<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans ces dessins Fig.l est une vue en plan et Figo2 une vue en élévation de côté d'une ébauche convenable pouvant servir à former une chape suivant cette invention;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Screed for cables, rods, metal wires, etc. and method of fixing this screed It
This invention relates to yokes for rods, metal wires, strands of metal wires, etc., and in particular metal cables and cords. Its object is a device enabling members such as eyelets, hooks, shackles or other similar connecting members to be attached to any part of a rod or cable.
It relates in particular to the type of yoke used for this purpose which is characterized by a split sleeve embracing the rod or the cable and secured to the latter, by crushing the sleeve, such that the material constituting the latter penetrates. in the peripheral grooves between the to- rons and the wires, or in suitable threads or serrations
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a rod or a metal wire, so as to be intimately linked to them. The invention constitutes an improvement to such screeds and includes certain advantageous modifications in their establishment as well as an improved process for their manufacture.
In general, the invention aims, as has been said, to produce a yoke adaptable to any part of a rod or of a wire cable, which can be securely connected thereto, of which the cost is relatively low and capable of being securely fixed by means of an apparatus which does not require any special skill on the part of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved method for firmly connecting a yoke to a rod or a wire cable of exceptional length, having no free end over which an unsplit sleeve can be threaded. before the yoke is pressed into the peripheral helical grooves of the strand, rope or wire rope, or into the threads or serrations of a rod or wire.
Yet another object of the invention is to adapt this method to the attachment of these yokes to the ends of braids, strands or cables made of metal wires of the ordinary type obtained by twisting wires or strands around a central core. . The threads of which these are composed have a tendency to unwind and separate near their ends. tees and this tendency can be successfully overcome by making use of the new yoke according to this invention and the attachment method described herein.
These characteristics of the invention, and others in-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
core, will be described in detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating by way of example one embodiment of this invention.
In these drawings Fig.1 is a plan view and Figo2 a side elevational view of a suitable blank suitable for forming a yoke according to this invention;
Figs.3 and 4 are similar views, showing the partially shaped blank, before its assembly with the metal cable; Figs 5 and 6 show the blank further shaped and ready to receive the wire rope.
Figs. 7 and 8 show the cable and the yoke assembled, in their final form o Figs. 9 and 10 are similar views of the yoke alone, and Figoll is a sectional view on a larger scale, by line II-II of Fig. 8.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a flat metal blank
10 suitable for being shaped into a yoke having the final shape shown in Figs. 7 to 11 and Figs. 3 to 6 show several phases of the shaping of this screed.
The first operation, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, involves the bending of the blank 10 in order to give it substantially a U-shaped cross section, cc which has the result of bringing the eyelets 11 into alignment, one on each side of the yoke, to receive a bolt (not shown) .. when the device is to be used to connect a metallic cable, indicated. in 13, to another organ.
The following operation consists of a subsequent bending of the longitudinal edges 12 of the blank, so that they form a sleeve of substantially cylindrical section, that; show Figs 5 and 6, and with a diameter
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
preferably sufficiently larger than that of the cable, rod, metal wire or other object such as cable 13, to allow it to be fitted onto one end of cable 13 when this can be done, although this operation can be done, if desired, when the cable is in place.
In either case, when this bending has reached the degree where the points 14 and 15 of the flanges come into contact, as shown in fig. 5, the sleeve is crushed in the peripheral grooves of the cable 13 by applying to the. periphery of the sleeve from the appropriate blows or shocks, until the material from which it is formed fills the hollows of the periphery of the cable, firmly grips the latter and forms a body with it, as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 11.
This crushing or matting is preferably carried out cold, since a temperature such as to promote it should be so high that the cable would be seriously weakened, especially if it is made of molten steel as is often the case. Hot forging is therefore not normally a desirable method for performing the operation in question.
Since this operation must therefore be carried out cold, it is necessary to employ a process which makes it possible to obtain the internal and external deformation of the sleeve of the blank, suitable for making it model and closely match the configuration. cable and which achieves this aim, not only without weakening the blank or the cable, but by tending to improve the quality of the metal of the sleeve of the blank.
It has been found that the best way to achieve this goal is with hammering applied in a rapid series of strokes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lightweight, elastic but at high speed, which molds the sleeve closely to the configuration of the cable, without breaking or weakening the wires of the latter and without deforming the mass other than by compressing it somewhat.
As shown in Fig. 11, after hammering, the inside of the sleeve is virtually screw thread molded to the helical grooves in the cable or to the thread or serrations of a rod or wire. It is obvious that under these conditions a solid connection is obtained between the yoke and the cable. It is in fact that resistance to. breakage or separation is considerably greater than that of the cable itself, provided care has been taken to hammer at the proper point.
It has been found that an ordinary hammer is very suitable for this work, since such a machine tool is easily adjustable and adjustable and an ordinary worker can be quickly trained to use it, in view of the operation required by the operator. present process. However, a rotary hammer is perfectly satisfactory, in cases where the work can be passed through the dies. In general, the crushing or matting operation can be carried out by means of any suitable device capable of carrying out the assembly required for the yoke to substantially increase the strength of the cable or other member considered.
If desired, the operation which follows that of bringing together the edges 12 of the sleeve may consist in reducing the diameter of this sleeve accompanied by an extension, in order to give it the desired dimensions and finish so that the edges are intimately joined along their line of contact. This operation can be ac-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
stretching, completed by / hammering or the like and a support core such as a mandrel, rod or braid can be dispensed with. The sleeve thus produced can be applied to any rod, cable etc. and an intimate connection can be obtained by subsequent hammering or the sleeve can be held in place by welding or by a similar treatment.
