the aircraft comprises two main airfoils which will be referred to hereinafter under the name of wings and which are arranged in a stepped position in front and behind the normal center of gravity, a common device serving to operate the side balance control flaps or ailerons which, while controlling
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
lateral balance, also serve as risers to control the longitudinal balance of the device. It can be seen that with this arrangement it is possible to dispense with the conventional assembly normally used and consisting of the combination of a tail plane and an elevator.
In addition to the ailerons, the wings preferably include central articulated wing flaps constituting, on the trailing edge of each wing, a fairly considerable part of the surface of the wing, these flaps being susceptible to move so as to exert on the apparatus a braking effect on the air by increasing their angle of resistance to the wind. Preferably, means are provided to cause the central articulated wing flaps to move to different degrees so that they can act as aerodynamic brakes or as devices giving the wings a curved lower surface to increase or decrease their climbing efficiency.
The device for actuating the ailerons may consist of a pilot operated hand control wheel which can rotate freely within or around a vertical control column or lever, the arrangement being such that the rotation of the steering wheel operates the ailerons to control the lateral balance, while the oscillation of the column or the control lever forwards or backwards controls the longitudinal balance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In a variant, the longitudinal control and the lateral control of the machine are obtained by actuating the ailerons on the front wing and on the rear wing by means of a lever and a shaft mounted by a universal joint. on a shaft so that the movement of the lever back and forth controls the longitudinal balance, and the lateral movement of the lever controls the lateral balance.
The central articulated wing flaps can be arranged so as to be able to perform a simultaneous movement with the ailerons, in order to help maintain the longitudinal balance and also to constitute aerodynamic brakes.
Various embodiments of the invention are shown schematically and by way of nonlimiting examples in the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a plan view of one form of control devices for the ailerons and wing flaps ; fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof and FIG. 3 a front elevation, however comprising a variant of the control device;
fig. 4 is a side view of an airplane showing the arrangement of the wings, while FIG. 5 and 6 are views of other variants of the control device FIG. 5 being a schematic view in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
perspective and fig. 6 a side elevation of one form of wing flap control device for effecting air braking and increasing or decreasing the camber of such wing flaps, as well as for providing an independent device for the longitudinal control.
In the example shown in fig.l and 2,1 shows the main front wing and 2 the rear main wing, 3 and 4 being respectively the left wing and the right wing. front, and 5 and 6 the left wing and the rear right wing. 7 is the front central articulated wing quarter and 8 is the rear central articulated wing quarter.
The mechanism for operating the ailerons and flaps of the front and rear wings, for the control of the longitudinal and lateral balance, comprises a control wheel 9 actuated by the pilot and able to rotate freely around the vertical column or. control lever 10 normally provided, and which carries a suitably toothed bevel gear 11 meshing with a similar bevel gear 12 attached to the upper end of a hollow shaft or sleeve 13 surrounding substantially the entire length of the vertical control column 10, but being able to turn freely around this column.
The lower end of this sleeve 13 carries a similar bevel wheel 14 meshing with two other bevel wheels 15, 16 mounted one on each side of this wheel 14 and at the ex-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lower end of the vertical control column 10.
These bevel wheels 15,16 are respectively fixed on sleeves 17,18 which surround a transverse shaft 19, around which they can rotate freely. The lower end of this column 10 is rigidly fixed by a reinforcing sleeve to the aforementioned transverse shaft (around its middle part), this shaft being provided with suitable bearings, at its ends or near its ends, to ensure the position of the control mechanism relative to the whole of the apparatus, and to make it possible to impart a rotational movement to this transverse shaft by the oscillation of the vertical control column forwards and backwards to control the balance longitudinal.
The transverse shaft 19 carries at its ends, by means of arms 19 ', two links 20, 21, the link 20 being articulated on the lower surface of the front wing flap 7, and the link 21 being articulated in a manner analogous to the rear wing flap 8, these rods 20,21 transmitting the desired movement to the front and rear central articulated wing flaps 7 and 8, from the movement of the vertical control column 10. This movement, which is an oscillation of this column forwards and backwards, independently or movement of the control 9 for the control of the ailerons 3, 4, 5 and 6, contributes to ensuring the control of the longitudinal balance of the machine. The balance
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
longitudinal is also controlled by the movement of ailerons 5,4,5 and 6 by means of the following mechanism.
