Fig.1 montre le silencieux en coupe longitudinale.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Muffler for internal combustion engines.
The object of the present invention is a silencer which suppresses the noise of the exhaust of internal combustion engines without, however, reducing the efficiency of these engines.
Silencer constructions are already known which reduce the exhaust noise in internal combustion engines, owing to the fact that instead of the detonation occurring at the point where the gases exit, they tend to obtain a gas stream corresponding to uniform pressure and speed. For this purpose, different means have been used, such as for example: device acting like injectors in the body of the silencer, the addition of fresh air, the removal of energy in large expansion chambers, use of friction and swirl elements such as funnels, screens, chambers, nozzles, spirals, threads and the like.
Good damping, obtained by one or more of these means, presents only relatively few difficulties; however, we have so far not succeeded in obtaining good damping in a space

limited without avoiding a reaction on the engine.
According to the invention, a noise damping and polarization screen is arranged in the muffler, the screen through which the exhaust gases are conducted into the open air, which produces the desired action.
An example of application of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows the silencer in longitudinal section.
Fig.2 shows it in section along the line Si-, 4 of fig.l.
Fig.3 is a section along the line B-B of fig.1 and
Fig. 4 a section along line C-C of the same figure.
The pipes b and c are arranged in the outer casing a of the silencer and communicate, through the slots e and ± with the interior space of this casing a. A conical partition d, the opening d 'of which is smaller than the opening x, through which the exhaust gases enter the silencer, is arranged between the pipes b and c. The sections of these pipes b and c widen in relation to that of the inlet x.
The polarization and noise damping screen, which screen, in the present case, consists of a helical wire brush is introduced into the pipe b.
This helical brush made of metal wires consists of a helix with one or more steps formed by several layers of metal wires of great resistance placed one on top of the other and arranged around a rod h or a twisted metal wire. The various metal wires i of this helix, which is well proportioned to fit in the pipe b and which is fixed there by means of the screw k, apply strongly against the walls of this pipe.
The silencer can be assembled in the simplest way.
The conical partition d is placed on the pipe c and, over this, the pipe b is pushed in. The rim of the bulkhead and the corresponding end of pipe b are slightly tapered, so that pipe b cannot slide over pipe c. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
two pipes thus assembled are then introduced into the pipe a, the two ends of which are conical. The conical lower part of the pipe c comes to rest on the wall of the pipe a, the taper of which corresponds to it in an appropriate manner. The helical brush is finally introduced into the pipe b and the whole construction is fixed by means of the bolt k. By releasing and removing this bolt k, the silencer can be dismantled in the simplest way.
The mode of action of the silencer is as follows:
The exhaust gases, coming from the engine, enter through the opening x in the pipe c. A part of these gases flows through the opening d 'in the pipe b, while the other part arrives through the slots f in the pipe a where it expands. The gas core, flowing at high speed through the opening d ', sucks, through the slots in the pipe b, the gases in pipe a and it is conducted, together with the gases thus removed, through of the spiral brush. In this way, on the one hand, a helical movement is imparted to the gas stream and on the other hand, the gas is uniformly divided and then, as a result of the intervals between the elements of the brush, directed in a straight line.
The main advantage of the silencer described consists essentially in the improvement made both to the damping of noise and to the back pressure of the exhaust, given that the shocks thereof are elastically balanced by the helical brush made of metal wires. . In addition, it is possible, as already explained, by the single removal of a bolt, to dismantle the silencer, so that the interior cleaning thereof can be done in the simplest way. This muffler can mainly be used for automobiles and motorcycles.
