8. On voit.

Fig. 26 is a partial soot, on an even larger scale, of FIG. 25 to indicate the flow of the metal.
The machine shown in the drawing com takes a shear and a transfer mechanism to cut the blank and bring it to the desired location.
As these mechanisms can be constituted in any suitable manner and as they are well known, they have not been shown and described in detail. In fig. 1, the sheared blank 01 is located opposite the first die Dl.
The die D1 has a cylindrical passage 1.of cross section smaller than that of the blank 01, this passage being connected by a conical fitting 2 to a circular chamber 3 of the matrix and whose diameter is equal to that of the blank 01. The tool Tl includes a ca vity 4 a @ -ant. the. same section as the chamber 3, the external face of said tool being cllanfrei-linked, as shown at 5. to reduce its bulk.
After the blank 01 has been brought opposite the die D1 by a transfer mechanism, the tool T1 advances, as shown in FIG. 2, to push the blank into the passage 1, to form a pal- o_ttrii- sion tail 7. Part 6 of the blank forms a head binds undergoing work to. reduced cold.
At the end of this operation and during the retraction (the tool, an expelling member El. Intervenes at a conveniently chosen moment to eject the blank 02 out of the die Dl so that this blank can be collected by a mechanism transfer to the matrix.
Fig. 3 shows the blank 02 obtained in la. exit from the. first matrix.
On the end. 4, the blank 02 is in the eye of a die D _ in which is provided a passage evlindrique 10 in which works an expelling punch 1i2 including. the diameter is the same as that of the tail 7 of the blank. The die also comprises a conical chamber 11 extended by a shallow eplindrique part 1.1a intended to shape the head of the blank.
The tool T2 is constituted in such a way that it is. can serve as a housing for a die-forging block 13, made of hardened metal and in which is formed a cavity comprising a frustoconical wall 14 and a spherical bottom 15.
Fig. 5 shows that, when the tool T2 has driven back - the scab in the die D2, the tail 7 is not. so to speak not effeet.ués, but that the metal, which previously formed the head 6 of the blank 02, is deformed in this way. fill chamber 1.1. of the inatricc. A blank 03 is thus obtained, the head of which comprises a frustoconical part 16! T, a cylindrical part 17, another hole-forming part 1S and a rounded end face 10.
As this operation corresponds to the first cold work of the head of the blank and as Bette head, obtained by the operation illustrated in fig. 5, is conical and. does not have a much larger diameter than that of the unworked head 6 of the blank 02, the metal is not subjected to considerable cold work, so that it is still in a relatively ductile state to undergo the punching that will follow.
Fig. 6 shows the blank 03 obtained at the exit of the second die. Fig. 7 shows part of the ineanisine during the punching operation with the third die.
The header II, capable of sliding in a reciprocating motion on a frame to approach and move away from the die, comprises an annular boss 20 in the axis of which is formed a bore 21 in which is fitted a guide bush 22 held axially at 23. A tool comprising a pressure sleeve .S is adjusted so as to be able to slide smoothly inside this bush.
A ledge 24, to. the rear end of the sleeve S, prevents the release of the latter towards the front after the assembly of these various parts.
11n punch P and a pulling sleeve 32 are housed in the sleeve S and. are kept naked in eelui-ei by a plug 25 engaged in the bore 21 of the boss 20. The plug 25 has a cylindrical extension 26 on which the bore 27 of the sleeve S can slide. A plunger 29, fitted into another plunger 28, is engaged on the head 30 of the punch P, this. together, as well as the puller man chon 32, being. housed in the bore 27, which comprises two parts of different diameters, of the sleeve S.
The sleeve S com carries a bore 33 of which. the diameter is equal to that of the head of the screw that we want to obtain. the puller sleeve 32 is capable of sliding in the bore 33, its outer diameter being the same as that of the bore 33. The front end 32n of the sleeve 32 small come into contact with the head of the blank and this contact. is maintained by the mechanism described below.
The rear part of the sleeve 32 comprises a flange 34 on which several rods 35 bear, these rods passing through holes 36 formed in the plungers 28 and 29 while being integral with a plunger 37. An extension 38 of the plunger 37 has a rounded head 39 and is intended to cooperate with the active face 40 of a cam C mounted on a pin 41 journalled in the header slide. Cam C is operated in the manner described below. In the slide is inéna #, ée a slot 42 to receive the cam C. A wedge W intervenes to maintain the plug 25 in its working position. The exact adjustment of its position is effected by means of a threaded rod parallel to the axis of the plug 25 and which cooperates with the wedge W.