At its end furthest from the bevel wheel 15, the sleeve 17 carries two rods 22,23, the rod 22 terminating in an articulated connection on the / lower surface of the fin 3, and the rod 23 being connected to 'a manner similar to the fin 6, that is to say that the sleeve 17 is connected to the left front fin 3t to the right rear fin. The sleeve 18 comprises, in a similar manner, two rods 24,25 articulated respectively on the lower surface of the ailerons 4 and 5, that is to say on the front right wing and on the rear wing. from the left.
The rods 22, 23, 24 and 25 transmit the movement of the flywheel 9 to the ailerons with the double purpose of stabilizing the lateral balance of the machine during flight and of helping to ensure, or to fully control the longitudinal balance. machine, as will be described below. It should be noted that if, for some unforeseen reasons, the articulated wing flaps 7 and 8 can no longer be controlled, the ailerons allow this to fully control the longitudinal balance of the machine, as well as the lateral balance. However, if the ailerons no longer move to be controlled, the wing flaps 7 and 8 can control the longitudinal balance of the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In order for lateral balance to be maintained, it will be assumed that the apparatus tilts or turns to the left side; to reestablish lateral balance, ailerons 3 and 5 must be lowered and ailerons 4 and 6 raised, so as to give the aircraft greater lifting power on the left side. For this purpose, the flywheel 9 is rotated in the direction of clockwise movement, which causes the sleeve 17 to turn via the bevel wheels 11, 12, 14 and 15, the connecting rod 22 thus being thrust and the rod 23 pulled, so as to lower the fin 3 and raise the fin 6. At the same time, the sleeve 18 is rotated (by the bevel wheels 11, 12, 14 and 16) so as to pull on the two rods 24.25 to raise aileron 4 and lower aileron 5 in order to restore the machine's lateral balance.
A reverse rotation of the steering wheel 9 will cause a reverse movement of the front and rear fins.
If it is desired to ensure the longitudinal balance of the aircraft, the front and rear ailerons and the front and rear wing flaps are actuated simultaneously. This is obtained by an oscillation of the vertical control column 10 around the axis of the shaft 19. For example, if one wishes to raise the front of the apparatus, the control column 10 is pulled out. back. This movement imparts a rotational movement to both the cross shaft 19 and the sleeves 17 and 18 so that all of the connecting rods 20,21,22,23,24 and 25 are
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
operated. The link 20 is pulled back so as to pull the wing bar 7 downwards, and the link 21 is pulled forward so as to push the wing flap 8 up.
At the same time, the rods 22 and 24 are actuated so as to lower the ailerons 3 and 4 and the rods 23 and 25 are actuated so as to raise the ailerons 5 and 6. It can therefore be seen that the ailerons and the wing d The front wing are lowered, while the ailerons and the rear wing flap are raised, so that the aircraft's longitudinal balance is restored.
In order to effect the braking on the air independently of the longitudinal operation of the apparatus, laterally or longitudinally, a separate lever 26 is rotatably mounted at 27 on the framework of the apparatus. The lever 26 is arranged to move on an arm 28 in the form of a quadrant so as to be able to occupy several positions and two links 29,30 are fixed to this lever, the link 29 being connected to one of the arms of a lever. elbow 31, the other arm of which is connected to a link 32 articulated on the lower surface of the front wing flap 7, while the elbow lever 31 carries, mounted on its pivot, a second elbow lever 33 to which is connected the rod 20 leading to the transverse shaft 19.
The second link 30 of the lever 26 is similarly coupled by an elbow lever 34 and a link 35 to the lower surface of the rear wing flap.

laughter 8, the bent lever 34 carrying, mounted like the bent lever 31, a second bent lever 36 to which the rod 21 is connected, the levers 33 and 36 being articulated on the frame of the apparatus.
