<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

At the point where the advancement or thrust of the tunnel or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the gallery must be started the earth is removed following a profile corresponding approximately to the profile of the future gallery, but larger in the. measure desired so that jig frames 1 (figl) are positioned one behind the other with axial intervals and that advancement brackets 2 can be mounted on these jig frames.
The advancement shields 2 can, when the earth pressures are low, be made up of flat sheet metal parts, bent in the shape of a hoop and the ends of which are made non-sharp, or else, and especially when there are great earth pressures, they can be formed with pieces of tale having in section a salient profile, for example a U-shaped or angular section (fig. 2) Depending on the nature of the soil in each case, the shields are ahead - form a fully closed envelope or an open envelope at the bottom. The shields 2 are guided against each other on their sides because, for example according to FIG. 2, they engage one in the other in the manner of hooks.
Figs. 7 to 10 show, on a larger scale, three different embodiments of a shield construction of this kind,
In the embodiment shown in FIG.
7, one of the 2 x wings of each shield 2 is curved in a V and the other wing, therefore the wing 2y of the shield ep, taken with it carries a strip of sheet metal 2z attached to this wing 2y parallel and to a certain spacing, so the wing tails 2z and 2y form a clamp and the V-shaped end of the other wing 2x engages in the entre- branohes of this clamp ,,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If the wing 2z, as shown in fig. 7, is removably attached to the wing 2y, when this wing or appendix 2z is removed, the wings of the shields can be laid on top of each other by bringing the shields towards each other in a radial direction from the inside to the outside and, after fixing the wing 2z on the wing 2y,
the adjacent wings of the shields engage each other and engage in the manner of hooks, so that the shields cannot become detached from each other in either the radial or circumferential direction .
In the embodiment according to fig. 8, the two wings 2x and 2y of each of the shields are established in a V-shape, so that at each assembly one of the ends of one of the shields can be inserted d up into the corresponding V-shaped gutter of the wing of the neighboring shield, as shown in Fig. 9, bringing the two shields together in a circumferential direction.
Then the two shields are adjusted relative to each other at the angle shown in fig. 9, which corresponds to the angle made by the shields as they advance on the frame-template and after that is fixed on the wing 2y, being again towards the inside of the coating, a bar 2a, which, as in fig. 9 allows you to see it, engages in the groove or gutter of the other 2x V-shaped wing; the shields are thus prevented from rising with respect to each other both in the radial direction and in the ciroonferential direction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the seal of the sheets with respect to each other by means of a hermetic gasket 2 'of rubber or the like placed on the edges of the sheets.
In the case where the shields are only to be prevented from lifting up from each other in the radial direction, but they may have a small mobility with respect to each other in the circumferential direction, the embodiment shown in fig. 10 is enough.
In this construction, the ends of the wings are curved or rolled, as indicated at 2 "and, in addition, one of the wings of each shield is still V-shaped, so that, as in the embodiment according to figs 8 and 9, by reciprocating the shields in circumferential direction and by folding one of the smaller wings 2x from the outside to the inside 1 wing of the neighboring bouolier can be inserted into the other wing 2y with flange in the shape of a wider V, as indicated in dotted lines in fig 10. When the two shields are then folded down relative to each other in the angular position shown in solid lines in fig. 10, both wings 2x,
2y engage in each other like opposing hooks, so that they are thereafter prevented from lifting from each other in a radial direction. Instead of curving or rolling the edges of the shields, the hook shape given to their ends can also be obtained by fitting a longitudinal bar on the ends of the wings.
The lining 3 of the gallery is built inside 1 hollow space surrounded by the shields 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
(figs 1 to 3) and a filling 5 is introduced into the hollow space remaining between the lining 3 and the earth 4, this filling possibly being in concrete, but also, if necessary, in small packed stones, and filling all the space between coating 3 and the earth.
The posterior end of the shields 2 is laid on the moment end of the covering 3 in the filling 5. In the embodiment according to fig, 1, the posterior end of the shields 2 is established at the rear in box shape and the hollow space 2 of the shields 2 is also filled with the mass forming the plugging or filling. Each of the shields 2 has one or more interchangeable appendages 6 and the device for pushing and pressing the shields forward is placed on these appendages 6 and between them and the anterior end of part 2 in box shape.
This device can for example consist of one or more pumps 7, which can be controlled by hand or mechanically, a conduit 8 of which goes to one or more hydraulic winches 9 interposed between the appendages 6 and the end 2 going towards the rear of the shields 2, If the winches 9 are extended by means of the pumps 7, the shield 2 is pushed forward to the right in the direction of fig.
