Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  A MULTIPLICATION SYSTEM FOR BICYCLES Until now, the chain wheel, controlled by the pedals to actuate the rear wheel of the bicycle, was round.

   The object of the present invention is to give it another, irregular shape, approaching the oval, as can be seen from the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a front view of this wheel, FIG. 2 is a partial schematic view of a bicycle and FIGS. 3 and 4 represent the chain tensioning device.

   Fig. 1 shows that the toothed wheel A is composed of two identical periods a and a ', each corresponding to half a stroke of a pedal B. It is thus that what should happen for a pedal will happen exactly for the other.

   The whole of these two periods gives to the wheel A, a shape approaching an oval. the combination of this wheel A with the wheel C which comprises

 controls the rear wheel of the bicycle through chain D, gives the same effect as if we had a variable multiplication at all times of a pedal turn.

   This gives the effort to be produced by the cyclist an elasticity which makes it much easier and lighter.

   This multiplication gives a result equal from the point of view of the distance crossed at each revolution of the crankset to the multiplication by the ordinary round wheel) having an equivalent number of teeth; given the shape of the new toothed wheel and the position indicated on the branches of the crankset, it is certain that, at the moment when the cyclist has to make his effort, that is to say when one of the pedals arrives at the top of its travel, the upper part of the oval wheel being at a lower level than the ordinary wheel, the effort to be produced is less long and the expenditure of energy to be supplied is less to bring the pedal into position. the bottom line - though again the result is the same from a development point of view.

   To be able to achieve this result, it is necessary to establish a chain tensioner which acts automatically.

    This tensioner is established as follows: frame E of the bicycle (fig. 2, 3 & 4 is fixed a fixed part F, to which is hinged, on a pivot G, a lever H, forming a yoke to receive the small toothed wheel I, mounted on ball bearings.

   Between part F and lever H is interposed a coil spring J which pulls on this lever, so as to force the wheel I to always be in engagement with the internal part of the chain.
To prevent, in a sudden movement, the wheel I cannot come out of the links, of the chain D, it is established on the fixed part F, a stopper K which stops the travel of the lever H.

Claims (1)

REVENDICATION. 1 In a bicycle, the application of a chain wheel, on the side of the pedals, of an irregular shape approximating the oval, so as to produce, during one revolution of the pedal, a constantly variable multiplication, to produce a elasticity of effort to be produced by the cyclist as described and shown in the drawings. 2 In combination with the chain wheel with variable radius forming the claim, an automatically acting chain tensioner, consisting of a small toothed wheel pressing towards the inside of the chain, this wheel being mounted on a lever articulated on a fixed part attached to the frame of the bicycle, with the interposition of a coil spring counteracting the thrust of the chain on this wheel, with a stopper limiting the lifting of the lever, all as described and shown at drawings.
