<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Advanced assembly mechanism for typographic typesetting machines.
This invention relates to letterpress typesetting machines such as those known in the industry under the trademark Linotype, in which dies released and dispensed individually by a store in the order of composition are assembled into rows, lines of compound matrices being transferred to the mefanism to melt the characters.
In machines of this kind, when the dies have been released from the store, they are received in the composter provided with rails on which they rest by their protruding ears and retaining pawls which engage behind these ears at the moment. where the matrices enter the said composta These retaining pawls normally serve to prevent the displacement of the last compound matrix making

part of the line during the movement of the composter from the composition position to the transfer position of the lines, in a known manner,
since the die ears are located approximately at the next edge of the die and remain in engagement with the pawl shoulders until such time as the die line is moved along the channel of the dies. assembly by the transfer fingers of the lines. However, in the case of thick or special dies such as ad dies, headlines, etc., the ears of a die may be located so far apart, in front of the leading edge of the die, that they are not supported by the retaining pawls during the movement of the composter.
According to the invention, these difficulties are avoided by providing a form of pawl which automatically moves inward to engage with an ear of the last die made up of the line, regardless of the position occupied by this ear by relative to the next edge of the matrix.
One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view with partial cut away of a composition or assembly mechanism provided with this embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts of FIG. I.
The assembly mechanism shown in these drawings is of known construction comprising a composter 1 in which the dies, released by the store (not shown) in the order of composition, are arranged in line by a wheel or rotating paddle wheel. 2 against the face of a finger or line stop 3.
When a complete line has been assembled in the composter 1, the latter performs a poor elevation between guides 4,5 carried by the fixed front plate 6 of the machine, to be transferred to the mechanism to be melted by the fingers of transfer 7.8.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
urinally, two retaining pawls, such as the pawl
10 shown in FIG. 2, are arranged so as to engage behind the ears of the dies at the moment when the latter enter the composter i ,. these pawls serving auss.i to retain the last matrix composed in position during the upward movement to said composterb.
However, as said before, when a thick or special die 12 is assembled at the end of a line, its ears 13 are located at such a large distance, inside the channel 14 of the composter 1. , that the retaining pawls, such as they had been constructed to date, can no longer play the role mentioned last, and the present invention relates to a device for preventing the movement of such a die. whatever the position of his ears.
According to the embodiment, $ ion shown, the retaining pawl 15, mounted in the rear wall 16 of the composter 1, has at its inner end an arm 17 which extends rearwardly through a slot 18 of the wall 16 and protrudes rearwardly out of this slot. This pawl is intended to pivot around a vertical axis 19 fixed to the wall 16, preferably by an olnt close to the internal end of the arm 17, and is maintained in its normal position, to engage with the successive dies as they enter the composter, by a spring which keeps the outer end of the rear arm 17 against a stop 21 fixed, preferably in an adjustable manner, to the front plate 6 of the frame, i of the machine, at the back of the composter 1.
This stop 21 has an inclined edge 22 which engages with the arm 17 of the pawl 15 and allows the latter to sempuvoir inwards under the action of its transfer when the composter rises while moving away. of the assembly position. The longitudinal arm 23 of the pawl 15 is thus maintained in engagement with the rear lug 13 of the last die composed of the line during the movement of the composter 1 away
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the assembly position and is returned to the normal position by the cam action of the inclined edge 22 of the stopper 21 as the composter i is returned to the assembly position.
The ± 8 febte of the rear wall 16 of the composter, slot @ in which the rear arm 17 of the pawl 15 is received, has walls which diverge towards the rear to allow the pivoting movement of the pawl, and the wall or edge
24 of this slot 18 behaves like a stop to limit the movement of the pawl 15 inwards.
Thanks to the arrangements previously described, thick matrices such as 12 are suitably supported during the upward movement of the composter 1 and the normal operation of the pawl 15 remains uninfluenced during the composition of the line.
Of course, the construction described and shown has been given by way of example only and is susceptible to various modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention.
