On a proposé d'utiliser des brosses pour le nettoyage des armes à feu, ces brosses étant montées sur une tige que l'on introduit dans le canon de l'arme. Les touffes de soies de ces brosses sont réparties régulièrement autour de l'axe de la tige porte-brosse, de façon qu'il y avait lieu de prévoir toujours une tension excessive de ces touffes, afin de pouvoir agir efficacement dans les rayures du canon de l'arme, ainsi que sur les autres parties de celle-ci .Ceci rendait l'opération de nettoyage toujours très fatigante et l'usure de ces brosses était totalement anormale.
L'on a maintenant trouvé de disposer ces touffes de brosse sur l'arbre suivant une disposition tout à fait particulière, de manière qu'elles s'adaptent pour ainsi dire automatiquement dans les rayures du canon, ce qui permet un nettoyage beaucoup plus efficient à côté d'une manipulation particulièrement allégée.
