<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans ce qui suit, on a décrit, à titre d'exemple, une boudineuse pour métaux exécutée conformément à l'invention définie ci-dessus en se reportant au dessin schématique annexé sur lequel: la fige 1 est une coupe schématique d'une boudineuse pour métaux du type utilisé pour l'application d'un revêtement de plomb à un câble électrique, la figure représentant la boudineuse à la fin de l'opération de boudinage, avant le remplacement de la pointe et de la filière;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to metal extruders" having been the subject of a patent application filed
The present invention relates to presses used for the manufacture by extrusion or extrusion of tubes of a certain length, made of lead or a similar metal, intended to constitute, for example, the coating of an electric cable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In presses or extruders of the type to which the present invention applies, the metal is pressed through the annular space included between two circular dies. (For convenience, in what follows, the outer die and "tip" the die closest to the inside of the press will be called "die"). At the end of an extrusion operation, the space between the tip and the die remains full of metal.
When it is desired to modify the dimensions of the tube which is to be produced by extrusion, it is necessary to remove the tip and the die from the press and replace them with other similar members corresponding to the new dimensions. can be removed easily because it is accessible from the outside of the press.
The metal which remains between the die and the point can constitute an obstacle to the removal of the latter and it makes, in any case, impossible its replacement by a point of larger dimensions. , It is therefore necessary to take measures to be able to remove some of the metal. To this end, until now, the metal has been melted or the metal cut out of the part placed in front of the point by pushing the latter, forcibly, forward after having cut a sufficiently large opening at the point. end of the press and after having introduced, in this place, a ring intended to serve as an external member for the extruder which makes the coating.
In accordance with the present invention, an improved organization has been provided for
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
facilitate the removal and replacement of the tip. In accordance with this organization, a tubular cutting tool or trephine is introduced into the extruder, instead of the die and the organ or parts which support it immediately and after the removal of said parts, and is rotated. said bit, while advancing it, until it has passed through most of the metal to be removed and so as to leave only a thin layer in the direct vicinity of the point. The trephine is then removed and sufficient pressure is applied to the posterior part of the point to advance it a short distance, breaking the thin ring of metal which has not been cut.
The tip can then be easily pushed or pulled forward to remove it from the extruder, the tip bringing with it said metal ring. Due to the fact that a ring can be cut with a diameter larger than the maximum diameter of the point, a new point can easily be inserted through the opening in the metal.
In what follows, there is described, by way of example, an extruder for metals executed in accordance with the invention defined above with reference to the appended schematic drawing in which: Fig 1 is a schematic section of an extruder for metals of the type used for applying a lead coating to an electric cable, the figure showing the extruder at the end of the extrusion operation, before replacement of the tip and the die;
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
fig. 2 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1 but after removal of the die, said figure showing the operation of the bit; fig. 3, finally, is a section, on a larger scale, showing the details of the bit.
-Before the extrusion, the lead is contained in a semi-molten or plastic state in a chamber 1, of annular shape, comprising a lead reservoir 2 and surrounding a support 3 for the tip.
The lead is introduced in the molten state through a suitable charging orifice 4. The output of the lead takes place under the effect of the displacement of the piston 5 from its original position shown in FIG. 2 up to its extreme position shown in FIG. 1. The movement (or stroke) during which the pressure is created is performed by a hydraulic piston 6 carrying an extension 7 on which the piston 5 is fixed, the hydraulic piston 6 operating under the effect of the water which is under pressure inside cylinder 8.
The metal tube or liner is formed by extruding the plastic metal between a die 9 and a tip 10. The diameter and wall thickness of the tube or liner are controlled by the dimensions and positions of these. two parts of the extruder. Inside the lead tank 2, it maintains, by means of a robust screw thread, a main block 11 in which is housed a die support 12 which slides in said block and which supports the die 9. A sleeve 13 screwed into the main block 11 serves to hold the die support 12 in place, despite the pressure of the metal subjected to the extrusion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Axial openings 14 and 15 in the hydraulic piston 6 and in the tip holder 1 provide passage for the cable from the rear of the extruder to the point where the metal coating is applied to said cable. . Fig. 1 shows the metal tube 16 which remains after the coated cable has been detached from the extruder.
It is necessary to change the tip and the die to allow the coating of a cable of another diameter.
The support sleeve 13 is withdrawn from the interior of the main block 11 allowing the removal of the die support 12 by means of a tool which screws onto the thread formed on the wall of the cylindrical passage through the die. center of said support. The die 9 is removed at the same time as its support. Removal of tip 10 is prevented by the presence of a cylindrical mass 17 of solidified metal.
Figure 2 shows the operation of cutting a metal cylinder capable of being so removed from the anterior side of the point 10 by means of a cutting tool or bit 18, the details of which are shown in FIG. 3. The bit 18 is made up of a cylindrical part 29 which carries, at one of its ends, a milling cutter 19 screwed onto said cylindrical part and fixed by means of locking bolts 30. A sleeve is provided. threaded cylindrical 31 which is force-fitted to the cylindrical part 29 and which is prevented from turning by countersunk screws 32, the dimensions of the sleeve 31 being such
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
/ actuated that it can be screwed into the threaded opening of the main block 11. The milling cutter 19 has teeth the cutting edge of which is designated by 33 in FIG. 3.
The tool is thundered by means of a helical toothed wheel 20 supported within a suitable housing; wheel 20 is connected to the cylindrical part 29 by means of a slide 23 capable of sliding in a groove 24 and engages with a worm 21, / by means of a suitable transmission, from an electric motor 22. When the tool is rotated, the latter advances under the guiding action of the threads of the main block 11 onto which said tool is screwed, the cutting edges 33 tending to remove a cylindrical block of metal in front of the tip 10.
It is essential that the cutting is stopped before the metal block is completely separated in order to prevent possible damage to the point; to this end, the au- @ of the tool is limited by the length of the guide threads and a pin 34 can be fixed on the tool which makes the advance of said tool visible. The lead chips produced by the cutting are pushed away from the teeth of the cutter 19 by the chamfered edges 35, which prevents any seizure of the cutter.
Pressure is exerted on the posterior end of the tip 10 by a rod or ejection bar 25 having a head 26 shaped so as to fit inside the conical hole of the tip. The bar which is introduced from the rear of the extruder has, at its outer part, a "T" piece 27 integral with two
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
rods 28 fixed to the end of the hydraulic piston 6, the latter being returned to its initial position shown in FIG. 2 before cutting.
Slight movement of the piston causes the tip to advance and the remaining thin metal wall to break through this tip, after which the tip can be advanced to the front of the extruder and the tip. 'remove by any suitable means-,
The bit is designed for the removal of a block of metal with a diameter such as to provide a clear passage for the largest tip that can be used with the extruder.
