<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROCESS FOR DEPURATION AND OR STABILIZATION OF
HYDROCARBONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE INTENDED FOR
TO BE USED AS FUEL.
For the refining of many hydrocarbons it is common to use sulfuric acid.
In particular, this refining is obtained, according to methods currently in use, by treatment with concentrated or more or less dilute sulfuric acid and, after elimination of the acid and washing with water, by neutralization with. using an alkaline solution, these operations being followed by distillation.
It is a recognized fact that, especially in hydrocarbons intended for use as fuels, the resins presently present, as well as the compounds capable of forming resins, as well as free or combined sulfur, constitute harmful substances. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
If the treatments with sulfuric acid, in particular concentrated, make it possible to eliminate harmful substances, in particular resins and bodies liable to form them, they have the serious drawback of also eliminating products recognized as valuable in fuels because of their anti-knock properties; moreover, they lead to significant losses which can reach 15% and more.
The object of the invention is to avoid these drawbacks and it relates to a process for the purification and or stabilization of hydrocarbons, more especially those intended for use as fuels, capable of providing, in an economical manner, and virtually lossless, superior quality, anti-detonation and perfectly stable products.
It results from the applicant's research that the resins; Harmful compounds are formed by polymerization of di- and polyolefins, while monolefins, which form useful anti-detonants, do not polymerize, and the rapid polymerization of di- and polyolefins can be determined by processing. - ment of the material using appropriate reagents, the resins formed can then be separated.
It results from these same researches that the reagents capable of causing the polymerization of di and polyolefins are constituted by organic compounds of the fatty series containing in the molecule one or more So3H groups.
In accordance with the invention, the invention consists in adding to the hydrocarbons to be treated, containing di- and polyolefins, a reagent formed from an organic compound of the fatty series containing in its molecule one or more So3H groups, so as to transform di and polyolefins to resins, and to separate the latter.
The reagents referred to in the previous paragraphs are more or less pure compounds and may contain an excess of sulfuric acid resulting from their preparation.
However, it has also been recognized that these compounds are advantageously used in conjunction with bodies of the genus of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
alcohols, which allows the treatment of hydrocarbons to be carried out with greater ease.
The invention therefore also consists in using, for carrying out the treatment of hydrocarbons of the type mentioned, said compounds of the fatty series together with bodies of the type of alcohols.
It has further been recognized that the polymerization reactions of di and polyolefins should as far as possible be carried out in the absence of water, and according to another feature of the invention one will operate in a medium practically free of water.
And among the said compounds of the fatty series which has been found to have an interesting polymerization power, methyl-sulfuric, ethyl-sulfuric and the like have given good results.
The invention therefore provides, in particular, for the use of the acids listed in the preceding paragraph) employed alone or in conjunction with substances of the type of alcohols.
In the tests carried out, with a very impure crude benzol, sufficient purification and / or stabilization was obtained using compounds such as the aforesaid in an amount not exceeding a few% by weight of the treated benzol.
The invention therefore also consists in using, for the treatment of hydrocarbons, a small amount of a compound of the fatty series containing in its molecule one or more So3H groups, the amount being of the order of a few% by weight. , and less, of the material processed.
If instead of mixing the addition with the treated material prior to its distillation, it is distilled and the distillation vapors are passed through the additive material, the gums or resins contained in the material remain in the still and the di and polyolefins which distil are fixed by the addition.
Consequently, the invention also consists in distilling said materials containing gums and resins as well as di or polyolefins, so that the gums or resins remain in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the distillation residue and passing the distillation vapors through an additive of the kind defined.
The treatment of the hydrocarbons can be carried out at ordinary temperature, but the action is notably faster if one operates at a higher temperature, and in particular at the boiling point of the substance to be treated.
The process is therefore further characterized by the fact that it is carried out at a temperature above ambient temperature and in particular at the boiling temperature of the material treated.
The example below illustrates the invention.
EXAMPLE I - 500 cc. of a benzol-engine are treated by 10 cc. of methylsulfuric acid (CH3O. So3H) giving 460 cc. of white benzol.
The crude benzol titrated 38 of bromine number, that is to say 38 cc. of a deci-normal bromide-bromate solution for 2 cc. and 0.410 gr. of current gums per 100 cc.
The treated benzol gives a br8me number of 24 to 2 cc * and a title of 0.0003 gr. of current gums per 100 cc.
In the tests carried out, it was found that the mono-fines were not modified and that the sulfur contained in the initial product was largely removed by the treatment.
As goes without saying and as has already been suggested, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the reagents more especially mentioned, nor to the details of the defined operating mode, but includes the equivalents and variants.
