<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

TILTING AND AUTOCLAVE WASHING MACHINE
This invention relates to washing machines working by sprinkling, of the type described in Belgian patent No. 344,573 of August 19, 1927, comprising a rotating washing drum provided at its periphery with buckets drawing the washing liquid from a fixed outer casing, to pour it onto the laundry to be washed through the perforations of the rotating drum. This is supported at one end only and the free end, not supported, has a central opening for the entry and exit of the laundry.
These machines with cantilevered washing drum were primarily intended for domestic use or for small installations handling only a relatively low weight of laundry at a time. In addition, the capacity and rather small dimensions of these devices did not justify and did not allow the use of a special loading and unloading device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to be introduced into the machine.
The object of the present invention is a washing machine operating on the same principle, adapted for treating laundry in larger quantities and more particularly arranged to allow work in an autoclave, under pressure or under pressure. empty., as well as to allow automatic loading and unloading without the aid of a special device.
The need for work carried out exclusively in isolation is essential in establishments such as, for example, hospitals where objects, linens or clothing, highly contaminated and which require not only washing and disinfection, have to be treated frequently. thorough, but still a thorough sterilization for their subsequent use, the sterilization being obtained by alternating periods of work under vacuum and under steam pressure at high temperature. Working in an autoclave is also an essential condition for the cleanliness of the rooms in which the machines are installed.
According to the invention, the non-rotating outer casing is pivotally mounted on two journals located on a transverse axis, so that the loading and unloading of the laundry will take place automatically by gravity after tilting of the whole of the laundry. washer drum and its envelope around these journals. Also according to the invention, the arrival and departure of the washing agent which can be a liquid, a fluid or a gas, are effected by one of these journals which for this purpose is hollow and communicates with a supply. appropriate of that liquid, fluid or gas.
In addition, an ejector or a pump, in relation with the hollow journal and with the interior of the machine, makes it possible to maintain therein a continuous circulation and more generally a displacement of the liquid, fluid or gas, in at the same time as keeping it at an appropriate temperature.
The invention further includes further improvements to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
details such as the special watertight closing device of the door, the way in which the rotating drum is supported in its casing, the particular arrangement of the control mechanism directly mounted on the tilting casing so as to be able to participate in its tilting movements, means for creating a vacuum inside the drum without having to first aspirate the liquid collected at the bottom, and means for introducing fresh detergent into the machine without opening the envelope door .
In the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is an end view of the machine, from the side of the loading door; the f ig. 2 is a side elevation; fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the front part of the rotary drum and of its casing; fig. 4 shows, for the record, a half-section of the rotating drum, the shape of which is defined by Belgian patent No. 344,573 of the applicants; fig. 5 is a schematic view of the machine in an inclined position; fig. 6 is a diagram of an exemplary arrangement of the pipes applicable in the case of washing clothes; the rig. 7 shows a variant of a device for introducing fresh laundry.
1 designates the non-rotating outer casing and 2 the rotary perforated drum or washer drum which rotates inside this casing. This drum carries at its periphery the buckets 3 which draw the washing agent, liquid or fluid, from the lower part of the fixed envelope. At one end, this drum is integral with a control shaft 4 supported by the bottom 5 of the casing. At the opposite end which is open, the rotating drum 2 is supported by the non-rotating casing 1 by means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
track rollers 6 (fig. 3) or equivalent device, which has the effect of removing the control shaft 4 from any bending forces, whatever the weight of the load being processed in the drum 2. The opening central 10 of enclosure 1 can be closed by a shutter or a door 11.
This door can for example be reattached to a bracket 12 which at one end is hinged at 13 on the bottom 9 of the casing and at the other end is provided with a suitable locking 14. The door 11 is fixed to the end of a screw 15 passing through the bracket 12 and carrying a handwheel 16 serving to tighten the door on its seat. It is mounted at the end of the screw 15 with a certain freedom of movement so that it can bear uniformly on its seat and ensure at all points the seal which is essential for working in an autoclave under pressure or in a vacuum.
One of the main characteristics of the present invention is that the casing 1 is pivotally mounted on two diametrically opposed journals 17-18, so as to be able to take a tilting movement. To control this tilting movement, one of the journals 17 carries a toothed sector 19 or its equivalent, engaged with an endless screw whose shaft carries at its end a handwheel 20. A suitable locking system 21 operated by a hand lever 22 allows locking the machine in the desired position. This control device by sector and tangent screw can be replaced by a mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or even magnetic control.
The journal 18 opposite to that carrying the toothed sector 19 is hollow and is used for the entry of the washing agent into the machine. The rig. 6 shows an example of piping in connection with this journal. The journal 18 is extended by a pipe 23 leading to a three-way valve 24. If, for example, it is washing clothes, a pipe 25 connects the valve 24 with hot water supply pipes, d cold water and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
laundry, served respectively by taps 26, 27 and 28.