1 against the earth to be removed and the mass in the box-shaped part facing the rear of the shield is pushed backwards into the gap between the earth and the coating 3, so that therefore the space previously occupied by the advancing shield is completely filled, But instead of proceeding in this way, either Bn more
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
operations which have just been deorites, we can, as shown in figs 11 and 12, constitute the front part of the shields 2 in the form of a box, in order to be able to place on the bottom 2k of this box (figs 11 and 12 ), after the earth which has entered this box during the advancement of the shields has been removed, a measuring instrument serving to establish the position of the shields.
In addition, the bottom of the box reduces the friction of the shields.,
If it is found that a slug has deviated from the desired direction, during its advancement, the slugs can be brought back to the desired position during the continuation of the advance by means of the devices shown in figs 13 to 17, by arranging on these bouoliers 2, at the front, a cutting edge or spade 10 ', directed inwards or outwards, namely a spade or other sharp piece directed inwards when the main bouoliers 2 must during their advancement be deflected inwards and a spade directed outwards in cases where the shields 2 must be deflected outwards.
In order to deflect the shields to the sides, it is necessary to fit on these shields, in an inter-changeable fashion, a 10 "oblique rib head piece, as shown in figs. 16 and 17.
In the exemplary embodiment following fig 1, there are placed under the advancement shields 2 auxiliary shields 10, which are mounted on Mies frame size 1 and which carry on their side the advancement shields 2. These shields auxiliaries 10 placed under the actual advancement shields must be used in
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the case where the earth, through which the gallery must be passed, is very loose, for example because it consists of earth or rolled pebbles.
The auxiliary shields 10 do not guide themselves to the side, like the main shields 2, but they only limit each other, so that they are guided only, during advancement, by the main shields 2, but they only limit each other, so that they are guided only, when advancing, by the main shields 2. These auxiliary shields 10 are first pushed forward into the earth; then, as shown in fig. 1, the earth e which is directly below them is removed until the front end of the auxiliary shields 10 can be supported by one or more props II and then the main shields 2 are pushed in, the auxiliary shields 10 then serving guides to the main shields 2.
By means of these auxiliary shields it is also possible to effect a deviation of the main shields from their direction by providing the auxiliary shields with a bohe or other piece or sharp part directed inward or outward. In the case where, as shown in figs 1 and 13, the auxiliary shields 10 have a cutting edge directed inwards, the auxiliary shields already stretch, as they advance to the anterior end of the main shields 2 , so before their meeting with the main shields, to deflect inwards.
As shown in fig. 13, to avoid this deviation until the union of the auxiliary shields with the main shields, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
head piece 12 having a cutting edge opposite to that of the auxiliary shield, therefore facing outward, is mounted freely lifting the auxiliary shield
10 and this part forming an appendage pushes the auxiliary shields 10 against the main shields 2 as they advance.
As soon as the auxiliary shields have reached the anterior end of the main shields
2, the part 12 is automatically detached from the auxiliary shields lo because it is deflected by its cutting edge in the earth towards the outside (fig. 13) and then, after joining the auxiliary shields and the main shields together. with the others, the cutting edge directed towards the inside of the auxiliary shields lo comes into action, by deflecting these auxiliary shields inward and with them the main shields during the new advancement.
Apart from cases in which the shields are inadvertently deflected from the desired direction, a deflection of the shields towards the exterior comes into consideration when the profile of the shields has to be modified, either the gallery should receive another section, or that it is necessary to make a curve in this gallery.
In fact, while the use of jigs having an outer shape of an arc of a circle is the most rational in a straight gallery, because the cylindrical shape of the advancement shields is the one which saves the most space. and which is the most resistant to pressure, when pushing a gallery in curves the use of polygonal template frames is advantageous, because, if one uses template frames having an arched shape on the outside circle, each advancement shield should have a bend shape
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
different from the others, while by using externally polygonal template frames, consequently shields resting on one side of the polygon, as shown in fig.
2, these shields can have the same bending shape, so that in this case it is only necessary to use in the curves as many different shield shapes as the template has sides. In this case, the shields 2 deflected outwards, as shown in FIG. 18, are left in the earth and, inside these shields, as before, shields 2b of other profile are mounted and pushed forward on the template frames 1 and the skin 3.
If their profile has to be changed again, they are deflected on their side by 10 'wedge-shaped auxiliary shields and, after removal of the auxiliary shields, they are left in the earth, then below the deflected shields and under their protection shields of other profile are mounted as before and so on.
