<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Dans cette position, il est à remarquer que le secteur 9 est fortement appliqué contre l'entretoise 9' par sui- te de la charge qu'il supporte ;
DETELAGE..- Le véhicule remorqué est immobilisé, la poi- gnée 15 est relevée à la main ou par le dispositif de commande montré sur la fig.8 en appuyant sur la pédale 26;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Spherical housing with ratchet segment for automatic coupling of towed vehicles with a head with wear compensation surface.
The object of the invention consists of a spherical housing with a ratchet sector receiving and retaining a trailer head bearing a wear take-up surface. This bpi- tier is hollowed out in the shape of a sphere, the radius of which corresponds exactly to that of the head, also spherical, carried by the towed vehicle so as to form, by their union and their concordance, a homogeneous whole constituting a one and the same appa.
, two-piece rail whose operation can only take place by their junction.
The aim of the invention is to achieve, with very simple means and robust components, automatic coupling and semi-automatic uncoupling.
The invention is characterized more particularly by a spherical housing comprising articulated parts actuated, one automatically and the other semi-automatically, and by a trailer head carrying a wear take-up surface.
The spherical housing and its trailer head are shown in the accompanying drawings given by way of example.

, The following box in FIGS. 1 to 7 is constituted by a hollowed out surface in the form of a sphere of the same dimension as the coupling head. 3, the lower and central part 9 'of this box is movable on a journal 10 ; this part 9 is provided, on the one hand, with an arm 11 connected to a return spring 12 and, on the other hand, to a stop 13 coming into contact with the corresponding stop 14 of the latch 14 '' integral with the handle rod 15, on each side of which is fixed one of the ends 16 of the return springs 17.
The lower part of the box constituting the support base of the head 3 of the trailer is located at a level slightly lower than that of the edge giving access to the re-entry of the sphere into the box; this difference
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
level increases traction safety. This box is integral with the part 18 fixing it to the frame 19 of the tractor vehicle.
Finally, an access ramp 20 ending in the semi-cylindrical-shaped box, the radius of which of this ramp is slightly greater than that of the setting head 3 to facilitate the coupling and unhitching operations which take place. do as follows HITCHING.- The vehicle to be towed being immobilized, the towing vehicle moves back in a determined direction so that the trailer head 3 comes to engage on the access ramp 20 (fig.l).
By the continuity of the retraction movement of the plotter, the head 3 (fig. 2 and 9) comes into contact with the movable part 9 of the housing and forces the latter to tilt on its journal 10; in this movement (following the direction of arrow 13 ') the stop 13 will meet the stop 14 of the latch 14' 'and, as a result of this meeting, the latch 14' 'tundra around the journal 21, determining the tension of the return springs 17, the attachment point 22 of which is arranged so that this tension is used to alternately maintain the handle 15 in the position corresponding to that of the cocking to lock the head 3 or that of disarming to release head 3 of the trailer.
As the tractor continues to retreat (fig. 3 and 10), the end of the box 13 arrives at the end of the stop 14 at point 23 and, finally, the stop 13 escapes the stop 14; at this moment, the tension of the springs 17 acting very quickly brings the stop 14 of the latch 14 "back to the stop 13, the radius of curvature of which is the same and by their large contact surface produces the snap. The central part 9 of the box is then immobilized and the automatic coupling is carried out by the latch 14 '' bracing itself on sector 9 and on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
journals 10 and 21 (position shown in fig. 4). d 11
In this position, it should be noted that the sector 9 is strongly applied against the spacer 9 'by following the load which it supports;
by the resistance opposed by the trailer, the head 3 also presses on the rear part of the sector 9 and urges the latter to rise by turning around the journal 10, but by following its contact with the lock 14 '' against which it is braced and this all the more strong as the pressure of the head 3 will be higher, that is to say that the more the tensile strength will increase, the more the closure of the box retaining the head 3 will be strong . For the opening movement of the sector 9 to be able to occur, the abutment surface 14 of the latch 14 '' should no longer exist, which is completely impossible.
A coupling box is therefore produced using moving parts with stops between them in such a powerful way that it cannot be envisaged that they break or open accidentally.
