PATENT FOR IMPROVEMENT Chain derailleur for gear change, applicable to bicycles, tricycles, and the like. in the name of: Alexandre, Jules BRUYNDONCKX known as "BRAUNE"
The present application for improvement relates to a chain derailleur for speed change, based on the invention forming the subject of the Belgian patent filed on July 18, 1935.
The main object of the present improvement patent is to make improvements from the construotif point of view of the derailleur and its control sheath.
According to the present application, the derailment lever comprises a fork with vertical teeth, optionally offset with respect to one another, these teeth being able to carry rollers, rotating in the opposite direction to the movement of the chain, in order to eliminate any friction noise and eliminate any possibility of braking or wear of the chain.
The single hitch center shift lever can have two arms of equal or optionally different dimensions, each carrying a vertical tooth or other to engage the chain at the most convenient locations

and avoid any possible contact with the spokes.
The chain tensioner can be connected to the derailment lever by a cable so as to lift the tensioner at the same time as the lever moves so as to reduce the thrust of the roller on the chain when the large sprocket is used.
The casing of the rotary control handle may include two adjustment stops, in order to limit the cable travel exactly and at will with respect to the movement of the derailment lever.
The control may be constituted by a handle mounted on a ring capable of rotating directly on the hanger, said handle moving in a groove provided in the casing of a fixing collar, this groove possibly being provided with position notches. The housing may include an adjustable friction device, in order to be able to adjust the desired resistances for the movement of the control lever.
Said control may be constituted by a rotating handle which can be mounted on the same fixing casing as the handle with synchronized or separate controls; this control can also be constituted by a thumbwheel preceding a fixed handle.
In the accompanying drawing are shown, by way of example, embodiments of this improvement.
Fig. 1 is a view from below of the derailment lever and of the plate which carries it.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view according to FIG. 1, the front part being cut vertically.
Fig. S shows a bottom view of another embodiment of the shift lever and
Fig. 4 is an elevational view thereof.

applied to the handlebars.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view according to FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section along A-B of FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is a cross section along C-D of rod 6.
Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section through a control handle, and
Fig. 10 represents the same ooupe, the handle being fixed but preceded by a control wheel.
According to fig. 1, the shift lever 4 carries at its base teeth 18-19 directed vertically and between which the chain to be moved is disposed, these teeth preferably being offset with respect to each other as shown in the drawing. These teeth can carry rollers 20 in order to eliminate any friction noise and at the same time eliminate any possibility of braking or wear of the chain.
Another embodiment of the derailment lever, but based on the same principle, is shown in figs. 3 and 4.
In these figures, said lever comprises two arms 4-4 'which may have the same length, but preferably of different lengths, the shorter arm then being directed towards the wheel in order to avoid any possible contact with the spokes. .
These arms carry teeth 18-19 preferably offset with respect to one another.
In order to assist in the lifting of the chain tensioner during the displacement of the derailment lever towards the largest toothed pinion of the cycle control wheel, said lever 4 is provided with a cable 21 which connects it to the chain tensioner and so that the movement of the lever 4 operates a certain lifting to reduce the thrust

of. roller on the chain when using the large sprocket, as shown above.
Improvements are also made to the control lever preferably placed near one of the handles of the handlebars; the principle of operation of this control can be achieved by the handle itself.
According to figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, the control lever is mounted on a ring 22 which can rotate between the ointre 23 and a fixing collar 24. In this collar, a groove 25 is provided, the ends of which have the stops 10-10 '. of the handle 8. This fixing collar is also drilled to allow passage of the cable 9 (see fig. 8).
The groove 25 can, if desired, be provided with notches holding the lever 8 in the desired position.
The collar 24 can be provided with an adjustable friction device 26 (FIG. 8) in order to be able to adjust the resistance to be overcome by the lever 8 during its controlled movements.
According to fig. 9, the control takes place directly by the handle 27 of the handlebars. For this purpose, the metal nozzle of the handle is integral with the ring 22. In this case, the handle 8 can be removed and replaced by a screw 28 which travels in the groove 25 provided with stops, as indicated in FIG. 8.
Finally, according to fig. 10, the handle 27 can be fixed, but preceded by a wheel 29 which is fixed to the ring 22 and operate the control as explained in FIG. 9.
The plate 1 is provided, as before, with the axis 30 of the fork 4, the pivot 31 of the spring 6 ', and the stop pivot 32 of the cable well 33.
The invention has been described and illustrated purely as an indication and in no way limiting, and it goes without saying that many modifications can be made to its requirements.