As shown in fig. 1, the front shields 13 are mounted behind the front jig frame; l, these front shields ensuring the face of the earth in each case. We use most rationally, as a front shield, pieces of tale with angular section which are arranged by engaging one on the other like scales.
The shields 13 can furthermore, as shown in particular in FIG. 5, be provided with an appendage 13 'formed by a U-shaped iron, by which these bolsters engage in the manner of hooks in an appen- aioe 13 "of the immediately superior front shield, so that the shields abreast hang from each other
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
very much like hooks and that the shield pushed at one point into the earth is prevented from sliding into the earth by the shields above.
The shields 13 are supported by means of stanchions 14 (see in particular fig. 3) against one or more template frames 1 and they can also be supported by means of props 14 'against a cross member 15 fixed so removable to the covering 3, as shown in particular in figs 3 and 2. Given now that during the time during which the covering 3 is constructed, the template frames 1 resting on their side against the edge or end surface of the covering lose their support and must also be pitted forward from time to time, there are provided outside the props 14, or instead of these, as shown in fig 4, also props 16 which s' apply against clamping pieces or clamps 17 fixed to the 1 "bouoliers.
These clamps can, as shown in fig. 6, for example be established in the form of claws and be clamped on the curved or rolled part of the advancement shields 2.
The earth in each case in front of the front shields 13 is gradually withdrawn from top to bottom and the shields 13 are also gradually pushed forward from top to bottom one after the other and they are again propped up. as shown. When the earth is very loose, such as for example. flowing sand or layers of gravel, it is recommended to fix or previously hold in the form of a thin wall the earth behind the boulders.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
cliers front and also the earth behind the shields advancement 2 and 10.
A consolidation of this kind of the earth can be done by means of tubes 18 pushed forward through the front shields into the earth in front of them (fig. 1), a binder with physical or chemical emotion being pushed back. or injected into the earth in an appropriate amount by these tubes 18, so that this earth binds to the front end of the tubes 18 in the form of a wall 19. If one pushes forward out of the tubes 18 also tubes 18 'inclined towards the outside and if one also pushes or injects by these tubes 18' of the binder in the earth, this one consolidates as shown in fig, 1 in the form of a closed cylindrical envelope 19 'in front by a 19 "background.
For the establishment of such a solidified hollow body in front of the shields, it remains recom- mendable to use an instant binding product, for example materials containing silicone acid and soluble salts or acids mixed together. in active combination, so that the progress work can continue uninterrupted and that the binder does not flow into the soil. If the earth is subjected to a very strong pressure from the earth or water, it is also easy to control the consolidation of the earth remaining inside the hollow body 19, 19 ', 19 "formed altogether. time. But, for the consolidation of this earth, one can use a slower and less expensive binder, for example cement milk.
This is injected into the mass of earth e through one or more upper pipes 18a (fig. 1) and the water being possible
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
tualement in the mass of earth e is evacuated by one or more lower tubes 18b. When the cement milk comes out through the tubes 18, this operation is completed and, after the core has also been caught, this core can be raised and the forehead shields 13 pushed up and down. gradually as before.
In cases where it is necessary to cross a ground which is not as loose as loose sand, but for example quicksand or pure gravelly layers, which are partly loose when under a strong pressure of earth, it suffices, as shown in figo 4, to consolidate at any time by physical or chemical agents a part of the earth and located at a certain distance behind the front of size 13 of the moment, which carries the shield (s) advancement. In this case, the consolidated upper part in the form of a 19x segment of the earth provides a sufficiently strong support for the shields, advancement 2 to prevent lowering of the upper shields under the pressure of the earth during the withdrawal of the upper part. of the waist front.
To lower the underground water above the ground of the tunnel or point under construction of the gallery, we also push, as shown in fig 4, in the mass of earth to be removed, depending on the nature of this mass, i.e. a tube is a small gallery r, which is always pushed several meters forward, that is to say that we use a piece of pipe in the case of loose earth and that we push forward a small gallery in the case of dry land, Since this little gale-
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
rie is within the framework of the masses of earth to be removed, the advancement of this small gallery already constitutes part of the advancement of the tunnel or main gallery,
The forward thrust of the pipe can be done according to the sources of motive force available in each case,

mechanically hydrulically, or even pneumaticallyemoot.
When you push a tube forward, the soil in that tube is removed, and out of that tube you sink a few filter wells about two or three, up to lm, to lm, 2 deep, into the tube. each case depending on the groundwater conditions. If the soil is loose, the wells should be provided with a permeable lining, which may for example consist of perforated cast iron tubular pieces g1 or the like. By suction of the underground water from the wells g and from the tube or from the small gallery, this underground water is pumped and lowered to the ground level of the coating to be applied. The water can be drained through the nearest opening, for example outlet wells leading to the surface or the like.