The lateral face 43 of the wedge rests on an adjacent inclined face 44 of the slot 42.
The fi-. 8 shows the control of the puller sleeve 32. In this figure, the clamping sleeve S is not cut, but the extension 38 of the plunger 37 which is in contact is marked again. with the active face of cam C.
the cam C is actuated by a pusher 51 which bears on a heel 52 of this cam. The pusher passes through a hole 53 made in the slide, and its upper end 54 is in contact with the end 55 of a lever L articulated at 56 to a support 57 mounted on the slide, this lever moving with said slide. The other end of the lever L carries a roller 58 which cooperates with a cam 59 mounted on a fixed part 60 of the machine. In fig. 8, the slide is shown at sa. forward position and, when it moves back, the roller 58 engages on a ramp 61 of the cam 59 to force the pusher downwards, which causes the cam C to pivot to move the plunger 37 to the right of FIG. 8. We can see.
on the fi-. 7 that the sleeve 32 is thus pushed back also to the right. The cam C can be given a shape such that, when the slide moves back, the sleeve 32 advances by an equal length, key so that, in reality, the stripping sleeve remains stationary with respect to the die.
Figs. 9 and 9a show an example of a punch used to obtain a cavity, (the hexagonal section, in the head of the screw. It has been found that, when the hexagonal part 31 of the punch is extended by a hexagonal part 31a, moreover Large dimension facilitates punch clearance The tapered end 31b of the punch facilitates entry of the punch during punching Obviously, the shape of the punch can be changed to give the cavity the shape. wanted.
The blank 03, shown in fig. 6 and. whose head has only been subjected to a shaping operation to give it the. preferred form, is brought by the transfer mechanism facing the matrix D3 of FIG. 7. When the header slide advances, the free end of the punch comes into contact with the head of the blank 03 and pushes back the tail 7 into the passage of the die D3. The punch is introduced into the blank by the contact of the plunger 28 with the extension 26 of the support plug 25.
In fig. 7, the punch comes. to introduce the blank 03 into the die D3, but has not yet entered the head of the blank 03 to form the cavity therein. It can also be seen that the sleeve S has advanced so that its bore 33 surrounds the head of the blank and it is important to note that, due to the conical shape of the head, a gap Z remains.
An advantageous method of advancing the sleeve S to the position shown in fig. 7 is to open a compressed air inlet behind the flange 24 of the sleeve so that, through the opening of the air distributor. at a suitable time, the air pressure can advance the sleeve S. The cam C and the control of the stripper sleeve 32 are such that when the slider advances to the position of FIG. 7, the cam C can be moved to the left by the reaction of the sleeve 32 and the plunger 37 on the head of the blank 03.
The ramp 61 of the cam 59 (fig. 8) is. such that a clearance remains constantly for the pusher 53 so that the. cam C can be easily moved to the. left, as described.
Fig. 10 shows the end of the punching, the slide having fully advanced. Part 31 of the punch has formed a cavity in the head of the blank, which gives the final blank 04. During punching, the metal pledges this. in the gap V formed between the conical head and the sleeve .8 f14 '. 7).
The stripper sleeve 32 continued to reeuler relative to the slide during the end of the advancement of the punch, and the. cam 59 is arranged, preferably, so that at the end of this advancement there is a clearance between the end of the pulling sleeve and the stubborn blank.
Fig. 11 shows the start of the slide backward towards the left of this figure. When the slide back begins, the punch has a tendency to disengage the blank from the die, but, as soon as the play between the head of the blade and the end of the sleeve 32 is absorbed, the blank cannot go forward. When the retreat continues, the. fixed cam 59 intervenes to push back, using the lever L and the pusher 51, the cam C to the right so that the sleeve 32 remains stationary with respect to. the matrix.
The rear part of the. sleeve 22 then comes into contact with the rim 24 chi man chon S and moves the latter away from the. head of the blank. The compressed air supply can be interrupted at the end of the stroke. A shoulder 33a of the sleeve S is brought into contact with the plungers 28 and 29 which surround the head 30 and the punch P. When the slider continues to move back beyond the position of FIG. 11, the punch P is released from the hollowed blank. As the sleeve S no longer surrounds the head, the latter is deformed, so as to reduce its internal stresses.
