<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Multi-way valve for the pneumatic control of the gear change mechanism of a motor vehicle at both ends of the latter".
This invention relates to a valve for the pneumatic control of the gear change of a motor vehicle. The use of this valve is mainly intended for the type of gear shifting with sliding gear, where the engagement between the primary and secondary shafts is obtained by the engagement between the teeth of the gear change gears or of integral clutches. of these gears. In these changes of speed the couplings must take place one at a time, and it is necessary that before each coupling the other is completely disengaged.
If the gear change mechanism is to be operable from two or more separate points on the vehicle, for example from both ends of a railway or tram vehicle, the valve must be in a "closed" position. so that the air introduced at one end of the vehicle does not escape from the other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The valve should thus be able to take the "closed" position (completely closed), the "neutral" position (completely open), the various "on" positions and the intermediate positions for disengaging the gear in function, without having to return to the "neutral" position.
According to the invention the object is achieved by employing a valve the core of which is a disk rotating on a polished surface with respect to which it functions as a slide.
On the polished surface open the conduits, one for each gear, connecting the valve to the gear boot; In the drawer are formed chambers which communicate with the compressed air tank or with the atmosphere, and which by moving on the polished surface put all the aforementioned ducts in communication with the atmosphere (neutral position), or at all. least one which (position (on) communicates with the compressed air tank, or else blocks them all (closed position) by successive partial rotations.
The attached drawing shows by way of example the application of the valve according to the invention to the pneumatic control of the gear change mechanism according to the patent application filed today for: "device for controlling a change gear for motor vehicles, particularly for railway and tramway motor cars, using a pressurized fluid "Case C.
Fig.l is an axial section of the valve at the line R-S of fig.2.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line M-N of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show two positions of the valve in the application to the control of a gear change mechanism.
The four-step gear change control is shown schematically (fig. 4). Every two successive speeds (first and second, third and fourth) are obtained by the displacement of the two rods
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a and b respectively, which are moved in both directions by the pistons c of the single-acting cylinders m, n, r, s, which in their rest position are held in external dead center by the springs d. Each cylinder receives the compressed air by a tube e which connects it to the valve, which can also discharge it by putting it in communication with the atmosphere.
In the "neutral" position all the cylinders are unloaded, ie they are in communication with the atmosphere. In the running position one of them receives the compressed air, which keeps the respective piston c in the working position or internal dead center against the action of the spring d, while the other three cylinders communicate with the atmosphere .
By changing from one speed to the next (up or down) the cylinder in operation must be unloaded, and another must be pressurized. For maneuvering the two ends of the vehicle using valves whose respective conduits e are branched off from each other, a closed position is also provided in which the ends of the tubes terminate in the inactive faucet remain blocked. Each valve has at least six positions (fig. 4 and 5): closed, neutral, first speed, second speed, third speed, fourth speed.
The operating handle is unique for both taps, it can only be removed when it is in the "closed" position.
The tobinet construction shown in fig.l, 2 and 3 is used to achieve this operation. The body 1 of the valve, fixed to a support or console by means of a flange 1 ', has a cylindrical chamber 3 with a circular polished surface 2, into which the conduits open, according to an arrangement described below. 4 to which are connected at 5 the tubes (fig. 3) of each cylinder, and in the center the conduit 6 to which is connected at 7 a discharge tube communicating with the atmosphere. On the polished surface 2, can turn

the disc 8, guided in a cylindrical seat, functioning as a slide for the distribution of compressed air to the various ducts 4 and constituting the core of the valve.
The chamber 3 is hermetically closed by the threaded cover 9 crossed by the rod 10 for controlling the disc 8.
The rod 10 is integral with the disc 11 which can rotate on the lining 12 of the cover 9, a spring 13 compressed between the disc 11 and the disc 8 serving to make the first adhere to the lining 12 and the other to the polished surface 2.
The disc 8 engages by two fins 8 'in the grooves of the disc 11 to which it is integral in rotation.
The chamber 3 is in constant communication with the compressed air tank using a tube f (fig'4 and 5) connected at 14 to the flange II * On the rod 10 secured by a nut and locknut to the cover 9 is detachably wedged the lever 15 provided with a handle and shown schematically by the mixed line 15 in FIGS. and 3, which carries an index 16 moving on the dial 17 secured to the flange of the body 1 of the valve * The body 1 carries a circular groove 18 ', in which slides the elastic tooth 18 of the lever 15 which engages in a socket for each of the positions of the handle, except for the "closed" position, where the groove has an opening through which the tooth 18 can pass to attach or detach the handle.
Elastic stops are also provided for the intermediate positions to momentarily disengage walking in action.
On the polished surface 2 the conduits 4 open into holes 4m, 4n, 4r, 4s, respectively four speeds, arranged, two by two on circumferences of different diameter on one half of the polished surface (fig. 2 ). The disc drawer 8 has below, on either side of a diameter, the chambers 8a and 8b communicating with the aid
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of a diametral duct with a central hole which puts them in constant communication with the atmosphere through the duct 6 of the center of the polished surface 2.
The chamber 8a is circular and in the neutral position (fig.2) it is superimposed by a narrowed part only on the holes 4r and 4s, and by a wider part on the holes 4m and 4n. The chamber 8b has an external diameter such that it can be superimposed only on the holes 4m and 4n except at one end where it can also be superimposed on the holes 4r and 4s. A small radial chamber 8c of the disc 8 extends between the diameters on which the holes 4m, 4n and 4r, 4s are drilled respectively.
Chamber 8a moving from the neutral position to the higher steps, abandons holes 4m, 4n, 4r, 4s one at a time, with the abandoned hole immediately coming to lie below radial intermediate chamber 8c, while that the previously abandoned hole is placed in communication with the chamber 8b connected, like the chamber 8a, with the atmosphere. It follows that only one of the four cylinders receives compressed air while the other three are in communication with the atmosphere, as clearly indicated in fig. 4, which schematically shows the position of the pneumatic circuits in the second gear position.
The holes are far enough from each other so that in the rotation of the disc 8 to pass from one speed to the next or the previous one, before the compressed air is: introduced into one cylinder the other has had time to completely discharge; this intermediate position is shown in fig.3. If the "closed" position was not necessary, the shape of the chambers 8a and 8b could obviously be that of a circular chamber interrupted by the chamber 8c. The need for this "closed" position is the reason for the special shape of the chamber 8b in relation to the special shape of the chamber 8a.
Fig. 5 shows
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
clearly that in the "closed" position of the drawer 8 none of the holes 4m, 4n, 4r, 4s communicate with the compressed air tank or with the atmosphere; holes are plugged as if their e ducts did not exist. The shape of the chambers and the position of the holes are such that to change from one speed to the other one passes through a short interval of "neutral" position, which ensures that only one cylinder at a time can accommodate. compressed air.
The speed change control is very easy and cannot give rise to any wrong maneuver.
The constructive details may vary from what has been described and shown by way of example within the scope of the invention.
