<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS AT STEELS.
The present invention relates to austenic steels, that is to say steels having a lattice structure mainly of the straight cubic type. bique These steels are frequently used when they must withstand great stresses and have great resistance to corrosion at elevated temperatures. The general practice in the manufacture of refractory alloys is to add to the basic elements, iron, chromium, nickel, manganese and silicon, elements which form carbides, for example tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, titanium or tantalum. In addition, alloying elements, such as cobalt, copper, aluminum, beryllium, edge and the like have been employed or proposed. Vanadium is generally considered to be a carbide former and is often mentioned in the refractory steel literature.
However, we believe that vanadium has seldom or never been used in conjunction with tungsten and molybdenum in commercial steels supplied so far for high temperature work. The presence of the three elements, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, is essential for the present invention.
Among the carbide-forming elements, niobium has assumed considerable importance in practice, and among the alloying elements, cobalt is often employed to achieve high values of creep resistance at elevated temperatures. However, for various reasons, it is desirable to avoid the use of these elements, and one of the objects of the present invention is to provide austenitic steels without said elements, however having sufficient creep resistance. high so that they can be used in the various high temperature applications.
It is understood that it has already been proposed to manufacture austenitic steels without niobium or cobalt, for example consisting of carbon, manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, tungsten, vanadium and iron, with or without boron.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention consists in the manufacture of austenitic steel alloys, the compositions of which are within the limits given below, expressed in% by weight.

The word "impurities" is used in this specification to indicate the various impurities generally found in austenitic steels. This expression includes normal amounts of nitrogen up to 0.06% (unless the amount of nitrogen is specified). However, the nitrogen content could be increased beyond normal amounts, for example up to 0.2% in order to improve the resistance of the alloys to creep.
It can be mentioned here that the normal carbon limits are up to 0.4%, but higher contents, up to 1%, can be used especially for foundry steels. Illustrative examples will be given below.
The limits given below are more restricted preferential limits, with specified elements being able to be substituted for certain limits or for all the limits of the corresponding element or of the corresponding elements in the table given above.

Preferably, the total content of nickel and chromium will not be less than 26%, the total content of silicon, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium will exceed 5%, or according to a preferred embodiment, the total content. made of tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, with or without manganese,
will exceed 5%. The total content of tungsten, vanadium and silicon will preferably exceed 3%.
In alloys suitable for forging work, the total content of the carbide-forming elements, in particular tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, can advantageously lie between the limits of 3 to 8% with a carbon content of 0 , 1 to 0.3%, more restricted limits being 4.6% to 6.6% with a carbon content of 0.1 to 0.2%, and 5 to 6% for carbon contents about 0.15%. A particularly preferred total content of these carbide-forming elements is about 5.4 to 5.8% with a carbon content of about 0.15%.
Oil quenching or air cooling from 1100 ° C. will be suitable for the alloys according to the present invention if economy is desired. More complicated treatments, for example higher dissolution temperature and / or hot working give better properties. Boron additions of up to 0.1% (and more particularly 0.005 to 0.06%) also tend to improve properties.
As an indication, of the order of the breaking force of the alloys according to the present invention (without special treatment or without addition of boron) in the state in which they are found after having been made normal at 1100 ° C. ,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
one can mention the figure of 20 UK tons per square inch at 600 ° C and the figure of 10 UK tons per square inch at 7000 ° C for 300 hours as breaking force. As has been said above, these properties can be improved by the methods already mentioned.
