<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
On a représenté à titre d'exemple au dessin annexé un mode d'exécution du présent procédé;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING SCREWS CARRYING ONE OR TWO BACKING WASHERS
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing screws carrying one or two support washers.
The manufacture of these screws was always done until now by preparing separately, on two different machines, on one side the via, and on the other side the washer o Then the washer was threaded on the rod of the screw, and finally , by an operation
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
any, and in particular by the die-forging of the thread or by its size with the wheel, one ensured the position of the washer so. prevent it from falling off the screw. This method of manufacture was extremely complicated and expensive.
In addition, nuts and screws were manufactured, in which the fall of the washer was prevented by a sort of meshing of this washer with the eorou or with the screw head, but in all cases the the nut or screw had to be manufactured separately and so was the washer. The fabrication required 4 passes: fabrication of the screw, fabrication of the washer, threading the washer on the via, and finally special work to prevent the washer from escaping.
The present invention relates to a process which makes it possible to manufacture, in a very simple and extremely economical manner, screws bearing one or more washers.
The process essentially consists in obtaining around, from a blank which has the diameter of the washers to be manufactured and of the screw head, the washer or washers at the same time as the screw head, this washer or these washers being separated from the head by a small groove, and in the form of one or more flanges which are integral with the shank of the screw; then an axial pressure makes it possible to separate the washer from the shank of the screw so that the internal diameter of the hole of this washer is a little smaller
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
than the diameter of the thread edges of the screw.
With this process, only one pass is kept. The manufacture of the screw, the manufacture of the washer and the inflation of the washer are combined, so to speak, in a single operation $ more exactly, the latter is eliminated $ as well as the special works which were necessary to prevent the washer falling out of the screw is no longer needed.
The present invention therefore provides a very significant simplification. The process which it carries out is notably more economical than the old processes, in particular for the manufacture of small screws. From this point of view, it should be pointed out that the great simplicity of the process leads to a significant saving in manufacturing costs, and what plays an important role is also the fact that, in order to make the washers, one uses only a material which, in the ordinary manufacture of screws, constitutes waste
An embodiment of the present method has been shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing;
, the screw being obtained by turning
Fig. 1 shows the part before the size of the thread, but after a groove has been hollowed out in the head of the screw which isolates a flange, this groove making it possible to separate the flange, that is to say the washer, screw head,
Fig. 2 shows the screw finished with a single washer separated from the head material, this washer, however, cannot leave the shank of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the via. In this figure the washer is shown in section.
In the drawing, 1 designates the shank of the screw, 2 its head, and 'and 3 the support washer.
For example, the screw will be manufactured by starting to shape a rod-shaped part on the turn, so as to constitute the rod 1 of the screw. Then a groove 6 will be hollowed out in the head 2, also on the lathe, before cutting the thread. From the face which is towards the groove, the washer will be slightly notched at the periphery of the rod.
When threading the rod, the die will press against the face ae the flange 7 intended to form the washer, and consequently detach the washer from the material of the rod. During this operation, a ridge is produced at the same time which is suitable for preventing the washer from leaving the rod. In screws which are quite large, it may be advantageous to make a sharp axial notch on the periphery of the rod 1, in the left face of the flange 7, so that the flange will be partially detached from the rod, the end of the separation can be ensured by axial pressure.
Further, it is not necessary for the washer 7 to be completely detached from the rod. Partial separation can be taken into account provided that it is sufficient and final separation will only take place when the screw is used.
In some cases it will be important that the '! Ride
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
7 is made slightly conical on the face opposite to the head 2, so that the thickness of the washer towards the center is a little smaller than at the periphery. Washer 3 then has an elastic action. This shape will be obtained by giving the lathe this conioity to the left of the flange 7, at the same time as the rod is turned.
Finally, it is possible to envisage obtaining two washers on the same rod. This is especially important for the electrical connection screws.
In this case, two grooves 6 having substantially the same depth are hollowed out in turn, so that two flanges 7, are obtained, one next to the other, these flanges being detached from the rod by axial pressure, and the innermost (the one on the right) which may possibly only be partially detached
Instead of obtaining the groove 6 by turning, it can also be obtained by stamping. Similarly, threading can be obtained by stamping or by knurling. In all cases the flange 7 intended to form the washer will be subjected to the desired axial pressure.
