M E M O I R E BRUIEUR A CHARBON

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

M E M O I R E COAL BURNER
The present invention relates to coal burners used to burn very small caliber fuels,
Numerous devices of this type are already known, comprising, in general, a sheet steel fuel distribution hopper attached to a steel or cast iron burner, of massive, heavy and complex construction.
The design of these burners does not allow easy assembly by simple juxtaposition of identical elements
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
lightweight, as well as low cost mass production. On the other hand, the burner and the hoppers are not resistant to the high temperatures achieved, as well as to the gases given off by often incomplete combustion.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and provides a charcoal burner, with water circulation, entirely of cast iron, composed of similar transverse elements, of particularly simple construction.
The water circulation grate is covered with a layer of fuel of equal thickness at all points, in order to ensure perfect combustion and a long burner operating time without slagging.
For this purpose, the coal burner, object of the invention comprises a series of similar intermediate elements made of cast iron, with water circulation, the upper part of which forms a coal store, the middle part of the combustion chamber with inclined grates and the lower ashtray. The charcoal store, isolated by two charcoal registers, from the combustion chamber, allows the charcoal to descend naturally on the two V-shaped grids; by numerous side openings, so as to for, er at all points of the grate, a uniform layer of coal of the same thickness and thus achieve good combustion.
The front and rear elements of the burner allow a) = cirouneticn of ir, in order to obtain highly heated secondary and tertiary air, and achieve complete combustion of the gases at the inlet and outlet of the combustion chamber burner.
The combustion rate not being forced, a long flame comes out of the burner in a plume without sting and at low temperature, thus ensuring the good conservation of the boiler and a low temperature of the gases at the chimney.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to prevent noxious gas emissions in the room where the burner is located, the charcoal store is fitted with a cover with hydraulic seal. Finally, a valve is fitted to the back of the ashtray and allows the burner to run at idle by natural draft.
The accompanying drawings show an exemplary embodiment of a coal burner according to the invention, composed of several identical intermediate elements made of cast iron, a front element and a rear element.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section along the axis of the burner placed in front of a boiler or a fireplace.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the burner.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section made by a plane passing at the level of the grid.
In these figures "1" designates a combustion chamber completely surrounded by a water chamber "2", formed by the upper wall "3", in contact with the gases and the lower walls "4" constituting two grids inclined in V shape covered with charcoal.
This chamber "1" is connected to a boiler or a hearth, by a throat "5" and is surmounted by a charcoal hopper "6" which has at its upper part a cover "7" with seal "8". hydraulic, and in its lower part two registers "9" regulating the flow of coal.
Under the grids "4", an ashtray "10" in which the compressed air is blown by a fan connected to an opening "11" located at the rear; an automatic valve "12" ensures operation by natural draft when the fan is stopped.
The various intermediate cast iron elements, all identical, are cooled by water ciculation and assembled either by gaskets or by rings, which allows water supply circulation "13" and water return circulation "14".
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in direct connection with the boiler; Tie rods "15" ensure tightness by blocking all the burner elements.
The descent of charcoal on each grate is facilitated by the large section "16" openings so that the inclined grates are covered at all points with a uniform layer of carbon of equal thickness; Combustion thus takes place over a very large grate surface with a regular layer of carbon and a passage of resistor led air which promotes good combustion and a long burner operating time.
The thickness of the carbon layer on the grid can moreover be adjusted, if necessary, by varying the inclination of the strip "17".
The front element of the circulating water burner is fitted with a large cleaning door "18" and ashtray doors "19"; it also receives a circulation of air coming from the ashtray through the openings "20" which allow the air to flow into the combustion chamber through the holes "21". This secondary air is thus greatly heated, which thus promotes cooling of the element in contact with the flames.
The rear element provided with a double-walled cast iron throat receives tertiary air under the same conditions as the front element; however, this air emerges in the air circulation hood, exits through holes "22" and warms up strongly there, because the very bright flames of the burner lick all the internal walls of the hood.
Thanks to this device combustion is normal and the gases are completely burnt; tertiary air at high temperature, moreover, leaves the throat through special orifices and completely surrounds the flame. The throat being independent of the rear element can easily adapt to

different types of boilers.