In soil containing water, a special kind of waterproof packing has been provided as a coating, which is shown in fig. 18. This coating consists of a casing a which is simply stable in itself and having a low load-bearing capacity, with a waterproof insulating layer c affixed to the inside of this casing and a load-resistant casing mounted in the casing. cladding in profiled stone b of suitable dimensions for the use.
The envelope a is surrounded by a protective envelope d, f made of reinforced concrete, resistant to load and breakage, which

serving essentially only as a support for the insulating layer, against deterioration or breakage produced by external influences. The construction of this ve- garment can be done by first constructing the armature d of the casing of reinforced concrete and, inside this, the casing a, after which the casing is poured. concrete behind the envelope a, the insulating layer c is placed on the inside of the envelope a and the coating b is placed in the envelope a.
In order to save special lifting devices for the winches 9 serving to push forward the advancing shields 2, which would further reduce the working space inside the jig frames, according to the invention the jig frames carrying the advancement shields are at the same time made usable as supports for lifting devices for the advancement winches.
Figs. 19 to 23 show this construction of such hoists. The frame 30 of a lifting apparatus moves by means of wheels 31 on the flanges of the jig frames 1. The frame 30 can be extended lengthwise, because the two struts of the jig. chassis are divided transversely and the two parts ooulent longitudinally -l'one against the other. With a view to the sliding of one of the parts of the frame, it is provided with racks 32, with which toothed wheels 34 are engaged by means of a crank 33.
In this way, the longitudinal spacing of the wheels 31 can be adjusted so that the wheels roll exactly on the webs of the profiled irons.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
forming the frame-jigs 1. A support 36 of the pressure cylinder 9, serving for the advancement of the shield 2, is movable transversely to the plane of the frame 30 by means of the winch 35. The advancement instrument 9 can be raised to the height of the frame. using the winch 35 until it is in front of the appendages 6 arranged on the shields 2.
After the instrument 9 has pushed forward one of the shields 2 of a suitable length, the frame 30 is pushed over the jig 1, transversely to itself, and therefore placed phs higher or lower, to the extent required so that the instrument 9 is in front of the appendix 6 of the following bou- alier 2. For this purpose, the frame 30 is fixed, by means of a cable 37, to a prop 38 (figs 19 and 22).
The prop 38 is also constructed in such a way that it can be extended and, for its lengthening and shortening, for example, analogous to what is done in the frame 30 of the lifting apparatus, d 'a toothed wheel 40 which can be turned by means of a handle 39 and which engages with a toothing 41 of one of the elements of the prop. Using this device, the stanchion 38 can be stretched between two cross members 42 fixed to the jigs 1. The stanchion 38 carries a number of tmils 43 corresponding to the number of lifting devices present at any time. on a frame-template or a pair of frame-templates, and from each of these winches, the cable 37 is guided on pulleys 44 arranged on the prop 38 to a lifting device 30.
The pulleys 44 can for example be mounted on arms 45 articulated on the strut 38 and the other end of which rests against the side of one of the advancement shields 2, as
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
shown in figure 19.
Between the arms 45 of the prop, an extendable frame
46 is mounted so as to be able to oscillate in the direction of the periphery of the frame-jigs 1 (figs 19 and
23) and the chassis 46 carries at the same time an advancing instrument 9, which serves to ensure that the shields 2, located above the arms 45, are pushed forward successively, by the lifting devices 30 can only be lifted up against the arms 45. But a lifting device 46 of this kind is also suitable as a support for the pushing instruments in front of the shields when pushing through tunnels of very small diameters, for example. example of channels and, in this case, the lifting devices 30 are superfluous.
For the advancement of the heavy bars 15, serving to support the front shields 13, the auxiliary device shown in FIGS. 24 and 25 has been provided. This device consists of a cross member 50, fixed to the bars 15 at the top. arm means 49, with a rolling winch 51 movable longitudinally on this cross member 50.
In the event that two or more rows of support bars 15 are to be used side by side, the arms 49 of the bars 15 are arranged with respect to each other and are in particular placed at the same height on the support bars 15 and turned towards each other so that the cross members 50 can be passed directly, from the arms 49 of one of the rows of support bars onto the arms 49 of the other row of support bars .. The use of the device can in this case be done so that alternatively the support bars 15 of one of the