In fig. 12, the slider a. moved back until the moment. where the end of the punch P comes out of the blank. The fixed cam 59 continues to force cam C to the right to hold the stripper sleeve 32 against the head of the blank, so that the punch can be released without the blank coming out of the die. At this time, the sleeve S is clearly separated from the head of the blank.
Immediately after the, position shown in fig. l.?, the punch is completely disengaged from the blank, and a subsequent recoil of the slide is made. move back the arrester sleeve 32 with it for the reason that the roller 58 of the lever L has engaged on the part. on raised 61a of the cam 59, so that the sleeve 32 now becomes fixed relative to the slider instead of being fixed relative to the die.
Then, the expelling finger K3 can release the blank from the die D3 at the appropriate moment. The blank 04 falls on an inclined plane. In a variant, it is collected by a transfer mechanism, depending on the constitution of the machine and the machining operations that the blank must still undergo.
We realize that the. The machine described makes it possible to obtain a metal object with a hollow head with a minimum cold stress on the metal and so that the dies and tools undergo reduced wear. Starting from a stubborn and unworked blank, like the one in fig. 3, and then forming a blank with a conical head so that an interval I remains available during the punching stroke, the cold flow of the metal and the wear of the dies can be reduced to a minimum.
Although the head has been shaped in such a way that it is exactly gripped and formed by the sleeve S, this can be easily released to allow a slight extension of the stubborn blank during the release of the punch <; ori . [, 'review of fi-. 7 and following shows that the punch is centered relative to the bore 33 of the sleeve S and, as this surrounds the head (the finished blank, the end of the punch must necessarily be centered relative to the metal which constitutes the, head of the blank.
This centering reduces any tendency for the ruetal to exert lateral pressure on the punch, which could lead to the latter breaking.
In addition, the sleeve and the punch are. disengaged from each other and retreat., while the blank remains engaged in the die, because of the arrangement -du chopping mechanism.
Figs. 13 to 15 show a variant in which part of the head is formed by the die. In this. indeed, this com takes a chamber 70 which is not deep enough for its edge to completely surround the hollow part of the head. When the sleeve S is moved away, the free end of the stubborn blank can deform to facilitate the release of the punch, as described above.
This variant has the peculiarity that the pressure, due to the punching, and which is exerted on the head, tends to push the metal against the walls of the notch 70 of the die and this results, even when the sleeve S has moved back. , that the die D4 tends to grip the blank strongly and allows the release of the punch. Under these conditions, it would be possible to do away with the pick-up sleeve and its cam mechanism and rely solely on gripping the die to retain the blank in it until it is expelled by the expeller. K3.
We see in fig. 14 and 15 that the chamber 70 can be provided with a conical edge to increase the grip. Easy flow of the metal to pass from the conical head (Fig. 7) to the cylindrical head (Fig. 13) is facilitated if ventilation passages 71 and 72 are provided in the die. These passages are not necessary for the first embodiment described, because the gap between the sleeve S and the die allows the escape of air or any other fluid. On the other hand, when a chamber is provided in the matrix, it may be desirable to resort to these wise steps.
These are so small that only a small part of the blank is deformed upon entering them. It is also possible to give the outlets of the passages 71 and 72 dimensions such that small bosses are formed on the outer face of the head of the blank, which can. This can be advantageous in certain cases since these bosses can increase the gripping effect exerted by a mandrel on the blank during subsequent operations, for example when threading on the tail of the blank.
For the pulling mechanism described above, it is necessary to provide play in the plunger control to prevent damage to the mechanism. For example, if the position of cam C is not. not adjusted exactly or if the head of the blank is too long, it may happen that the sleeve 32 is forced against the blank, which can deform the sleeve and / or the blank.
Figs. 16 to. 18 show certain details of a variant of a pulling mechanism, the slider H1 carrying the sleeve S1 partly carrying out the work of the die during punching. The die D4 comprises an ordinary expeller finger 1C4. The sleeve S1 is held in the slide by means of a sleeve 80 and a key 81. The sleeve SI is housed exactly in the bore 82 of the sleeve 80. The sleeve bears to the rear a rim 84 which retains it in the slide and intervenes to move the sleeve back when said rim comes into contact with the slide. S1 com sleeve carries a bore 85 in which can. neck smooth plungers 86 and 87.
