<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"A method of inserting an elastic cord into the hem of a stocking or other similar articles, on a flat knitting or plucking machine."
Stockings or other hosiery articles are already known comprising an elastic cord in their hem. It is in particular a known embodiment which performs particularly well for this purpose.
An endless cord of solid rubber, and not covered with a sheath, is disposed in the border, the advantages of this mode of exile consist in the fact that a cord of solid rubber, more particularly of solid para rubber, is of an extremely long duration, it does not relax, it is washable and resists boiling temperature; finally, it does not have a sewn seal capable of being released easily. It will therefore not be necessary to remove the elastic cord to do any operation on the bottom.
In order to introduce an endless elastic cord of this kind into the hem, the procedure has so far been as follows: In a stocking or any other similar hosiery coming out of the loom in the finished state, hem open, so do not fold it back on the loom in the usual way. The endless elastic cord is threaded over the upper end of the knitting, intended to constitute the inside face of the hem and, if necessary, it is fixed by a seam. We then fold back the part that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
will become the upper face of the hem and sew it with the bottom logg in order to make the hem.
In this case, however, it will not only take a special machine for the. sewing the hem, but also performing a special operation, which significantly increases the cost price of such a stocking or a similar article, On the other hand, the seam, and particularly the reinforcement of the edge, decrease the bottom value,
Stockings are also known, the usual hem of which contains. an elastic consisting of a braid of rubberized fabric, which is threaded through the finished hem to be sewn at its ends, However, this embodiment is not very advantageous, since the rubber braid relaxes, the Extremely thin rubber threads, which are woven into the fabric, break quickly and stitching the elastic requires one more operation.
Compared to the solid rubber execution in the form of a ring, this embodiment could only be maintained thanks to the fact that it is not necessary to sew the hem, as is the case. solid rubber. In any case, the implementation of the first form of execution is therefore much cheaper.
The object of the present invention is based on the principle of providing an endless elastic cord in the ordinary hem, closed by finishing, of long stockings or the like.
According to the invention, the procedure is such that after the usual finishing of the knitted parts of the hem on the straight-line knitting machine to be picked, a rubber ring corresponding to the width of this knitting is slipped from the front side on this same knit, said ring then being enclosed in the finished hem and closed by the subsequent transfer of the part to be hemmed on the needles of the loom. To this end, it is preferable to stretch the rubber ring on an expander mandrel, corresponding to the width of the part to be hemmed, to tighten it simultaneously.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
immediately with this expander on the needles.
By way of example, the appended drawing represents an embodiment of the object of the invention, in this drawing, we see: Fig.l- An endless elastic cord of the known type.
Fig. 2- The way in which the elastic cord is mounted on a stent.
Fig.3- The part intended to form the hem which is pulled by means of the take-up bar to make the hem, the rubber ring tight on the expander being provided behind the bar.
Fig. 4- The way in which the rubber ring is mounted with its expander, on the part intended to form the hem Fig. 5- The part intended to form the hem, uncovered and containing the enlarged rubber ring, and
Fig. 6- The upper part of a long stocking completely finished with the ring in place,
The rubber ring 1 (fig.1) is stretched over an expander mandrel 2, which is wider than the part 5 of the knit intended to form the hem (fig.2).
During the manufacture of said part 5, the pulling ribbons 3 are placed between the rubber ring 1 and the expander mandrel (fig. 3) 0r, one proceeds in the usual way to the execution of the part intended to form the hem 5, on the needles 4 of the straight-line knitting loom and the usual pulling by means of the transfer bar 6.
The part to form the hem 5 being taken, the rubber ring 1 is moved a little by hand from its expander 2 in order to put the assembly on the part which will form the hem 5, by means of the transfer bar 6 (fig. 4). Then we unhook the draw ribbons 3, then by transferring and the drawing end to hem suspended from the needles of the drawing comb 6, we fold up part 5 in the usual way to make a hem as seen on fig. 5.
The rubber ring 1 being in the state
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
extension, is therefore enclosed in the hem, and if it is a stocking, we add along the bottom to the hem. As soon as the bottom is finished, the expander 2 is removed from the ring 1 which tightens and then returns to its original dimension (fig. 6)
This done, there is no longer any obstacle to possibly tightening the endless elastic ring 1 on the transfer bar 6; for this purpose, however, it will be necessary to give the rubber ring 1 some extension by hand and then thread it over the hemmed part 5, but this could compress part 5 so that the latter would suffer too much. of draw on both sides.
It is therefore preferable to provide a special expander mandrel 2 for the extension of the rubber ring 1. Of course, this expander mandrel may be of any suitable shape different from that shown in the drawing.
The method which is the subject of the invention applies not only to a hem for stockings, but to that of all other similar articles, underwear, etc. Likewise, the rubber ring may be of any type, for example it may be perforated or obtained by weaving.
