" Bougies d'allumage. "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Spark plugs."
The present invention relates to spark plugs for internal combustion engines and their manufacturing process.
A particularly important object of the invention consists in obtaining a perfect insulation in the body of the spark plug as well as a perfect etanoheity with the use of very resistant materials and of practically unlimited duration, avoiding in particular the losses. defects resulting from breakage and inherent cracks in the candles in which porcelain is involved.
Another object of the invention is to construct a spark plug, the shape of which in the vicinity of the electrodes is designed with a view to reducing clogging during operation and to avoid the drawbacks which arise from carbon deposits.
The candle according to the invention is characterized in particular in that the shape of the various constituent parts is designed so as to greatly facilitate the manufacture of the candle.
Candles are currently manufactured on a very large scale
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and any simplification in manufacture results in significant economic advantages.
In the accompanying drawing, 'given by way of non-limiting example, some embodiments of the invention have been shown; in particular :
Fig.l shows the elevational view of a candle according to the invention.
Fig. 2 represents the same in section along its axis, and
Fig. 3 shows a modified form in a view similar to Fig.l.
In what follows, the candle will be described by following the phases of its manufacture, the simplicity of which is one of the great advantages of the invention.
'The candle consists of a central rod or electrode 1 (fig. 2), which over a large part of its length has a strictly cylindrical shape, terminates in a bursting point 2 at the lower end, and is threaded to the next upper part 3. Around the rod 1 is wound over almost its entire length a thin sheet of mica, preferably in one piece so as to constitute an insulating sleeve of sufficient thickness 4. While this sleeve starts from the lower end of the rod leaving only the tip 2 uncovered, it leaves free at the other end a sufficient length of the thread 3.
On the lower half-height of the sleeve 4 is threaded the main body, the lower part of which is in the form of a nut 5 which is screwed onto the cylinder head of the engine. This part is manufactured so as to fit exactly to the diameter constituted by the sleeve 4 and its tubular upper part 6 is tightly clamped around the mica by any known method. This tightening somewhat reduces the diameter of part 6 and of the corresponding zone of the sleeve 4 as can be seen in the figure, and simultaneously ensures the solid and practically
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
indestructible parts at the same time as an absolute seal.
One or more bursting points are attached to the underside of the nut 5? 7 according to any known arrangement, the electrode 1 being connected to the positive pole by the terminal 8 screwed on its threaded part 3 while the nut 5 is connected to the. mass ; the sparks will therefore burst between tip 2 and tip (s) '1.
Mica washers 9 can be tightened around the sleeve 4, between the terminal 8 and the tubular part 6 to give a plain cylindrical outer shape.
The difference between Figs. 1 and 3 lies in the arrangement of the bursting tips. In fig. 1 the lower part of the nut 5 is extended into the combustion chamber by a bowl 5 'in which the spike or spikes 7 are fixed, while in the embodiment of fig. 3 the spikes d They are also openly projected into the said chamber. Various other corresponding arrangements can be chosen depending on the type of engine considered.
The use of mica as a means of insulation in spark plugs has already been proposed and the use of this material itself is not claimed.