A sealing ring 87a prevents leakage of the compressed air admitted through the inlet A to advance the sleeve S1, as described above. The plungers 86 and 87 cooperate with the punch P1 by acting on the head 88 thereof. A block 89, integral with the slide, is in contact with the plunger 87 and is intended to push the punch back into the blank when the slide advances. The block 89 is bored at 90 to receive another plunger 91 of the pulling mechanism which operates during the retraction of the punch. A cam F is intended to actuate the plunger 91 and intervenes, for tearing out in the manner described below.
The pulling sleeve 94 corresponds to the sleeve 32 of the previous variant, but it operates in a different way. It turns the punch P1, and its rear end carries a flange 95. The sleeve 94 can be moved outwards by two rods which act on the flange 95 and which are biased by springs housed in the plungers 86 and 87.
To maintain, at the same time, the puller sleeve 94 against the head of the blank and to release the punch P1 out of it after the sleeve SI has. been removed, we use two cams 1.00 (fig. 17 and 18) housed in notches 99 of @ plunger'86. The cams are held in place by friction and by balls 101 urged by springs 1.02 which are supported on threaded bolts 103.
The cams act as spacers when the slider acts on them, tending to separate the stripper sleeve 94 and the plunger 86, as follows.
The operation of the archer mechanism is explained with the help of fi --- 19 to 22 for which the. The constitution of the stubborn slide and the pulling mechanism has been reduced to its essential elements. A C1 carne controls this operation. The slider Hl can move horizontally in one direction and in the other in the frame of the machine. A control shaft 110 carries the cam C'1 and a crank button 111 drives a rod 112 which actuates the slide while being articulated to the latter at 113.
The plunger 91 cooperates with an arm I 'which is articulated at 1 \ 30 to the frame and which carries a roller 121. rolling on the contour of the cam CI. To maintain contact between the roller 121 and the cam Cl during the pulling out, recourse is had to a spring 124 acting on the nut screwed onto a rod 123 which is articulated at 122 to the arm P. This spring 124 bears on the bottom of a box 125 fixed to the built.
The shaft 110 rotates in the direction of the arrow, and the cam C1 has a part 130 concentric with the axis of this. tree 110 as well as parts 131 and 132 which are close to this axis. To control the arm P during the retraction of the slide, a roller 127 mounted on this arm is used and which is biased towards a srir-came face 128 of the slide.
When the slide completes its forward travel, block 89 comes into contact. with the plungers 87 and 86 which support the punch P1 to introduce it into the blank. As described, the sleeve 81 has been engaged on the head of the blank to grip the latter during the punching and by bringing in the compressed air admitted at A. At the end of advance ment, the part 130 of the contour of the cam Cl comes opposite the roller 121.
Consequently, if the plunger 91 has a suitable length and if a slight play exists between the members, it is obtained by the rotation of the shaft 11.0 in the direction of the arrow that the plunger 91 maintains the same position with respect to the die. .
In fig. 20, the members are shown during the recoil stroke and just before the moment when the release of the punch from the blank begins. The concentric portion 130 of the cam Cl is about to leave the roller. 121 and the socket 80 moves with the slide and comes into contact. with the edge 8-1 of the sleeve. S1. In this way, the slide releases the sleeve S1 from the blank and. it ceases to be clamped down.
At the same time, the concentric part 1.30 of the hand cam holds the plunger 91 and the punch P1 in the same position with respect to. the. die for retaining the blank therein while the sleeve 81 is released from the head of the blank. During this part of the recoil stroke, the internal face of the sleeve S1 has come into contact with the projecting ends of the spacer cams 100. When the recoil stroke of the slide continues, the blank is maintained in die while releasing the punch from the blank.
On the fia. 21, the recessed portion 131 of the cam C1 comes into contact with the o-alet 121 of the arm I 'and allows. it is up to him to gradually incline to the left. Likewise, the contact of the SI sleeve with the cams 1.00 causes them to act on the plunger 86, which moves under the action of these cams, so that the direction of the pressure exerted by the slide is inverted and this pressure acts on the rim 95 of the stripper sleeve 94.
In other words, the sleeve 91 is biased to the right while the punch P1 and the plungers 86 and 87 are biased to the left by opposing forces. Under these conditions, the device operates during this phase so as to move the punch back in accordance with the profile of the pendant cam C1. that the pulling mechanism holds the blank firmly in the die. Finally, the sleeve S1 comes into contact with the plunger 86 and. with the shoulder 95 of the stripper sleeve 94, so that the punch and sleeve are all apart from the die.