On the other hand, an ejector or steam pump 29 supplied with steam by the pipe 30 provided with a valve 31, is connected by the pipe 32 with the three-way valve 24 and by the pipe 33 with the drain tube 34 of the machine, provided with the valve 35. At the top of the casing 1 is placed a safety valve 36 limiting the pressure - or vacuum - inside the machine. A discharge pipe 37 with a hand valve 38 makes it possible to drop this pressure or this vacuum at the end of the operation.
As part of the piping described above must be able to follow the tilting movements of the machine, the necessary arrangements will be made, for example by the judicious use of flexible hoses as well as by the presence, at in the vicinity of the three-way valve 24, a special gland 39 allowing rotation while ensuring the desired tightness. Likewise, since the mechanism which controls the rotation of the drum 2 must also move with the machine, it is mounted directly on the bottom 5 of the casing 1.
This mechanism will include an electric motor 40 or the like, the movement of which is transmitted to the control shaft 4 of the rotary drum by a suitable transmission comprising usual gear 41 devices, reversing the direction of rotation of the drum, and others in use. in machines of the kind specified.
The operation of the maohine in the case of washing the laundry is as follows:
Straighten the envelope 1 to bring the opening 10 upwards. Drop the load, close the shutter 11 and return the machine to the horizontal position which is the normal one for washing. Pour into the machine a suitably dosed mixture of cold water, hot water and detergent by an appropriate operation of the taps 26, '27 and 28 and of the three-way tap 24, the liquid level in the casing 1 not in front
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
not exceed the lower part of the washing drum 2. Turn the three-way valve 24 so as to cut off the communication between the pipes 23 and 25 and to establish the communication between the pipe 23 and the steam pump 29.
Heat the liquid contained in the machine by steam, causing the liquid to circulate which, starting from the low point 34 of the machine, passes through the pump 29 which returns it into the machine through the hollow journal 18 passing through the three-way valve tracks 24. Start the engine.
At the end of the operation, drain the machine through tap 35, or direct the three-way tap 84 to pipes 32 and 25, open tap 28 and deliver the detergent using steam pressure to a recovery tank in passing through the valve 28. During work the safety valve 36 will limit the pressure inside the machine; at the end of the operation, the pressure can be released by simply opening the valve 38 on the pipe 37.
To take out the load after washing, open the door 11 and after having released the lock 21 turn the handwheel 20 to tilt the machine by directing the door downwards (see fig. 5). It is preferable to leave the motor running to obtain automatic ejection of the laundry. If necessary, a suitable container or a small trolley can be brought under the machine to receive the laundry.
In order to be able to fill the vacuum inside the washing drum without having to first suck the liquid collected at the bottom, an additional pipe 42 is provided, starting from the upper part of the drum and ending in the pipe. 33 which connects the outlet of the tamoour to the horn or pump 29. A three-way valve 43 is placed at the junction of the two pipes 33 and 42.
On the other hand, an ejection pipe 44 controlled by a tap 45 completes the group of hot water and water inlet pipes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
cold and recovered laundry, served by taps 26, 27 and 28. To empty, all you have to do is turn tap 43 on 42 and 33, branch going towards the tube 29, tap 24 on 32 and 25, and to open the tap 45, the taps 26, 27 and 28 being closed. The suction will be done from the top of the drum. The arrangement described therefore makes it possible to carry out with the greatest convenience the alternation of periods of work under pressure and under vacuum, necessary for sterilization.
For the introduction of fresh detergent into the machine without opening door 11, the following devices are provided:
According to the first solution (FIGS. 1 and 5), the journal 17 is hollow and crossed with a tight seal by a pipe 46 opening into the drum and participating in its tilting movements.
Outside the journal 17, the pipe 46 carries a funnel 47 and an obturator, valve or other: '48. A support 49 of suitable shape fixed on the bearing of the journal carries a measuring vessel 50 with a floating ball valve 51, of a known type, provided at its base with a three-way valve 52 enabling the measuring vessel to be placed in relation either with a supply of laundry 53, or with the discharge pipe 54 under which the funnel 47 is placed when the axis of the drum of the machine is horizontal.
According to the second solution (fig. 7) which does not include a funnel, the hollow journal 17 is provided with a stuffing box 55 through which the tube 46 passes and which allows the tilting of the machine without involving the tube 46 to this movement. This tube 46 is connected directly to the three-way valve 52 making it possible to put the measuring vessel 50 in connection either with a supply of detergent 53, or with the pipe 46 for filling the machine.
By one or other of these very simple devices, fresh detergent can be introduced in a determined quantity into the machine during work, without the interior of the drum
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
be placed in communication with the open air.
This machine, forming an autoclave and having a perfect seal, is also adaptable to vacuum drying as well as to vacuum or pressure treatment and at any suitable temperature of objects placed in the drum. This etanoheity makes it possible in particular to use it advantageously in dyeing works for cleaning or degreasing by volatile liquids, with total recovery of the volatile bodies used.
It also allows disinfection under remarkable hygienic conditions for the staff. When you want to use the machine as a wringer it will suffice to tilt it around its pivots to bring the longitudinal axis of the drum to a vertical position.