The arrangement is such that for a slight forward movement of the lever 26, the articulated wing flaps 7 and 8 are both raised to ensure maximum machine speed. However, if the lever 26 is moved back, the wing flaps 7 and 8 are forced to move so as to give the wings a stronger camber to increase their lifting power, while the full movement of the lever 26 towards the wing. The rear lowers wing flaps 7 and 8 so that they act as aero brakes.
A variant of the device for controlling air braking and for varying the camber of the wings is shown in FIG. 3.
With this device it is useful, in order to obtain a greater braking effect on the air and a greater variation of the airfoils, to allow the ailerons and the wing quarters to act as a single unit in the same direction on the two wings, while allowing the ailerons to act independently of the wing flaps to control the lateral balance of the machine. Accordingly, the end bearings in which the cross shaft 19 is mounted are /
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
arranged so as to be able to effect, to an appreciable degree, from the vertical, an equal rocking movement forwards and backwards, with respect to the frame of the apparatus.
This is achieved by mounting the shaft 19 on arms 38 fixed to a second transverse shaft 39 which can rotate freely in bearings fixed to the frame of the apparatus.
Shaft 39 is rotated by means of a lever operated arm 40 (not shown) mounted in a convenient position near the pilot and may include any suitable latch or stopper of a type known for. lock it on the frame of the device and release it in order to allow its movement, such as for example the locking device used for an automobile handbrake. In addition, the operation of this hand lever or similar device could also be used to effect the braking on the air (by any appropriate intermediate mechanical movement) acting on other articulated wing flaps independent of those which have been. described above, less movement of the hand lever varying the camber of the wings and the angle of incidence.
By tilting the arm 40, the shaft 39 is rotated, which causes the entire control column to tilt, in its entirety, that is to say the shaft 19 and the sleeves 17 and 18, this consequently causing the movement of the connecting rods 20,21,22,23,24 and 25 and this movement
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
for example having the effect of raising the ailerons 3, 4 and the wing flap 7, and lowering the ailerons 5,6 and the wing flap 8 ,, or vice versa.
It is naturally understood that instead of an oscillating movement of the whole of the control column forwards and backwards, like that which is described above, it is possible to arrange the end bearings of the cross shaft in such a way that they can effect, to an appreciable degree, an equal movement up and down in relation to the frame of the apparatus, so as to raise and lower the assembly. the control column by printing a movement corresponding to the rods, which would then be mounted vertically.
Another variant of the control device, particularly applicable to light airplanes, is shown in FIG. 5, in which the vertical control column 41 is fixed to a longitudinal base shaft 42 mounted by a universal joint on a transverse beam 53 by means of a universal or ball bolt 43 which is arranged so as to be able to move freely between two bearings 44 integral with the base shaft 42. The base shaft 42 passes between two front and rear sliding guides 45 and 46 respectively, ,, these guides being fixed to the frame of the device.
A double-ended control lever 47 is attached to the front end of the base shaft and a similar control lever 48
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
is mounted on the rear end of this base shaft 42, cables 49 and 50 being respectively fixed to these levers 47 and 48 and passing over guide pulleys 51,52 to end in the front and rear fins 3, 4 and 5 , 6, the axes of the hinges of these fins being indicated in phantom lines.
The hinge bolt 43 passes through a transverse spreader 53 to which it is fixed and which is / pivotally mounted at one end on a sliding support 54 in which it is retained by a pin 55, this support being carried by the frame of the 'apparatus. The other end of said lifter 53 is forked at 56 to embrace a vertical rod or a vertical tube 57 fixed to the frame of the device and serving as a position guide for the lifter 53.
The lifter can be brought up and down by the operation of a lever 58 via a rod 59, the lever 58 being articulated at one end by means of a pivot 60. 61 is the setting device. position of the lever, this device being constituted by a member in the form of a plate carried by the frame of the apparatus and comprising several projections serving as stops with which a plate 62 carried by the lower surface of the lever 58 can engage.
