<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to tools for grinding surfaces of revolution, in particular cylindrical surfaces,
The invention relates to tools for grinding surfaces of revolution and in particular cylindrical surfaces such as the bores of engine cylinders, tools of the type of those essentially comprising a certain number of grinding wheels intended to work together. - Lon generatrices of the surfaces and supported in such a way, by an appropriate tool holder, that their spacing from the axis of said tool holder can be made variable.
Its aim, above all, is to make these devices such that they meet, better than hitherto, the various desiderata of practice, in particular that they allow working with much greater precision, so that in particular we can, by a single operation using
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of said devices, to rectify surfaces such as the wounds of used cylinders, whereas until now these devices have only allowed a finishing to be carried out always preceded by a roughing operation using other tools. tis.
It consists, mainly - at the same time in having recourse, to allow the spacing of the grinding wheels to vary, to elements with oblique surfaces with respect to the axis of the tool holder and acting in the manner of wedges - - to transmit the forces between said elements and the grinding wheels or their supports, by means of balls.
It comprises, apart from this main arrangement, certain other arrangements which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular, a second arrangement, consisting in guiding the grinding wheels or grinding wheel supports of the devices of the kind in question, substantially over the entire length of the body of the tool, in suitable grooves provided by the latter, and a third arrangement consisting, in order to maintain good guidance of the grinding wheels, in the radial direction , even when increasing the diameter of the surfaces to be worked, to be combined, with the tool holders of said devices, extensions easily adaptable to the body of the tool holders, and provided with means, for example with grooves, for guiding the grinding wheels.
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said arrangements; and it relates, more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to devices of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions to the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as to machines and installations comprising similar ones. devices, And it could, in any case, be well oompri-

se with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 and 2 of these drawings show, respectively in longitudinal and transverse sections, a tool for grinding the cylindrical surfaces established in accordance with the invention, FIG. 2 representing, to bring out the field of application of this tool, several grinding wheels with distinct radii of action.
Fig. 3 shows an extension to be mounted, in accordance with the invention, on the body of the tool shown in FIGS, 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 shows in cross section the assembly of the tool and its extension, this assembly being here again shown with several grinding wheels with distinct radiuses of action.
Figs. 5 to 8 show, similarly to figs. 1 to 4, a tool to be ground and an extension set up in accordance with variant embodiments of the invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing for example to '' to establish a tool to grind the cylinders of engines, we do it as follows, or analogously,
This device is essentially understood to include, on the one hand, a tool holder 1 constituted by a prismatic or other cylindrical body, capable of being adapted to the end of a shaft or of a spindle of a grinding machine of a suitable type, on the other hand, a number of grinding wheels aligned around the periphery of the body of the tool, in directions parallel to the axis of said body, being suitably guided, it being possible for these wheels to be formed,
either by metal bars, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
either preferably by an abrasive material 2 such as carborondum, molded or crimped in supports 3, and, finally, means to allow to vary at will, within certain limits, the working diameter of these wheels, means comprising them themselves essentially at least one element, for example conical, acting in the manner of a wedge preferably along the axis of the body of the tool, or two elements of this type 4 and 5, in particular of reverse taper.
As regards, more specifically, the connections to be provided between said element (s), on the one hand, and the grinding wheels or grinding wheel supports, on the other hand, with a view to making it possible to transform the axial displacement of these elements in axial displacements of the grinding wheels, they are produced, in accordance with one of the provisions of the invention, using balls such as 6, bearing respectively on the elements or wedges 4,5 and on the supports 3 .
For this purpose, for example, the cones 4 and 5 are placed in a bore formed axially in the body of the tool, one of these cones being for example made integral, as is known, with a rod 7. comprising a thread on which the other cone, prevented from rotating by a key 25, is screwed, and a spring 8 preferably being formed between the two cones to tend to separate them, and, as regards the balls , they are guided so that their respective distances remain substantially constant, for example through openings 9 formed in the body of the tool.
On the side of the cones 4,5, the balls will preferably come into direct contact with the cones while, on the side of the supports, they can come, either directly in contact with them, as re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
or indirectly, by means of pieces or pellets 10 (FIGS. 5 and 6) conforming to the shape of the balls, these pellets being for example mounted at the end of shanks 11 guided in bores 12 of the supports 3.
An assembly is thus obtained such that, by moving the two cones apart - which is produced, either automatically or by hand, by unscrewing or by screwing the rod 7 into the corresponding cone 4, said rod being for example extended by a square fitting 13 on which a control part 14 is engaged - the balls 6 can be brought in or out, and consequently. the supports 3 and the grinding wheels, the latter normally being urged by radial or other springs 15 against said balls,
The adoption of balls of this kind allows, all other things being equal - that is to say for cones of the same axial height -, to obtain for the grinding wheels the possibilities of extension (indicated on the dotted line drawings 16),
much larger than existing tools of this kind allow. This advantage is due to the fact that the contact between the balls and the cones is punctual and makes it possible to use the entire surface of said cones; on the contrary, in existing tools, the contact is made on a significant part of the generator so that said surface is only partially used.
In addition, the balls are perfectly balanced elements, which is important from the point of view of the precision of the adjustment and, finally, the adjustment is smoother to effect, because,: during tightening, the balls roll on cones.
This arrangement also makes it possible to achieve the radial guiding of the grinding wheel supports perfectly, and, for this purpose, recourse is preferably had to another arrangement, which may optionally be used in isolation, according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
which this guidance is carried out over the entire length of the body of the tool, for example using grooves 17 (assumed to be six in number in the drawings) of rectangular section, that is to say with parallel faces, grooves that one spares from one end to the other of the said body and at the bottom of which one opens the lights 9.
Under these conditions, it is possible to eliminate any possibility of play, which makes it possible to ensure rectification with very high precision.
In addition, by giving the outside diameter of the body of the tool the greatest possible value having regard to the minimum value of the diameter of the surfaces to be worked, it is possible to ensure that the grinding wheels work with a very low overhang, so that the tool cannot graze. It is thus possible, using such a tool, to directly re-bore the used cylinders, without any other prior operation,
In the direction no longer radial but axial, the guiding will be carried out by any appropriate means, for example using lugs 18 carried by the supports 3 and penetrating into the housings 19 formed in the body 1 (FIG. I) or conversely (fig 5), said lugs possibly being constituted by screw heads.
It will of course be possible to mount different grinding wheel supports in the aforesaid grooves, depending on the diameter of the surface to be worked.
Thus, in FIG. 2, several different types of supports have been shown, each of them differing from the one whose size is immediately smaller than it in the fact that its radial length is increased by the variation of diameter allowed by the cones, (i.e. in fig. 2,
4 or 6, by the distance between the dotted line 16 and the corresponding solid line).
The Berne tool can therefore be used to rectify several

But we can moreover, if we want to avoid significant overhangs when the diameter orolt, fit on the body of the tool at least one extension 20 such as that shown in FIGS. 3, 4, 7 and 8, this extension itself comprising grooves 21 to correspond to the grooves 17 and being either of the same diameter as the latter (fig, 7 and 8), or of greater diameter (fig, 5 and 6 ), in which case the supports 3 have a stepped section; these supports possibly being established in several parts.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having more specifically considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants thereof, in particular. those for which the balls, instead of pressing directly on the supports 3, would be in contact with intermediate parts.
