@
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

combustible plus fin soit déposé à la périphérie, et le combustible plus gros au centre, un dispositif pour n'ad- mettre le fluide gazeux que suivant une zone annulaire du fond de la couche de combustible, d'où une partie suf- fisante de ce fluide passe d'elle-mème, à travers les particules plus grosses du combustible, vers le centre, et v assure la vitesse de combustion voulue ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements to gazogens".
The present invention relates to gasifiers in which the fuel is distributed over the upper part of the fuel layer so as to deposit the finest fuel at the periphery, and the largest in the center. these gasifiers are equipped with a grid, an air and steam distribution device and a device for the continuous removal of ash.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the present invention is a device for the distribution of air and value and a device for continuous ash removal which is better suited to the above-mentioned fuel distribution method than those which have been employed heretofore. 'now.
The position and shape of the combustion zone at each point in the fuel layer of a gasifier depends on the rate of combustion. the ash removal rate at that point. If the rate of combustion is uniform, and if the ash is removed uniformly, as it is formed, in all parts of the fuel bed, the fuel zone will be stationary. If, in a part of the fire, combustion occurs with a speed greater than that of the removal of the corresponding ash, the combustion zone rises at this point and tends to form blast holes.
A gasifier of the type mentioned above can gasify an inferior fuel, containing a large percentage of menu, thanks to the distribution of the menu to the. periphery of the fuel layer and the fat in the center, which is due to the inherent tendency of combustion to occur with high velocity at the. periphery or on the sides, and with low speed in the center. However, excessive combustion activity is avoided by this distribution.
According to the present invention is combined, in a cylindrical gasifier provided with a device by which the fuel is distributed, on the upper part of the fuel layer, so that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
finer fuel is deposited at the periphery, and the larger fuel in the center, a device for admitting the gaseous fluid only along an annular zone of the bottom of the fuel layer, from where a sufficient part of this fluid passes by itself, through the larger particles of the fuel, towards the center, and v ensures the desired combustion speed;
an ash exhaust device at the periphery of the bottom of the fuel layer, and, in the central part of the fuel layer, where air is not directly admitted, an ash removal device.
The annular region of the bottom of the fuel layer extends inward from points relatively close to the. periphery. In the center, a significant part of the fuel layer does not receive air directly but, thanks to the porosity of the fuel located in the center, a sufficient quantity of air passes through the center of the fuel layer and ensures there the desired combustion speed, and the device for extracting the ash from the central zone, where air is not directly admitted, contributes to the lowering of the combustion zone in the center, by avoiding blow holes. This device also produces a greater depth of combustion and provides more efficient fuel gasification than usual.
The central area of the grate is flattened to produce a better blast distribution by opposing the formation of a porous path at the junction between the ash line and the grate, which path, if formed, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
would allow air to pass through the center of the fire in almost as large a quantity as if air were blown into the center of the grate. The flattened part of the grate is fitted with an ash extraction device.
In the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the gasifier according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar partial view, showing a variant.
The casing 1 of the gasifier shown in FIG. 1 is provided with a refractory lining 2. A circular fuel loading mechanism has been chosen from among the other mechanisms capable of effecting the above-described distribution of the finer particles at the periphery of the fuel layer in a. , and larger particles in the center, in b. The key feed mechanism is shown at 3 and has a feed hopper 4 rotating along the periphery of the top of the gasifier and supplying fuel to the entire periphery of the fuel layer. The upper part of the fuel layer is indicated in c. The lower part of the gasifier is fitted with a water jacket 5. The entire grid, of the mechanical type, is indicated at 6.
As it is reproached. the grid is formed by a cylinder 7 surmounted by a truncated stepped cone provided with openings 8,
A flattened top c, equipped with curved cutting blades 10, is disposed above the truncated cone. The flattened top is not perforated, or, in other words, does not have openings. This rotating grid is
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
born using a worm gear mechanism and toothed wheel 11.
It comprises an ashtray 12 and a ploughshare 13. The ring 14 closes the grid.
Air, vapor or a mixture of air and value is admitted b. the interior of the grid through a pipe 15 and traps through the openings 3 in the fuel layer.
It is delivered directly to an annular zone of the fuel layer, which zone extends inwardly from the periphery and includes the finer particles.
The fluid forming the gas (air, vapor or a mixture of air and vapor) does not pass through the top of the grid, but, thanks to it. -porosity Greater of the central part of the fuel layer, a sufficient quantity of air passes through it, as indicated by arrows: in this way, the height of the combustion zone, indicated in X, and that of the reduction zone, indicated at Y, is maintained at the center of the fuel layer, relatively close to the. grid, or at a fairly low level. The knives 10 also assist in this by increasing the rate of ash removal from the center of the fire and by equalizing the rates of burning and ash removal therein.
The result of the joint action of feeding the center with coarse fuel, and the periphery with fine fuel; the circular admission of the fluid forming the gas; flattened, unperforated top of the grid; and its device for extracting the ash from the center of the fire, is shown in fig. 1 -oar the position and shape of the combustion and reduction zones, These zones extend uniformly through the entire layer of compost and the central part of the combustion zone
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
is very close to the grate, forming an effective depth of the fuel layer and avoiding the formation of blow holes.
The activity of the annular outer part of the fuel layer is thus ensured, and the amount of unburnt fuel escaping from this part is reduced accordingly.
At the periphery of the bottom of the fuel layer, the ash passes through the space 17 provided between the part 7 of the grate and the ring 14.
The construction and operation of the variate shown in, fig. 2 are the rings as those described above, except that the. grid 18 has an evliner shape that, and is surmounted by a low cone constituting the unperforated top and carrying the current blades. The openings are shown in 16.
