"SYSTEME DE CAMION POUR LE TRANSPORT DE CADRER William Platts KELLETT
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"TRUCK SYSTEM FOR THE TRANSPORT OF FRAME William Platts KELLETT
The present invention relates to improvements to trucks for transporting frames or containers, in which a semi-trailer truck system is provided with an lifting platform of shorter length than the container, so as to handle the latter when '' it is placed on the truck or removed, the trailer comprising, in front of this platform, a device serving to complete the latter to support the end of the container which extends beyond this platform -form, during transport of the container from one place to another.
The main object of the present invention is to facilitate the handling of mobile containers in the door-to-door delivery of goods and to provide a truck system particularly suitable for the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
handling of containers which can be packed and unpacked in stores and shipped from store to rail, with minimal truck transport.
On the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a semi-trailer system according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view showing the trailer in the normal position, attached to a tractor, and carrying a container shown partially in elevation,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the device of FIG. 2 showing the platform of the trailer in a raised position, carrying the container free from the rest of the trailer system,
Fig.
4 is a perspective view, on a larger scale, of a detail of one of the saddle-shaped supports of the front end of the container,
When handling containers in the form of large boxes mounted on casters so as to roll them on store or vehicle floors, it is necessary to provide a very flexible system for transporting the containers from the store to the railway wagon and, as containers constituting half the load of a wagon have a considerable length, the trailers used to transport them are necessarily long and this is in order to considerably reduce the total length necessary of this device that the present invention has been completed.
Tractor 1, which can be of any suitable type and which is shown here schematically,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is provided with a turntable system 2 at its rear end. The trailer is constituted by a frame 3, mounted on a set of very close together wheels 4, and this frame is provided with an upwardly offset part 5, which comes above the turntable and which is provided with a part 6 coupling to the turntable and cooperating with it.
A system of hydraulic jacks 7, of a suitable bype, is arranged on the chassis of the trailer and carries a platform 8 which is constructed so as to receive and carry the system of wheels 9 of the container 10. These rollers are arranged on the container, so that the ends of the container are cantilevered, that is to say that sets of rollers are arranged near the ends of the container and at intermediate points along the length of it, approximately at 1/4 of that length, so that the container, when rolled from a railroad car to the truck and from the truck to a quay, supports itself on the entire distance between the pair of end rollers and the neighboring set.
The platform 8 of the trailer shown here is long enough to accommodate the two sets of center rollers, and one end set and the other end of the container protrude beyond the platform and onto the offset part. 2 of the trailer frame.
A pair of consoles 11 is rigidly mounted on the side members of the front end of the offset part of the frame 3, and saddle-shaped plates 12 are mounted on top of these consoles or form part of them.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tégrante and these plates 12 comprise a flange turned upwards, 13, serving to receive the periphery of the rollers of the front set of rollers of the container and to serve as a stop for them when the platform 8 is in its position. low.
Appropriate means are provided, although not shown in the drawing, for locking the container on the trailer with the front end of the container coming directly onto the turntable and the tractor. The container body is placed as close to the tractor cab as possible to allow the tractor to turn properly in bends.
It is understood that the invention has been described and represented here for explanatory purposes only and not as limitation and that it may include any variant or modification of detail in accordance with its spirit.
