<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Exhaust for internal combustion engines of automobiles or motorcycles".
This invention relates to an exhaust for internal combustion engines of automobiles or motorcycles where the violence of the exhaust gases is damped by causing alternate expansions and contractions and energetic cooling of these gases.
For this purpose, the exhaust according to the invention is traversed longitudinally by a certain number of tubes which are freely traversed by the air in the direction of travel of the vehicle. The muffler is fitted with an emission collector, that is to say a chamber receiving the gases which have passed through the muffler before their exit at @

outside. In this chamber open the air tubes which thus function as exhaust gas aspirators.
The latter undergo on their exit from the last element of the pot and thanks to the inclination of the slots which they must cross, a whirlwind movement which facilitates with the suction action of the air tubes the escape of the gases under the minimum contrapression. relative to the engine chamber. The result is silent discharge and greater energy production at the same time as fuel savings.
The construction of the muffler is such that it can be easily disassembled into its components for periodic cleaning. The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the exhaust.
Figure 2 is a cross section.
The muffler has an outer casing 1, provided on the gas inlet side, with a flat cover 2, provided with a central gas inlet tube 3 and on the exhaust side with a funnel-shaped cover 4 connected to a central tube 5, gas outlet. The latter limits the chamber 4 ′ or the exhaust gas and air collector.
The envelope 1 forms the first chamber occupied by lesgaz arriving from tube 3; it contains a cylindrical box 6 with a cover 7 and 8 forming the second chamber and held in the first with the aid of suitable spacers. The chamber 1 is provided at the end opposite to that of the gas inlet (tube 3) with slits 6 'inclined at 120 through which the gases pass from the first to the second chamber. This is subdivided into two compartments by a concentric longitudinal tube 9 into which the gases enter through holes 9 'made at the end opposite to that of the slots 6'.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The tube 9, after passing through the cover 8, is extended into the chamber 4 'by an internal exhaust tube 10 up to the vicinity of the mouth of the external exhaust tube 5.
The gases thus follow a tortuous path and undergo several reversals of direction, which kills the Science of the discharge. The slots 6 'have a helical shape with an inclination of about 120, which has the effect of imparting to the gas streams a vortex movement which facilitates their movement. The box 6 is traversed longitudinally by the air tubes 12 arranged in a cylindrical area in a variable number depending on the proportions of the exhaust. By the effect of the movement of the vehicle, the tubes 12 receive the air through funnel-shaped mouthpieces 12a and flow into the chamber 4 'where the air stream serves as an injector stream for the exhaust gases. through tube 10.
The function of the tubes 12 is above all to cool the gases from the box 6 which licks them outside. These tubes 12 can be dismantled with the cover 2 of the casing, and retained to the cover 8 of the muffler by nuts 13 and locknuts, the reaction of tightening the nuts being supported by the cover 2, thanks to the fins 11a of the deflection cone 11. The central tube 10 is supported on one side by a stop ring 10a against the cover 8, which is fitted on the other side in a plug 11b, forming part of the cane deviation. As the cover 4 of the casing is also fixed by screws, the dismantling of the whole device for cleaning the chambers 6, 9 and 10 through which the gases pass in alternately opposite directions is very easy.
The construction described and shown has been given merely as an indication and may vary in its details without departing from the scope of the invention.
