<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Vehicle identification device.
The present invention relates to a device allowing the identification of vehicles, in particular motor cars.
When two cars have to pass each other at night, their drivers have no indication as to the type of vehicle (cars, trucks, buses, etc.) they are going to pass, especially since the lighting devices (lights position, dipped beam headlights, "large headlights") with which they are fitted, leave and even completely submerge the cars in the shade, which makes it impossible to determine their size, which can result in serious accidents. In addition, the registration numbers of these vehicles are completely invisible.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks. To this end, the invention provides that a light source is placed at the front of the vehicle so as to light all or part of the front face of the latter, and is placed outside the visual radius of the driver.
The invention further provides that the light beam emitted by the aforesaid source is directed, in addition to the front of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
vehicle, simultaneously sideways, on the ground in front of the driver and below the car. This embodiment therefore makes it possible to identify with certainty the type of vehicle to be crossed and to calculate the distance from which it is far from it, it also makes it possible to immediately read the registration number of the vehicle to be crossed; moreover, thanks to the side lighting, it makes it possible to easily read the indications of the signposts while moving, to cross or pass vehicles or obstacles in the road in complete safety, and to identify with certainty the nature of the shoulders.
The appended drawings show by way of nonlimiting example one embodiment of the invention. This extends to the various original features of the arrangement shown,
Fig.l is a front view of an automobile provided with the identification device according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of an automobile fitted with an anti-fog lighting device.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the identification device according to the invention.
The identification device according to the invention comprises a first light source 2 (see fig.3) mounted, for example, on the bumper 3 of the automobile, and housed in the space delimited by said bumper and the front of the car radiator. In this way this light source is completely outside the visual range of the driver.
The light beam emitted by the lamp 3 provided with a screen 4 intended to prevent the dazzling of passers-by or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drivers of other cars, is directed on the one hand towards the front face 5 of the automobile (fig.l) which alone is strongly lit, which makes it possible to easily read the registration number of this vehicle, to determine its type (car, bus, etc ...) even when the large headlights are on and consequently to appreciate with a little habit the distance to which we are, and on the other hand in front of the driver and laterally at a sufficient height (for example about 3 meters) to allow the driver to easily read in the middle of the night and on the move, the indications of the signposts, the house numbers and to identify the nature of the shoulders etc ...
In addition, this side lighting makes it possible to cross or pass with full safety all obstacles and even vehicles whose load exceeds the foreseeable width given by the indications of the statutory headlights.
The device according to the invention is completed by an anti-fog lamp 6 also attached, for example, to the bumper and provided with a screen 7 preventing dazzling of third parties. This lamp illuminates the ground on the one hand in front of the car (see fig. 2) over a distance varying with its orientation and its power which allows to progress in complete safety in the thickest fogs, and on the other hand below. car (see fig. 2) which is very useful for replacing a rear tire or for carrying out any other repair work.
It should also be noted that this device meets the new requirements of the Belgian regulation on traffic police, because it illuminates at less than 25 cm. from the outer edge
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
inside the car two points made luminous by reflection of the light emitted by the source 3.
This device can be advantageously supplemented according to the invention by the addition of light sources arranged so as not to disturb the occupants of the car and making visible, even when moving, the other faces of the vehicle.
It is obvious that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described simply by way of example but that it extends to any embodiment falling within the scope or spirit of the following claims.