The control device operates as follows to ensure first the longitudinal maneuver, second the lateral maneuver, and thirdly the braking.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
age on the air and the arch of the wings. The lever 41 is oscillated forward or backward about its pivot so as to cause the base shaft 42 to rise or fall in the slide guides 45,46, this shaft driving the control levers 47,48, which, via cables 49 and 50, actuate ailerons 3, 4, 5 and 6, for example to raise the front ailerons and lower the rear ailerons, or vice versa.
If the lever 41 is oscillated transversely, the control levers 47, 48 are also moved so as to move the front ailerons in opposite directions to each other, as well as the rear ailerons. which controls the lateral maneuver of the machine.
The air braking and the camber variation are effected by moving lever 58 up or down, which causes similar movement of the rudder bar 53. The rudder bar 53 carries cables 63,64 which pass over pulleys to end. respectively to the central articulated wing flaps, front and rear, 7,8 and by which the latter are caused to move so as to increase the camber or the angle of incidence, or are moved fully in order to perform the braking on air.
If desired, the ailerons of the two wings can extend substantially over the entire width of the wing, so that the central articulated wing flaps can be omitted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
A variant of. control mode of the central articulated wing flaps 7, 8 is shown in fig. 6, and it makes it possible to vary the camber or the angle of incidence, braking on the air and maneuvering length of the machine. In this variant, two levers are provided: a large lever 65 and a small lever 66, the large lever being articulated at 67 and the small lever or lever being articulated at 68. * A suitable lock / stop device 69 serves to lock each lever , the large lever moving on a quadrant 70 and the small lever on a quadrant 71 carried by the large lever. On the large lever are mounted two toothed wheels 72.75, the axis of the wheel 72 located above the pivot 67 at the point of articulation of the small lever, and the axis of the wheel 73 located above. of pivot 67.
The wheel 72 carries near its periphery a rod 74 which is connected by an elbow lever 75 to the upper part of the rear wing leaf 8, while the wheel 73 is connected to the lower surface of the front wing leaf. 7 by a similar rod 76 and an angled lever 77.
The operation of this variant of the control device is as follows: To perform braking on air, the large lever 65 is pulled back by a movement of a large amplitude, this lever driving with it the small lever 66 and the 72,73 cogwheels that it carries.
This movement pushes the link 76 forward so as to lower
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
the wing flap 7, and at the same time it pushes the rod 74 so as to lower the rear wing flap 8, to brake on the air. A smaller amplitude movement of the large lever will vary the camber or the angle of incidence. To maneuver the device lengthwise; the small lever 66 is actuated independently of the large lever 65. This movement turns the toothed wheel 72; and this wheel, meshing with wheel 73, turns the latter in the opposite direction.
If, for example, the small lever is pushed forward, it turns the wheel 72 counterclockwise (as indicated by the arrow) so as to turn the wheel 73 clockwise. -the movement of the hands of a watch. This rotation of the wheels 72, 73 causes the lifting of the wing leaf 8 and the lowering of the wing leaf 7, which ensures the longitudinal operation of the device. A movement of the netit lever 66 in the opposite direction still ensures the longitudinal maneuver of the device, but in the opposite direction.
The use of the small lever for the purpose and by the method which has just been described can be modified, the movement of this lever making it possible to perform the desired and corresponding maneuver of the wing flap or of the wing flaps. fixed to the posterior principal plane only, without simultaneously causing any opposite movement corresponding to that of the wing flaps articulated on the anterior principal plane (or vice versa).

<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
In such a variant, it would not be necessary to use the various toothed wheels meshing with each other mentioned above, and the desired movement imparted to the traction and thrust links mentioned above could be effected by fixing these links. to any suitable part of the large and small lever respectively, for the purpose just described.
When, in a particular type of construction, wing tips of large central section form part of the body of the apparatus for fixing the front and rear wings or main planes, these large central parts could each comprise a flap. hinged, so that it might not be necessary to use other additional hinged flaps on these parts or on the fenders.
For small types of flying machines the muscular force of the pilot will be sufficient to actuate these levers, but for large types the force could be transmitted to these levers by a suitable application of some compressed air servo motor.
If desired, although it will be understood that this is not necessary, a small tail plane can be added to help provide longitudinal stability.