Thus obtained, this coupling essentially constitutes a ball joint allowing very large amplitude oscillations in all planes; it also allows the vehicles thus connected to be able to turn in angles which can exceptionally go up to 1000 (fig. 7) on each side of the longitudinal axis of the towing vehicle, this result constitutes a very great progress on all the couplings currently in use.
DISCONNECTION ..- The towed vehicle is immobilized, the handle 15 is raised by hand or by the control device shown in fig.8 by pressing the pedal 26;
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the handle 15 occupies the position shown in fig. 5 and 12, which has the effect of removing the stop 14 from the latch 14 '= and the stop 13 from the sector 9. In this movement, the springs 17 move around their attachment point 22, by their tension they keep the handle 15 in the vertical position.
Once this maneuver is finished, the tractor moves forward, by this movement, the head 3 constituting a fixed point forces the central part 9 to rise (fig. 6 and 13); in this movement, the angle 24 of the sector 9 meets the stop 14 'which it moves upwards, thus returning the handle 15 in the direction of the arrow 25. The angle of movement is calculated in such a way. that the action of the tension of the springs 17 is exerted to return the handle 15 to the cocking position shown in fig.l and 9; this position is obtained at the precise moment when. the angle 24 leaves its contact with the stop 14 '; at this moment, the head 3 is placed at the level of the access ramp 20 and the unhitching takes place very easily.
As a result of this operation, the moving parts of the box placed on the towing vehicle are again all arranged to achieve a new coupling which is obtained without any additional maneuver and will therefore be fully automatic.
The coupling head 3 (fig. 14 to 17) is spherical in shape, it is integral with an arm 27 fixed to the towed vehicle.
This trailer head is perforated, along a vertical axis to receive and fix a buffer 28 (fig. 15), the smooth part of which ends in a cap 29 for-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
covering a portion of a sphere whose radius is equal to that of sphere 3. The buffer 28 is fixed in the sphere by a screw thread and is held there by means of a brake constituted by a steel blade 30 the ends of which penetrate, under the action of the tightening of the screw 31 in the interior
EMI7.1
xieur des îilets pas Ô "- L-1)) i, OV, ttmwIL4, ± - through the threads of the pitch of vi8YêmPêCEant afnsr-by this jamming any vertical displacement of the buffer 28 in the trailer head 3.
Thus constituted, it can be seen that, only the surface formed by the cap 29 of the sphere, or trailer head 3, being the one receiving all the load, the wear of this part is necessarily faster than all the others and that 'it suffices, after having loosened the small screw 31 canceling the effect of the brake, to screw the buffer 28 into the sphere 3 to catch it.
This arrangement, like that shown in fig. 17 constituting only a constructive variation, makes it possible to achieve practically a most appreciable progress, because the movable buffer solves the problem posed by experience which has shown that, consequently from the numerous coupling and uncoupling operations to which the trailers are subjected, this results in wear which is localized at the point of tangency of the sphere with the ramp or the access member; the repeated friction of these two parts causes a flattening of the lower surface of the patella which thus loses its original spherical shape. It is then impossible to restore it to this shape without reducing its diameter; it is therefore necessary to consider replacing the entire ball joint, which is very expensive.
This drawback is completely eliminated by the use of the buffer which, by its displacement in
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the orifice 4 to compensate for the wear and if the flattening becomes too great, it is easy either to grind the part 29 by giving it again the curvature which it has lost, or simply to change the pad 28; but it is no longer necessary to change the sphere 3 which allows an indefinite use of this one and consequently, a significant economy.
The% -% pad having a very ordinary shape, it is possible to use a hard metal for its manufacture and to treat it, then, thermally to give it an even greater hardness in order to limit its wear to a minimum.
This improved hitch can be applied very easily to different types of tractors; this ease of adaptation is obtained first: by the small number of parts which compose it and, then, by the fixity on the chagun of the vehicles of the two main elements: coupling head and housing. It thus achieves the most significant progress on similar devices currently known and is characterized more particularly by the latter by the use of a spherical coupling head forming, as has already been said, a ball joint allowing both vehicles always hitched to take all angles and follow all the unevenness of the ground without compromising the strength of the hitching parts.
It is always understood that the parts constituting this coupling may vary in their shapes and sizes, without thereby changing the invention @ which has just been described.
