Non-magnetic steel.
Known non-magnetic manganese steels have the drawback that they can only be machined with difficulty by tools which remove chips.
The object of the present invention is to obtain non-magnetic steels which are characterized by good mechanical properties and by ease of machining by tools which remove chips. This object is achieved, according to the invention, by steel alloys which contain 8 to 25% manganese, 0 to 1.5% silicon and whose carbon content is at most one twentieth of the manganese content.
The at least predominant austenitic texture of steels can be obtained by an appropriate heat treatment (for example by sudden cooling from around 1000 C or by hot work (casting, rolling, forging)).
The ease of machining can be further improved by adding alloying constituents to the steels mentioned.

giving rise to the formation of carbides (e.g. up to approx. 5% titanium, chromium, molybdenum vanadium), which separate part of the carbon content from the base mass, which exerts an influence on the ease of machining.
The steels according to the invention can for example have the following composition: 0.3 to 0.4% of C, 17 to 205 of Nn and 1% of Cr.
These steels can be easily machined by tools which remove chips; in particular sawing, drilling and threading do not present any difficulties with these steels.