It is seen in fig. 22, when the slider has retreated completely, that the arm F is moved away from the cameo surface 133 of the slider by the action of the roller 127 which rolls on the cameo surface 128 of the latter and that the blank 05 is expelled out of the die by the ex tractor It.1. When the slide moves in the other direction, the arm F stands up and its roller 121 engages on the cam C1 and the arm is again inserted between this cam and the plunger 91.
The plunger 91 or the puller sleeve 91 can be shortened a little to give it sufficient clearance when the opening has an excessive length or the cam C1 can have tolerances such that the same effect is obtained. However, when the stubborn slide moves back, the. The balanced reaction of the cams 100 on the stripper sleeve and on the plunger 86 quickly absorbs any play that may exist, so that the blank is held firmly in the die while the punch P1 is released from the blank .
Figs. 23 to 26 show, in detail, the tool and the die which can be used with one of the variants of the pulling mechanisms described above. In the clamping sleeve 8 "1, a conical cavity 93a is formed which, for the position shown, surrounds the head of the blank 0-1. The members are shown in the position they occupy shortly before the start of punching, and we see a conical interval T (fig. 24) which exists between the head of the blank and the walls of the chamber of the sleeve.
As the punch advances to hollow out the head (fig. 21), the metal first deforms radially and fills the conical gap T until the metal comes into contact with the wall of the sleeve, as laughable in this fig. . 2.1. When the punch Pi continues to advance, there is a flow of the metal of the blank in a direction opposite to that of the movement of the punch.
If the chamber of the sleeve S1 were cylindrical, there would be abrasion and wear of the die and of the punch by the upsetting of the metal in contact with the walls thereof. On the other hand, when the interested part of the wall is. conical, as shown in fig. 23 to 26, at the start of creep, the metal flows to the left of these figures and continuously moves away from the internal face of the sleeve for the reason that the diameter of the outlet, towards which the metal flows, at the - lies gradually.
Fig. 26 shows, on a larger scale, the states of the sleeve and of the blank as they appear in FIG. ? 4 and in fig. ? 5 (when punching is complete), these states being superimposed. It can be seen that any given and arbitrary point of the blank, for example point F, moves, so to speak, axially during creep, as indicated by 1a.
right x-x. Therefore, immediately after the punch has reached the position of FIG. 2-1, each point of the blank, which previously was in contact with the wall of the sleeve, moves axially and therefore moves away from the wall of the chamber of said sleeve. Although the metal has a tendency to deviate from itself from the. wall of the sleeve, the latter does not exert a retaining effect on the metal in the case where a radial and fortuitous creep occurs because the metal then tends to free itself from the sleeve while the creep continues.
The taper is very small, and that shown in the drawing is a little exaggerated, so that the shape of the outline of the socket head of the blank does not deviate greatly from the cylindrical shape. When the SI. moves back and emerges from the blank, it acts as a die and stretches the head so as to give it a cylindrical shape, the diameter of the cylinder corresponding to the minimum diameter of the bore of the sleeve.
By constituting the gripping member of the head of the blank, so that the metal undergoes a creep towards the rear, each point, (the outline of this head tends to move away from itself from the wall of the sleeve and the wear of this member is considerably reduced, which makes it possible to perform the punching with less force, while the punch wears less markedly. All these features are not only advantageous. from the point of view of the service life of the tool, but also from that of the reduction of cold work of the blank.
Although preferred, as shown in Figs. 1 and?, Start with a creep operation rather than with a tying operation, we could start with a blank, formed by a key wire section, the diameter of which would correspond to that of passage 1 of the die D1 , to then deform the end of this blank in order to obtain the head 6 indicated in FIGS. :? and. 3.
The choice of starting with a creep or stubbing operation is highly dependent. the relative dimensions of the head and the tail, the depth that we want to give to the cavity in the head and the nature of the. material constituting the work.
The expression work at. cold must be understood in its usual sense, that is to say as being a work which is done at a teni- perature lower than that at. which results in a change in the structure of the metal, ie recrystallization. Cold work is.
advantageous when temperatures reach 200 to 260. Difficulties resulting from the formation of burrs, coineellient parts in the dies and shrinkage of the metal are avoided at these temperatures, while the problem of the release of the blank is thus solved in a more advantageous manner. .
The machine has been described adopting, by way of example, 1a. making a frill to get a socket head screw, but there. Obviously, the machine in which ori leaves a free and appropriately shaped gap around the head of the blank while punching is being done apply to any other object which needs to be hollowed out, for example a nut or the like.
